In China, Naodesheng Pills (NDSP) are prescribed to prevent and treat cerebrosclerosis and stroke. However, the protective effects and mechanism of action of NDSP against cerebral I/R-induced ferroptosis remain unclear. We investigated whether NDSP exerts its protective effects against I/R injury by regulating ferroptosis and aimed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Methods: The efficacy of NDSP was evaluated using a Sprague-Dawley rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion and an in vitro oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model. Brain injury was assessed using 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC), hematoxylin and eosin staining, Nissl staining, and neurological scoring. Western blotting was performed to determine the expression levels of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), divalent metal-ion transporter-1 (DMT1), solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11), and transferrin receptor 1 (TFR1). Iron levels, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial morphology were also evaluated. Network pharmacology was used to assess the associated mechanisms. Results: NDSP (1.08 g/kg) significantly improved cerebral infarct area, cerebral water content, neurological scores, and cerebral tissue damage. Furthermore, NDSP inhibited I/R- and OGD/R-induced ferroptosis, as evidenced by the increased protein expression of GPX4 and SLC7A11, suppression of TFR1 and DMT1, and an overall reduction in oxidative stress and Fe2+ levels. The protective effects of NDSP in vitro were abolished by the GPX4 inhibitor RSL3. Network pharmacology analysis revealed that ERK1/2 was the core target gene and that NDSP reduced the amount of phosphorylated ERK1/2.Conclusion: NDSP exerts its protective effects against I/R by inhibiting cerebral I/R-induced ferroptosis, and this mechanism is associated with the regulation of ferroptosis via the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Keywords: Naodesheng pills, ferroptosis, cerebral ischemia/reperfusion, glutathione peroxidase 4, mitogen-activated protein kinase 1/

A CE/SE Scheme for Flows in Porous Media and Its Applications

In this paper, a new computational scheme for solving flows in porous media was proposed. The scheme was based on an improved CE/SE method (the space-time Conservation Element and Solution Element method). We described porous flows by adopting DFB (Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy) equation. The comparison between our computational results and Ghia's confirmed the high accuracy, resolution, and efficiency of our CE/SE scheme. The proposed first-order CE/SE scheme is a new reliable way for numerical simulations of flows in porous media. After investigation of effects of Darcy number on porous flow, it shows that Darcy number has dominant influence on porous flow for the Reynolds number and porosity considered

Increased renal clearance of rocuronium compensates for chronic loss of bile excretion, via upregulation of Oatp2

Requirement for rocuronium upon surgery changes only minimally in patients with end-stage liver diseases. Our study consisted of both human and rat studies to explore the reason. The reduction rate of rocuronium infusion required to maintain neuromuscular blockade during the anhepatic phase (relative to paleohepatic phase) was examined in 16 children with congenital biliary atresia receiving orthotopic liver transplantation. Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of rocuronium were studied based on BDL rats. The role of increased Oatp2 and decrease Oatp1 expressions in renal compensation were explored. The reduction of rocuronium requirements significantly decreased in obstructively jaundiced children (24 +/- 9 vs. 39 +/- 11%). TOF50 in BDL rats was increased by functional removal of the kidneys but not the liver, and the percentage of rocuronium excretion through urine increased (20.3 +/- 6.9 vs. 8.6 +/- 1.8%), while that decreased through bile in 28d-BDL compared with control group. However, this enhanced renal secretion for rocuronium was eliminated by Oatp2 knock-down, rather than Oatp1 overexpression (28-d BDL vs. Oatp1-ShRNA or Oatp2-ShRNA, 20.3 +/- 6.9 vs. 17.0 +/- 6.6 or 9.3 +/- 3.2%). Upon chronic/sub-chronic loss of bile excretion, rocuronium clearance via the kidneys is enhanced, by Oatp2 up-regulation.published_or_final_versio

A novel negative tone molecular resist molecule featuring a tert-butyloxycarbonyl protected phenol malonate group bonded to a 1,8-Diazabicycloundece-7-ene is presented. The resist shows high-resolution capability in electron beam lithography at a range of beam energies. The resist demonstrated a sensitivity of 18.7 μC/cm2 at 20 kV. Dense features with a line width of 15 nm have been demonstrated at 30 kV, whilst a feature size of 12.5 nm was achieved for dense lines at 100 kV

One-step fabrication of biocompatible chitosan-coated ZnS and ZnS:Mn2+ quantum dots via a γ-radiation route

Biocompatible chitosan-coated ZnS quantum dots [CS-ZnS QDs] and chitosan-coated ZnS:Mn2+ quantum dots [CS-ZnS:Mn2+ QDs] were successfully fabricated via a convenient one-step γ-radiation route. The as-obtained QDs were around 5 nm in diameter with excellent water-solubility. These QDs emitting strong visible blue or orange light under UV excitation were successfully used as labels for PANC-1 cells. The cell experiments revealed that CS-ZnS and CS-ZnS:Mn2+ QDs showed low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility, which offered possibilities for further biomedical applications. Moreover, this convenient synthesis strategy could be extended to fabricate other nanoparticles coated with chitosan

This article aims to present a picture of how a university discipline has been created in Lithuania, given the background of changes caused by the Lithuania’s emancipation from the Soviet Union. The theoretical frame of reference is provided by a modified model of Bronfenbrenners developmental ecology. Data collection has primarily been in the form of interviews with university staff from Lithuanian institutions for higher education. In addition to the interviews, literature lists, course schedules and other key documents have been collected and analysed. The analysis focuses on individual’s conceptualisation of three main areas. The study demonstrates how the creation of management and economics as a university discipline in Lithuania has been formed by a combination of political/ideological, economic, institutional and individual factors. One of the study’s main contributions is to highlight the significance of the concept of academic freedom and to focus on the paradox, where constraint under the old system is replaced by another form of constraint. In this case, where the rigidity of the old Soviet doctrine is replaced by a new freedom; but instead of being given greater opportunities to influence and change the subject, the academic staff are forced into a position where, once again they are subjugated to the influences of international sources

A large-scale subjective survey was conducted in six shopping malls in Harbin City, China, to determine the influence of social and behavioural characteristics of users on their evaluation of subjective loudness and acoustic comfort. The analysis of social characteristics shows that evaluation of subjective loudness is influenced by income and occupation, with correlation coefficients or contingency coefficients of 0.10 to 0.40 (p<0.05 or p<0.01). Meanwhile, evaluation of acoustic comfort evaluation is influenced by income, education level, and occupation, with correlation coefficients or contingency coefficients of 0.10 to 0.60 (p<0.05 or p<0.01). The effect of gender and age on evaluation of subjective loudness and acoustic comfort is statistically insignificant. The effects of occupation are mainly caused by the differences in income and education level, in which the effects of income are greater than that of education level. In terms of behavioural characteristics, evaluation of subjective loudness is influenced by the reason for visit, frequency of visit, and length of stay, with correlation coefficients or contingency coefficients of 0.10 to 0.40 (p<0.05 or p<0.01). Evaluation of acoustic comfort is influenced by the reason for visit to the site, the frequency of visit, length of stay, and also season of visit, with correlation coefficients of 0.10 to 0.30 (p<0.05 or p<0.01). In particular, users who are waiting for someone show lower evaluation of acoustic comfort, whereas users who go to shopping malls more than once a month show higher evaluation of acoustic comfort. On the contrary, the influence of the period of visit and the accompanying persons are found insignificant
