    Unifying and Merging Well-trained Deep Neural Networks for Inference Stage

    We propose a novel method to merge convolutional neural-nets for the inference stage. Given two well-trained networks that may have different architectures that handle different tasks, our method aligns the layers of the original networks and merges them into a unified model by sharing the representative codes of weights. The shared weights are further re-trained to fine-tune the performance of the merged model. The proposed method effectively produces a compact model that may run original tasks simultaneously on resource-limited devices. As it preserves the general architectures and leverages the co-used weights of well-trained networks, a substantial training overhead can be reduced to shorten the system development time. Experimental results demonstrate a satisfactory performance and validate the effectiveness of the method.Comment: To appear in the 27th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence and the 23rd European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2018.     A Taiwanese Perspective: Exploring the relationship Between Confucian Body Philosophy and Dance/Movement Therapy

    This thesis explores the correspondence between dance/movement therapy and Confucian body philosophy. It is inspired by the author’s embodied experiences during her study in the field of dance/movement therapy in America while holding the identity as an international student who came from Taiwan. Because of the cultural differences, the author experienced a learning curve in understanding theories that are mostly developed in Western society. Through embodying foreign principles, the author pursues various perspectives in implementing American ideology while having a greater sense of her Taiwanese self. In these embodied experiences, three significant themes arise when paralleling Confucian body philosophy and dance/movement therapy theories. The body-heart/body-mind connection, the understanding of qi/energy, and the heart-qi-shape’s connection are highlighted in this thesis. Cultural differences can have the possibility to enrich the dance/movement therapy field, and discovering diverse cultural practices should be explored

    Study of Circulating Antibodies to Heat-Shock Proteins 60 and 70 in Autistic Subjects

    Autism is a behavioral syndrome characterized by a severe impairment of reciprocal social relations, and of verbal and nonverbal communications. Many different etiologic factors such as viral infection and genetic predisposition have been proposed to explain the development of this disorder. Immune abnormalities, such as a decreased lymphoblastic response to T-cell mitogen, defective antibody responses to rubella vaccine, and decreased numbers of T lymphocytes, also have been identified in a subpopulation of patients with autism, which implies that the development of autism in some cases may be due to autoimmune mechanisms. Recent evidence suggests that immune response to the heat-shock proteins 60 and 70 is associated with several autoimmune diseases, including juvenile arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Therefore, in this study, the plasmas of patients with autism were examined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for antibodies to the heat-shock proteins 60 and 70. The autistic subjects were found to have increased levels of antibodies against heat-shock protein 70 as compared to that of age-matched controls (p=O. 0148). However, levels of antibodies to heat shock protein 60 in the autistic subjects showed considerable individual variation and no significant difference was found. Abnormal immune reactions to myelin basic protein have also been found in autistic subjects. Since epitopes on myelin basic protein have been shown to crossreact with determinants on heat-shock protein 60, the similarity between anti-myelin basic protein monoclonal antibodies and antiheat- shock protein 60 antibodies in the autistic subjects was also studied. The results showed no crossreactivity between these two antibodies. In conclusion, the data from the study of antibodies against heat-shock protein 70 suggest an elevated immune response to heat-shock protein 70 in autistic subjects. This result implies that autism could be an autoimmune disease

    Temporal Analysis of Language through Neural Language Models

    We provide a method for automatically detecting change in language across time through a chronologically trained neural language model. We train the model on the Google Books Ngram corpus to obtain word vector representations specific to each year, and identify words that have changed significantly from 1900 to 2009. The model identifies words such as "cell" and "gay" as having changed during that time period. The model simultaneously identifies the specific years during which such words underwent change
