Catalytic Ozonation of Recalcitrant Organic Chemicals in Water Using Vanadium Oxides Loaded ZSM-5 Zeolites
The discharge of wastewater having recalcitrant chemical compositions can have significant and adverse environmental effects. The present study investigates the application of a catalytic ozonation treatment for the removal of recalcitrant organic chemicals (ROCs) from the water. Novel catalytic materials using vanadium (V) oxides deposited onto the surface of NaZSM-5 zeolites (V/ZSM) were found to be highly efficient for this purpose. The highly-dispersed V oxides (V4+ and V5+) and Si-OH-Al framework structures were determined to promote the surface reaction and generation of hydroxyl radicals. The constructed V1/ZSM450 (0.7 wt% of V loading and 450°C of calcination) exhibited the highest activity among the developed catalyst compositions. The V1/ZSM450-COP increased the mineralization rate of nitrobenzene and benzoic acid by 50 and 41% in comparison to single ozonation. This study demonstrates the enhanced potential of V/ZSM catalysts used with catalytic ozonation process (COP) for the treatment of chemical wastewaters
Volatile metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses provide insights into the mechanism of volatile changes during fruit development of ‘Ehime 38’ (Citrus reticulata) and its bud mutant
Volatile compounds are important determinants affecting fruit flavor. Previous study has identified a bud mutant of ‘Ehime 38’ (Citrus reticulata) with different volatile profile. However, the volatile changes between WT and MT during fruit development and underlying mechanism remain elusive. In this study, a total of 35 volatile compounds were identified in the pulps of WT and MT at five developmental stages. Both varieties accumulated similar and the highest levels of volatiles at stage S1, and showed a downward trend as the fruit develops. However, the total volatile contents in the pulps of MT were 1.4–2.5 folds higher than those in WT at stages S2-S5, which was mainly due to the increase in the content of d-limonene. Transcriptomic and RT-qPCR analysis revealed that most genes in MEP pathway were positively correlated with the volatile contents, of which DXS1 might mainly contribute to the elevated volatiles accumulation in MT by increasing the flux into the MEP pathway. Moreover, temporal expression analysis indicated that these MEP pathway genes functioned at different developmental stages. This study provided comprehensive volatile metabolomics and transcriptomics characterizations of a citrus mutant during fruit development, which is valuable for fruit flavor improvement in citrus
Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
Effect of Mn Addition on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of CoCrFeNiPd High Entropy Alloy
CoCrFeNiPdMnx (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) high entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared and characterized. With an increase in Mn addition, the microstructures changed from dendrites (CoCrFeNiPd with a single face-centered-cubic (FCC) phase) to divorced eutectics (CoCrFeNiPdMn0.2 and CoCrFeNiPdMn0.4), to hypoeutectic microstructures (CoCrFeNiPdMn0.6), and finally to seaweed eutectic dendrites (CoCrFeNiPdMn0.8). The addition of Mn might change the interface energy anisotropy of both the FCC/liquid and MnPd-rich intermetallic compound/liquid interfaces, thus forming the seaweed eutectic dendrites. The hardness of the FCC phase was found to be highly related to the solute strengthening effect, the formation of nanotwins and the transition from CoCrFeNiPd-rich to CoCrFeNi-rich FCC phase. Hierarchical nanotwins were found in the MnPd-rich intermetallic compound and a decrease in either the spacing of primary twins or secondary twins led to an increase in hardness. The designing rules of EHEAs were discussed and the pseudo binary method was revised accordingly
Microbialproperty improvement of saline-alkali soil for vegetable cultivation in Shanghai coastal area and its evaluation
In order to improve the fertility of saline-alkali soil in Shanghai coastal area, and make it suitable for vegetable cultiration,in the study, the saline-alkali soil was mixed with organic fertilizer, and then sprayed with composite microbes, which have the ability of the synergistically degrading organic substrate. The results showed that the saline-alkali soil added with 5∶1 organic fertilizer can rapidly increase the utilization ability soil organic matter. The soil microbial populations and microbial diversity index were significantly improved when applied with the 0.5% composite microbial liquid which containeds 1∶3∶3∶1 of Bacillus licheniformis,Pseudomonas sp., Flavobacterium sp.and Sphingomonas sp..At the same time, the enzymology indicators of soil urease, phosphatase, cellulase and catalase increased significantly. The vegetable cultivation experiments showed that:the biomass of Brassica chinensis nearly doubled in the original saline-alkali soil, while the yield of organic fertilizer increased 30.2% after 50 days. The research result on of the biological improvement for saline-alkali soil will have good application value in vegetable planting in coastal saline-alkali soil
In Situ Observation of Microstructural and Inclusions Evolution in High-Strength Steel Deposited Metals with Various Rare Earth Pr Contents
The evolution of austenite, acicular ferrite, upper bainite and martensite, and the nucleation of inclusions in the microstructure of high-strength steel deposited metals, was systematically investigated using three kinds of A5.28 E120C-K4 metal-cored wires with various rare earth Pr contents. Grain structure evolution in the process of high temperature, dispersoid characteristics of inclusions and the crystallographic characteristics of the microstructure were assessed. Compared with no addition of Pr6O11, adding 1%Pr6O11 resulted in refined, spheroidized and dispersed inclusions in the deposited metal, leading to an increase in the pinning forces on the grain boundary movement, promoting the formation of an ultra-fine grain structure with an average diameter of 41 μm. The inclusions in the deposited metals were Mn-Si-Pr-Al-Ti-O after Pr addition; the average size of the inclusions in the Pr-containing deposited metals was the smallest, while the number and density of inclusions was the highest. The size of effective inclusions (nucleus of acicular ferrite formation) was mainly in the range of 0.6–1.5 μm. In addition, the content of upper bainite decreased, while the percentage of acicular ferrite increased by 24% due to the increase in the number of effective inclusions in the Pr-containing deposited metals in this study. This study shows that the addition of 1% Pr6O11 is efficient in achieving fine interlaced multiphase with an ultrafine-grained structure, resulting in an enhancement of the impact toughness of the deposited metal
