Emergent Geometry and Quantum Gravity
We explain how quantum gravity can be defined by quantizing spacetime itself.
A pinpoint is that the gravitational constant G = L_P^2 whose physical
dimension is of (length)^2 in natural unit introduces a symplectic structure of
spacetime which causes a noncommutative spacetime at the Planck scale L_P. The
symplectic structure of spacetime M leads to an isomorphism between symplectic
geometry (M, \omega) and Riemannian geometry (M, g) where the deformations of
symplectic structure \omega in terms of electromagnetic fields F=dA are
transformed into those of Riemannian metric g. This approach for quantum
gravity allows a background independent formulation where spacetime as well as
matter fields is equally emergent from a universal vacuum of quantum gravity
which is thus dubbed as the quantum equivalence principle.Comment: Invited Review for Mod. Phys. Lett. A, 17 page

A scalar nonlocal bifurcation of solitary waves for coupled nonlinear Schroedinger systems
An explanation is given for previous numerical results which suggest a
certain bifurcation of `vector solitons' from scalar (single-component)
solitary waves in coupled nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) systems. The bifurcation
in question is nonlocal in the sense that the vector soliton does not have a
small-amplitude component, but instead approaches a solitary wave of one
component with two infinitely far-separated waves in the other component. Yet,
it is argued that this highly nonlocal event can be predicted from a purely
local analysis of the central solitary wave alone. Specifically the
linearisation around the central wave should contain asymptotics which grow at
precisely the speed of the other-component solitary waves on the two wings.
This approximate argument is supported by both a detailed analysis based on
matched asymptotic expansions, and numerical experiments on two example
systems. The first is the usual coupled NLS system involving an arbitrary ratio
between the self-phase and cross-phase modulation terms, and the second is a
coupled NLS system with saturable nonlinearity that has recently been
demonstrated to support stable multi-peaked solitary waves. The asymptotic
analysis further reveals that when the curves which define the proposed
criterion for scalar nonlocal bifurcations intersect with boundaries of certain
local bifurcations, the nonlocal bifurcation could turn from scalar to
non-scalar at the intersection. This phenomenon is observed in the first
example. Lastly, we have also selectively tested the linear stability of
several solitary waves just born out of scalar nonlocal bifurcations. We found
that they are linearly unstable. However, they can lead to stable solitary
waves through parameter continuation.Comment: To appear in Nonlinearit
Order-N Density-Matrix Electronic-Structure Method for General Potentials
A new order-N method for calculating the electronic structure of general
(non-tight-binding) potentials is presented. The method uses a combination of
the ``purification''-based approaches used by Li, Nunes and Vanderbilt, and
Daw, and a representation of the density matrix based on ``travelling basis
orbitals''. The method is applied to several one-dimensional examples,
including the free electron gas, the ``Morse'' bound-state potential, a
discontinuous potential that mimics an interface, and an oscillatory potential
that mimics a semiconductor. The method is found to contain Friedel
oscillations, quantization of charge in bound states, and band gap formation.
Quantitatively accurate agreement with exact results is found in most cases.
Possible advantages with regard to treating electron-electron interactions and
arbitrary boundary conditions are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, REVTEX, 7 postscript figures (not quite perfect
An improved constraint satisfaction adaptive neural network for job-shop scheduling
Copyright @ Springer Science + Business Media, LLC 2009This paper presents an improved constraint satisfaction adaptive neural network for job-shop scheduling problems. The neural network is constructed based on the constraint conditions of a job-shop scheduling problem. Its structure and neuron connections can change adaptively according to the real-time constraint satisfaction situations that arise during the solving process. Several heuristics are also integrated within the neural network to enhance its convergence, accelerate its convergence, and improve the quality of the solutions produced. An experimental study based on a set of benchmark job-shop scheduling problems shows that the improved constraint satisfaction adaptive neural network outperforms the original constraint satisfaction adaptive neural network in terms of computational time and the quality of schedules it produces. The neural network approach is also experimentally validated to outperform three classical heuristic algorithms that are widely used as the basis of many state-of-the-art scheduling systems. Hence, it may also be used to construct advanced job-shop scheduling systems. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/01 and in part by the National Nature Science Fundation of China under Grant 60821063 and National Basic Research Program of China under Grant 2009CB320601
Network analysis of online bidding activity
With the advent of digital media, people are increasingly resorting to online
channels for commercial transactions. Online auction is a prototypical example.
In such online transactions, the pattern of bidding activity is more complex
than traditional online transactions; this is because the number of bidders
participating in a given transaction is not bounded and the bidders can also
easily respond to the bidding instantaneously. By using the recently developed
network theory, we study the interaction patterns between bidders (items) who
(that) are connected when they bid for the same item (if the item is bid by the
same bidder). The resulting network is analyzed by using the hierarchical
clustering algorithm, which is used for clustering analysis for expression data
from DNA microarrays. A dendrogram is constructed for the item subcategories;
this dendrogram is compared with a traditional classification scheme. The
implication of the difference between the two is discussed.Comment: 8 pages and 11 figure
Collective excitation of quantum wires and effect of spin-orbit coupling in the presence of a magnetic field along the wire
The band structure of a quantum wire with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling
develops a pseudogap in the presence of a magnetic field along the wire. In
such a system spin mixing at the Fermi wavevectors and can be
different. We have investigated theoretically the collective mode of this
system, and found that the velocity of this collective excitation depends
sensitively on the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and magnetic
field. Our result suggests that the strength of the spin-orbit interaction can
be determined from the measurement of the velocity.Comment: RevTeX 4 file, 4pages, 6 eps figures. To appear in Physical Review
Duality and Symmetry in Chiral Potts Model
We discover an Ising-type duality in the general -state chiral Potts
model, which is the Kramers-Wannier duality of planar Ising model when N=2.
This duality relates the spectrum and eigenvectors of one chiral Potts model at
a low temperature (of small ) to those of another chiral Potts model at a
high temperature (of ). The -model and chiral Potts model
on the dual lattice are established alongside the dual chiral Potts models.
With the aid of this duality relation, we exact a precise relationship between
the Onsager-algebra symmetry of a homogeneous superintegrable chiral Potts
model and the -loop-algebra symmetry of its associated
spin- XXZ chain through the identification of their eigenstates.Comment: Latex 34 pages, 2 figures; Typos and misprints in Journal version are

Edge of a Half-Filled Landau Level
We have investigated the electron occupation number of the edge of a quantum
Hall (QH) droplet at using exact diagonalization technique and
composite fermion trial wavefunction. We find that the electron occupation
numbers near the edge obey a scaling behavior. The scaling result indicates the
existence of a well-defined edge corresponding to the radius of a compact
droplet of uniform filling factor 1/2. We find that the occupation number
beyond this edge point is substantial, which is qualitatively different from
the case of odd-denominator QH states. We relate these features to the
different ways in which composite fermions occupy Landau levels for odd and
even denominator states.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
Calculation of reduced density matrices from correlation functions
It is shown that for solvable fermionic and bosonic lattice systems, the
reduced density matrices can be determined from the properties of the
correlation functions. This provides the simplest way to these quantities which
are used in the density-matrix renormalization group method.Comment: 4 page
