Modified evolution of stellar binaries from supermassive black hole binaries
The evolution of main sequence binaries resided in the galactic centre is
influenced a lot by the central super massive black hole (SMBH). Due to this
perturbation, the stars in a dense environment are likely to experience mergers
or collisions through secular or non-secular interactions. In this work, we
study the dynamics of the stellar binaries at galactic center, perturbed by
another distant SMBH. Geometrically, such a four-body system is supposed to be
decomposed into the inner triple (SMBH-star-star) and the outer triple
(SMBH-stellar binary-SMBH). We survey the parameter space and determine the
criteria analytically for the stellar mergers and the tidal disruption events
(TDEs). For a relative distant and equal masses SMBH binary, the stars have
more opportunities to merge as a result from the Lidov-Kozai(LK) oscillations
in the inner triple. With a sample of tight stellar binaries, our numerical
experiments reveal that a significant fraction of the binaries, ~70 per cent,
experience merger eventually. Whereas the majority of the stellar TDEs are
likely to occur at a close periapses to the SMBH, induced by the outer Kozai
effect. The tidal disruptions are found numerically as many as ~10 per cent for
a close SMBH binary that is enhanced significantly than the one without the
external SMBH. These effects require the outer perturber to have an inclined
orbit (>=40 degree) relatively to the inner orbital plane and may lead to a
burst of the extremely astronomical events associated with the detection of the
SMBH binary.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS in pres
Rosen-Zener interferometry with Ultracold Atoms
We propose a time-domain "interferometer" based on ultracold Bose atoms
loaded on a double well potential. By the adiabatic Rosen-Zener process, the
barrier between two wells is ramped down slowly, held for a while, then ramped
back. Starting with a coherent state of double well system, the final
occupations on one well show interesting interference fringes in the
time-domain. The fringe pattern is sensitive to the initial state, the
interatomic interaction, and the external forces such as gravity which can
change the shape of the double well. In this sense, this interferometric scheme
has the potentials for precision measurements with ultracold atoms. The
underlying mechanism is revealed and possible applications are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Meta-Auto-Decoder: A Meta-Learning Based Reduced Order Model for Solving Parametric Partial Differential Equations
Many important problems in science and engineering require solving the
so-called parametric partial differential equations (PDEs), i.e., PDEs with
different physical parameters, boundary conditions, shapes of computational
domains, etc. Typical reduced order modeling techniques accelarate solution of
the parametric PDEs by projecting them onto a linear trial manifold constructed
in the offline stage. These methods often need a predefined mesh as well as a
series of precomputed solution snapshots, andmay struggle to balance between
efficiency and accuracy due to the limitation of the linear ansatz. Utilizing
the nonlinear representation of neural networks, we propose Meta-Auto-Decoder
(MAD) to construct a nonlinear trial manifold, whose best possible performance
is measured theoretically by the decoder width. Based on the meta-learning
concept, the trial manifold can be learned in a mesh-free and unsupervised way
during the pre-training stage. Fast adaptation to new (possibly heterogeneous)
PDE parameters is enabled by searching on this trial manifold, and optionally
fine-tuning the trial manifold at the same time. Extensive numerical
experiments show that the MAD method exhibits faster convergence speed without
losing accuracy than other deep learning-based methods
The Risk of Cryptocurrency Payment Adoption
The rapid development of blockchain technology enables the application of cryptocurrency payment in real business practice. However, no research has examined the net effect of adopting such technologies on firm performance. Leveraging a unique research context that Booking.com starts cooperating with Travala.com, this study collects consumer reviews of the same hotels listed on Expedia and Booking.com in all states of the US and employs difference-in-differences designs. This study has three main findings. First, the adoption of cryptocurrency payment via Travala.com induces a net decrement in online sales on Booking.com. Second, the sales decrement is mainly driven by upscale hotels. Third, the sales decrement is severer when the cryptocurrency price is lower. These results are robust across hotels in all the states of USA and can be generalized using a later adoption of cryptocurrency payment. We interpret the mechanism as users’ negative associations and provide evidence by an event study analysis
