    Charge Qubit Storage and Its Engineered Decoherence via Microwave Cavity

    We study the entanglement of the superconducting charge qubit with the quantized electromagnetic field in a microwave cavity. It can be controlled dynamically by a classical external field threading the SQUID within the charge qubit. Utilizing the controllable quantum entanglement, we can demonstrate the dynamic process of the quantum storage of information carried by charge qubit. On the other hand, based on this engineered quantum entanglement, we can also demonstrate a progressive decoherence of charge qubit with quantum jump due to the coupling with the cavity field in quasi-classical state.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Comparison of photosynthetic fluorescence characteristics of several submerged plants in Honghu Lake, China

    Submerged plants are the pioneer species of eutrophic water remediation, and they are important for maintaining the health of aquatic ecosystem, while light is the main limiting factor for the growth of submerged plants. In this study, we measured the maximal quantum yields of photosystemⅡ(Fv/Fm) and rapid light curves (RLCs) of five dominant submerged macrophytes in situ by using pulse-amplitude modulated fluorometer (Diving-PAM). Results revealed that P. crispus L. and M. verticillatum L. had the highest Fv/Fm value, all species’ Fv/Fm are less than 0.8. In addition, the variation trends of Fv'/Fm' and Fv/Fm were same. All species showed statistically significant differences in α, while P. crispus L. and M. verticillatum L. showed the highest α value in the five species. And the variation trends of rETRm and Ek were basically the same. It indicated that P. crispus L. and M. verticillatum L., both of which had high photosynthetic efficiency, had excellent ability to withstand hard light. Compared five species, P. crispus L. and M. verticillatum L. had resistance capacity to hard light as well as faster photosynthetic rate, and V. natans (Lour.) Hara had higher resistance capacity to low light. Thus, when submerged plants are used for water restoration, V. natans (Lour.) Hara could be regarded as a pioneer species in eutrophication water restoration. P. crispus L. and M. verticillatum L. will have better effects when used in shallow water areas

    High-fidelity, broadband stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light using fast noise modulation

    We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method

    Short-Term Efficacy of Laparoscopic Treatment for Colorectal Cancer in Patients with Schistosomiasis Japonica

    Introduction. Schistosomiasis is associated with numerous complications such as thrombocytopenia, liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and colitis. To the best of our knowledge, the feasibility and outcomes of laparoscopic colorectal surgery in patients with schistosomiasis have not yet been studied. Methods. In this study, the data of 280 patients with colorectal carcinoma along with schistosomiasis japonica infection who underwent laparoscopic or open colorectal surgery were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative data, operative data, pathological outcomes, postoperative complications, and recovery were compared between patients in the laparoscopic (LAC) and open (OC) groups. Results. There were no significant differences in the preoperative data between the groups. However, fewer postoperative complications, especially severe hypoproteinemia, early postoperative feeding, and shorter postoperative hospital stay, were observed in patients in the LAC group (P<0.001). The mean operative time was higher in the LAC group (180 min versus 158 min; P<0.001), while the mean blood loss was similar (95 mL versus 108 mL; P=0.196) between groups. The mean number of lymph nodes harvested was also similar in both groups (15 versus 16; P=0.133). Conclusion. Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer is safe in patients with schistosomiasis japonica and has better short-term outcomes than open surgery

    Metacognitive planning: Development and validation of an online measure.

    Planning is the critical first stage of metacognition. Although it has long been emphasized theoretically, it has not been the subject of much empirical study due to the lack of a valid assessment tool. Because planning is a metacognitive process, online methods that collect data during task performance would much better capture it. The present study was conducted to develop an online measure of metacognitive planning. Researchers designed a puzzle task that took the form of the popular game Sokoban, and the ratio between planning time and total time of each item was chosen as the metacognitive planning index. The task was administered to a heterogeneous sample of 440 participants composed of college students as well as 5th-, 7th-, and 10th-grade students. The results showed that valid inference could be made from the time ratio score. Cronbach’s alpha and test–retest correlation provided robust evidence of reliability of the time ratio score. Confirmatory factor analysis further confirmed its unidimensionality. Validity evidence also supported the use of the time ratio score. After controlling for demographic variables, intelligence, and motivation, the time ratio score still accounted for a significant proportion of variance of Sokoban performance, the Tower of London performance, and academic achievement. The time ratio score was also found to increase with age. Taken together, the results of the study revealed that the time ratio is a psychometrically sound online measure of metacognitive plannin
