Interpreting Deep Learning-Based Networking Systems
While many deep learning (DL)-based networking systems have demonstrated
superior performance, the underlying Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) remain
blackboxes and stay uninterpretable for network operators. The lack of
interpretability makes DL-based networking systems prohibitive to deploy in
practice. In this paper, we propose Metis, a framework that provides
interpretability for two general categories of networking problems spanning
local and global control. Accordingly, Metis introduces two different
interpretation methods based on decision tree and hypergraph, where it converts
DNN policies to interpretable rule-based controllers and highlight critical
components based on analysis over hypergraph. We evaluate Metis over several
state-of-the-art DL-based networking systems and show that Metis provides
human-readable interpretations while preserving nearly no degradation in
performance. We further present four concrete use cases of Metis, showcasing
how Metis helps network operators to design, debug, deploy, and ad-hoc adjust
DL-based networking systems.Comment: To appear at ACM SIGCOMM 202
Changes in Glial Cell Line-derived Neurotrophic Factor Expression in the Rostral and Caudal Stumps of the Transected Adult Rat Spinal Cord
Limited information is available regarding the role of endogenous Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in the spinal cord following transection injury. The present study investigated the possible role of GDNF in injured spinal cords following transection injury (T9–T10) in adult rats. The locomotor function recovery of animals by the BBB (Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan) scale score showed that hindlimb support and stepping function increased gradually from 7 days post operation (dpo) to 21 dpo. However, the locomotion function in the hindlimbs decreased effectively in GDNF-antibody treated rats. GDNF immunoreactivty in neurons in the ventral horn of the rostral stump was stained strongly at 3 and 7 dpo, and in the caudal stump at 14 dpo, while immunostaining in astrocytes was also seen at all time-points after transection injury. Western blot showed that the level of GDNF protein underwent a rapid decrease at 7 dpo in both stumps, and was followed by a partial recovery at a later time-point, when compared with the sham-operated group. GDNF mRNA-positive signals were detected in neurons of the ventral horn, especially in lamina IX. No regenerative fibers from corticospinal tract can be seen in the caudal segment near the injury site using BDA tracing technique. No somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) could be recorded throughout the experimental period as well. These findings suggested that intrinsic GDNF in the spinal cord could play an essential role in neuroplasticity. The mechanism may be that GDNF is involved in the regulation of local circuitry in transected spinal cords of adult rats
Spindle Assembly Checkpoint Regulates Mitotic Cell Cycle Progression during Preimplantation Embryo Development
Errors in chromosome segregation or distribution may result in aneuploid embryo formation, which causes implantation failure, spontaneous abortion, genetic diseases, or embryo death. Embryonic aneuploidy occurs when chromosome aberrations are present in gametes or early embryos. To date, it is still unclear whether the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) is required for the regulation of mitotic cell cycle progression to ensure mitotic fidelity during preimplantation development. In this study, using overexpression and RNA interference (RNAi) approaches, we analyzed the role of SAC components (Bub3, BubR1 and Mad2) in mouse preimplantation embryos. Our data showed that overexpressed SAC components inhibited metaphase-anaphase transition by preventing sister chromatid segregation. Deletion of SAC components by RNAi accelerated the metaphase-anaphase transition during the first cleavage and caused micronuclei formation, chromosome misalignment and aneuploidy, which caused decreased implantation and delayed development. Furthermore, in the presence of the spindle-depolymerizing drug nocodazole, SAC depleted embryos failed to arrest at metaphase. Our results suggest that SAC is essential for the regulation of mitotic cell cycle progression in cleavage stage mouse embryos
Steroids in the Treatment of IgA Nephropathy to the Improvement of Renal Survival: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Studies have shown that steroids can improve kidney survival and decrease the risk of proteinuria in patients with Immunoglobulin A nephropathy, but the overall benefit of steroids in the treatment of Immunoglobulin A nephropathy remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefits and risks of steroids for renal survival in adults with Immunoglobulin A nephropathy. We searched the Cochrane Renal Group Specialized Register, Cochrane Controlled Trial Registry, MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. All eligible studies were measuring at least one of the following outcomes: end-stage renal failure, doubling of serum creatinine and urinary protein excretion. Fifteen relevant trials (n = 1542) that met our inclusion criteria were identified. In a pooled analysis, steroid therapy was associated with statistically significant reduction of the risk in end-stage renal failure (RR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.27 to 0.79), doubling of serum creatinine (RR = 0.34, 95%CI = 0.15 to 0.77) and reduced urinary protein excretion (MD = −0.47g/day, 95%CI = −0.64 to −0.31).We identified that steroid therapy was associated with a decrease of proteinuria and with a statistically significant reduction of the risk in end-stage renal failure. Moreover, subgroup analysis also suggested that long-term steroid therapy had a higher efficiency than standard and short term therapy
Study the Effect of Operating Temperature on Performance in Dry Scroll Vacuum Pump
The dry scroll vacuum pump is a kind of variable capacity dry vacuum pump that is applied in chemical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and scientific instruments. Analyzing the thermodynamic characteristics of the scroll vacuum pump and studying the impact of operating temperature on its consistent performance are necessary for the design and application of the cooling system of the scroll vacuum pump. Based on the dynamics mesh method, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation model of a multi-stage dry scroll vacuum pump is established in this study. Under the suction pressure of 1000 Pa, the simulation calculation is carried out at different operating temperatures of fixed scrolls (25 °C, 45 °C, and 65 °C). The results show that the pumping speed, the gas compression power, and the energy efficiency ratio are significantly affected by different temperatures. The operating temperature of the pump has been reduced from 65 °C to 25 °C, the pumping speed is increased by approximately 5.97%, the gas compression power is increased by approximately 4.32%, and the energy efficiency ratio is increased by approximately 1.745%. This research provides a transient simulation method using dynamic mesh technology for the study of the dry scroll vacuum pump, and the results can provide a theoretical basis for the design and application of the cooling system of the dry scroll vacuum pump
