    Observation of Toroidal Flow on LHD

    In order to investigate the formation of toroidal flow in helical systems, both NBI driven flow and spontaneous toroidal flow were observed in Large Helical Device (LHD). The toroidal flow driven by NBI is dominant in plasma core while its contribution is small near plasma edge. The spontaneous toroidal flow changes its direction from co to counter when the radial electric field is changed from negative to positive at plasma edge. The direction of the spontaneous toroidal flow due to the radial electric field near plasma edge is observed to be opposite to that in plasma core where the helical ripple is small

    Cloning of cDNA and genomic DNA for human cytochrome P-45011β

    AbstractA full-length cDNA clone encoding steroid 11β-hydroxylase (P-45011β) has been isolated from a cDNA library derived from human adrenal tumor. The insert of the clone contains an open reading frame encoding a protein of 503 amino acid residues together with a 4 bp 5'-untranslated region and a 576 bp 3'-untranslated region to which a poly(A) tract is attached. The promoter region of the P-45011β gene has also been isolated from a genomic library derived from human pre-B cells. It contains a TATA box, a putative cAMP-responsive element, several repeated sequences and two sequence elements similar to the consensus sequence for binding of AP-1. A transient expression assay in Y-1 adrenal tumor cells demonstrates that the promoter activity is remarkably enhanced by treatment of the cells with cAMP. In addition, analysis using deletion mutants containing various lengths of the 5'-flanking region of the gene suggests that several cis-acting elements participate in transcriptional regulation of human P-45011β gene

    Electron Tunneling through Pseudomonas aeruginosa Azurins on SAM Gold Electrodes

    Robust voltammetric responses were obtained for wild-type and Y72F/H83Q/Q107H/Y108F azurins adsorbed on CH_3(CH_2)_nSH:HO(CH_2)_mSH (n=m=4,6,8,11; n=13,15 m=11) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) gold electrodes in acidic solution (pH 4.6) at high ionic strengths. Electron-transfer (ET) rates do not vary substantially with ionic strength, suggesting that the SAM methyl headgroup binds to azurin by hydrophobic interactions. The voltammetric responses for both proteins at higher pH values (>4.6 to 11) also were strong. A binding model in which the SAM hydroxyl headgroup interacts with the Asn47 carboxamide accounts for the relatively strong coupling to the copper center that can be inferred from the ET rates. Of particular interest is the finding that rate constants for electron tunneling through n = 8, 13 SAMs are higher at pH 11 than those at pH 4.6, possibly owing to enhanced coupling of the SAM to Asn 47 caused by deprotonation of nearby surface residues

    The physical data of the Large Helical Device (LHD) project have been serviced by the Analyzed Data Server system, and approximately 600 kinds of physical data are served. In order to execute simulation programs for the LHD experiment, one must gather sets of physical data. Because the Automatic Analyzed Server (AutoAna) calculates the physical data automatically, it eases the scientist’s task of collecting these physical data. The AutoAna has provided better computing environments for the scientists. Thus, the scientists, having recognized its benefits, make various requests as issues arise. In this paper, the authors introduce the current status of the AutoAna system

    Definition of the profile gain factor and its application for internal transport barrier analysis in torus plasmas

    In this paper, a new criterion for the internal transport barrier (ITB) formation is proposed by defining a unique scalar parameter, the profile gain factor. The profile gain factor shows degree of the confinement improvement with respect to an arbitrary reference temperature profile in the L-mode. As the reference L-mode profile for the large helical device (LHD), the edge ion temperature profile data is extrapolated to the core by the L-mode profile function, which is characterized by the thermal diffusion coefficient being proportional to the local ion temperature. The profile gain factor is defined as the ratio of the ion stored energy experimentally measured to that evaluated from the reference L-mode profile. The proposed method is applied to the LHD experimental data, and its capability for quantification of the ITB strength is demonstrated

    The Effect of Non-Axisymmetry of Magnetic Configurations on Radial Electric Field Transition Properties in the LHD

    Transition property of the radial electric field (Er) in LHD have been theoretically investigated and also applied to explain experimental results. Especially, effects of the helicity of the magnetic configuration on the condition to realize the electron root are examined. Larger helicity makes the threshold collisionality higher. This is attributed to the nonlinear dependence of Γe(Er) in a low collisional regime. This interesting feature predicts that the threshold temperature becomes higher for a case of smaller helicity. The variation of the threshold density anticipated from the analysis for cases with different magnetic axis position is qualitatively verified in the density scan experiment

    Rice Annotation Database (RAD): a contig-oriented database for map-based rice genomics

    A contig-oriented database for annotation of the rice genome has been constructed to facilitate map-based rice genomics. The Rice Annotation Database has the following functional features: (i) extensive effort of manual annotations of P1-derived artificial chromosome/bacterial artificial chromosome clones can be merged at chromosome and contig-level; (ii) concise visualization of the annotation information such as the predicted genes, results of various prediction programs (RiceHMM, Genscan, Genscan+, Fgenesh, GeneMark, etc.), homology to expressed sequence tag, full-length cDNA and protein; (iii) user-friendly clone / gene query system; (iv) download functions for nucleotide, amino acid and coding sequences; (v) analysis of various features of the genome (GC-content, average value, etc.); and (vi) genome-wide homology search (BLAST) of contig- and chromosome-level genome sequence to allow comparative analysis with the genome sequence of other organisms. As of October 2004, the database contains a total of 215 Mb sequence with relevant annotation results including 30 000 manually curated genes. The database can provide the latest information on manual annotation as well as a comprehensive structural analysis of various features of the rice genome.     Response of plasma toroidal flow to the transition between nested and stochastic magnetic field in LHD

    Response of the plasma toroidal flow to the forward and backward transition between the nested and the stochastic magnetic field is studied using the charge exchange spectroscopy in the large helical device (LHD). Abrupt damping of toroidal flow associated with a transition from nested magnetic flux surface to a stochastic magnetic field is observed when the magnetic shear at the rational surface decreases to 0.5 after the exchange of the neutral beam injection (NBI) direction from co- to counter-direction in LHD. The stochastization of magnetic field occurs only in a narrow range of magnetic shear near 0.5 and spontaneousback-transition from stochastic to nested magnetic field (healing) is observed in the steady-state phase of magnetic shear. When the NBI direction is changed from counter- to co-direction, the healing of magnetic field occurs associated with the increase of magnetic shear

    Isotope Effect on Energy Confinement Time and Thermal Transport in Neutral-Beam-Heated Stallarator-Heliotron

    The isotope effect on energy confinement time and thermal transport has been investigated for plasmas confined by a stellarator-heliotron magnetic field. This is the first detailed assessment of an isotope effect in a stellarator heliotron. Hydrogen and deuterium plasmas heated by neutral beam injection on the Large Helical Device have exhibited no significant dependence on the isotope mass in thermal energy confinement time, which is not consistent with the simple gyro-Bohm model. A comparison of thermal diffusivity for dimensionally similar hydrogen and deuterium plasmas in terms of the gyroradius, collisionality, and thermal pressure has clearly shown robust confinement improvement in deuterium to compensate for the unfavorable mass dependence predicted by the gyro-Bohm model
