    Flexible learning programme in vocational education: a case study

    The Vocational Training Council (VTC) is undergoing a transformation that has reshaped many aspects of its organization; in particular, the course design and the way these courses are delivered. This paper presents a case study of the planning and design of a typical part-time vocational course curriculum at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocation Education (HKIVE). It outlines the considerations that the course team has to face. First, the aims of the Higher Certificate and Higher Diploma courses are highlighted. The major influence on the course aims for the curriculum, the social and economic efficiency factor, is discussed. A further aim, the learnercentered consideration, is identified. Given clear aims, goals and objectives, the design of the course structure proceeds. Subsequently, a suite of curriculum is proposed

    Exploring Randomly Wired Neural Networks for Climate Model Emulation

    Exploring the climate impacts of various anthropogenic emissions scenarios is key to making informed decisions for climate change mitigation and adaptation. State-of-the-art Earth system models can provide detailed insight into these impacts, but have a large associated computational cost on a per-scenario basis. This large computational burden has driven recent interest in developing cheap machine learning models for the task of climate model emulation. In this manuscript, we explore the efficacy of randomly wired neural networks for this task. We describe how they can be constructed and compare them to their standard feedforward counterparts using the ClimateBench dataset. Specifically, we replace the serially connected dense layers in multilayer perceptrons, convolutional neural networks, and convolutional long short-term memory networks with randomly wired dense layers and assess the impact on model performance for models with 1 million and 10 million parameters. We find average performance improvements of 4.2% across model complexities and prediction tasks, with substantial performance improvements of up to 16.4% in some cases. Furthermore, we find no significant difference in prediction speed between networks with standard feedforward dense layers and those with randomly wired layers. These findings indicate that randomly wired neural networks may be suitable direct replacements for traditional dense layers in many standard models

    The role of family support in work-family balance and subjective well-being of SME owners

    Drawing on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, we examine the role of two types of family supportā€”emotional and instrumental supportā€”in work-family balance and subjective well-being of small and medium enterprise (SME) owners. Using a sample of French SME owners, our results show that work-family balance mediates the relationship between family support and subjective well-being of SME owners. Surprisingly, while emotional support has a positive association, instrumental support has a negative association with the subjective well-being of SME owners via work-family balance. We provide a theoretical explanation by integrating COR theory with the threat to self-esteem model

    An Agent-Based Model of Collective Emotions in Online Communities

    We develop a agent-based framework to model the emergence of collective emotions, which is applied to online communities. Agents individual emotions are described by their valence and arousal. Using the concept of Brownian agents, these variables change according to a stochastic dynamics, which also considers the feedback from online communication. Agents generate emotional information, which is stored and distributed in a field modeling the online medium. This field affects the emotional states of agents in a non-linear manner. We derive conditions for the emergence of collective emotions, observable in a bimodal valence distribution. Dependent on a saturated or a superlinear feedback between the information field and the agent's arousal, we further identify scenarios where collective emotions only appear once or in a repeated manner. The analytical results are illustrated by agent-based computer simulations. Our framework provides testable hypotheses about the emergence of collective emotions, which can be verified by data from online communities.Comment: European Physical Journal B (in press), version 2 with extended introduction, clarification

    Estrogen receptor-Ī± recruits P-TEFb to overcome transcriptional pausing in intron 1 of the MYB gene

    The MYB proto-oncogene is expressed in most estrogen receptor-positive (ERĪ± +) breast tumors and cell lines. Expression of MYB is controlled, in breast cancer and other cell types, by a transcriptional pausing mechanism involving an attenuation site located āˆ¼1.7kb downstream from the transcription start site. In breast cancer cells, ligand-bound ERĪ± binds close to, and drives transcription beyond this attenuation site, allowing synthesis of complete transcripts. However, little is known, in general, about the factors involved in relieving transcriptional attenuation, or specifically how ERĪ± coordinates such factors to promote transcriptional elongation. Using cyclin dependent kinase 9 (CDK9) inhibitors, reporter gene assays and measurements of total and intronic MYB transcription, we show that functionally active CDK9 is required for estrogen-dependent transcriptional elongation. We further show by ChIP and co-immunoprecipitation studies that the P-TEFb complex (CDK9/CyclinT1) is recruited to the attenuation region by ligand-bound ERĪ±, resulting in increased RNA polymerase II Ser-2 phosphorylation. These data provide new insights into MYB regulation, and given the critical roles of MYB in tumorigenesis, suggest targeting MYB elongation as potential therapeutic strategy

    Serial Cross-Sectional Observations of Sun-Protective Behaviors at an Annual Outdoor Motorsport Event in Tropical Queensland, Australia

    Skin cancer, the most prevalent cancer in Caucasians resid-ing at low latitudes, can primarily be prevented by avoiding overexposure to sunlight. Serial cross-sectional observations were conducted at an outdoor motorsport event held in Townsville, Queensland each July (Southern winter) to determine whether sun-protection habits changed over time. Most (71.1%) of the 1337 attendees observed (97.6% lightly pigmented skin, 64.0% male) wore a hat (any style shading the face), while few (18.5%) wore three-quarter or full-lengthsleeves. While hat-wearing rates (any style) were similar in 2009 (326, 72.6%) and 2013 (625, 70.4%), the use of sun-protective styles (wide-brimmed/bucket/legionnaires) decreased from 29.2% to 18.6% over the same period, primarily because the use of sun-protective hats halved (from 28.7% to 14.0%) among females, while decreasing from 29.4% to 21.1% in males. Although relatively few individuals wore sun-protective (three-quarter-length or full-length) sleeves regardless of year (OR=0.117, P<0.0001), encouragingly, the use of sun-protective sleeves more than doubled between 2009 (10.5%) and 2013 (22.5%). Interestingly females, albeit the minority, at this sporting event were less likely to wear a hat (OR=0.473, P<0.0001) than males. These findings highlight the need for continued momentum toward skin cancer primary prevention through sun protection with a dedicated focus on outdoor sporting settings
