Real-time cavity QED with single atoms

    Get PDF
We report the first measurement of the real-time evolution of the complex field amplitude brought on by single atom transits. We show the variation in time of both quadrature amplitudes (simultaneously recorded) of the light transmitted through the cavity, as well the resultant optical phase for a single atom transit event. In this particular measurement, the cavity and laser were both detuned by 10 MHz from the Cs resonance

Precision spectroscopy and density-dependent frequency shifts in ultracold Sr

By varying the density of an ultracold 88^{88}Sr sample from 10910^9 cm−3^{-3} to >1012> 10^{12} cm−3^{-3}, we make the first definitive measurement of the density-related frequency shift and linewidth broadening of the 1S0^1S_0 - 3P1^3P_1 optical clock transition in an alkaline earth system. In addition, we report the most accurate measurement to date of the 88^{88}Sr 1S0−3P1^1S_0 - ^3P_1 optical clock transition frequency. Including a detailed analysis of systematic errors, the frequency is (434829121312334±20stat±33sys434 829 121 312 334 \pm 20_{stat} \pm 33_{sys}) Hz.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. submitte

On the comparison of volumes of quantum states

This paper aims to study the \a-volume of \cK, an arbitrary subset of the set of N×NN\times N density matrices. The \a-volume is a generalization of the Hilbert-Schmidt volume and the volume induced by partial trace. We obtain two-side estimates for the \a-volume of \cK in terms of its Hilbert-Schmidt volume. The analogous estimates between the Bures volume and the \a-volume are also established. We employ our results to obtain bounds for the \a-volume of the sets of separable quantum states and of states with positive partial transpose (PPT). Hence, our asymptotic results provide answers for questions listed on page 9 in \cite{K. Zyczkowski1998} for large NN in the sense of \a-volume. \vskip 3mm PACS numbers: 02.40.Ft, 03.65.Db, 03.65.Ud, 03.67.M

    Prospects for a mHz-linewidth laser

We propose a new light source based on having alkaline-earth atoms in an optical lattice collectively emit photons on an ultra-narrow clock transition into the mode of a high Q-resonator. The resultant optical radiation has an extremely narrow linewidth in the mHz range, even smaller than that of the clock transition itself due to collective effects. A power level of order 10−12W10^{-12}W is possible, sufficient for phase-locking a slave optical local oscillator. Realizing this light source has the potential to improve the stability of the best clocks by two orders of magnitude.Comment: minor revisions + shortening; factor 2 algebra mistake correcte

Single crystal MgB2 with anisotropic superconducting properties

The discovery of superconductor in magnesium diboride MgB2 with high Tc (39 K) has raised some challenging issues; whether this new superconductor resembles a high temperature cuprate superconductor(HTS) or a low temperature metallic superconductor; which superconducting mechanism, a phonon- mediated BCS or a hole superconducting mechanism or other new exotic mechanism may account for this superconductivity; and how about its future for applications. In order to clarify the above questions, experiments using the single crystal sample are urgently required. Here we have first succeeded in obtaining the single crystal of this new MgB2 superconductivity, and performed its electrical resistance and magnetization measurements. Their experiments show that the electronic and magnetic properties depend on the crystallographic direction. Our results indicate that the single crystal MgB2 superconductor shows anisotropic superconducting properties and thus can provide scientific basis for the research of its superconducting mechanism and its applications.Comment: 7 pages pdf fil
