Hierarchical quantum master equation with semiclassical Drude dissipation

We propose a nonperturbative quantum dissipation theory, in term of hierarchical quantum master equation. It may be used with a great degree of confidence to various dynamics systems in condensed phases. The theoretical development is rooted in an improved semiclassical treatment of Drude bath, beyond the conventional high temperature approximations. It leads to the new theory a simple modification but important improvement over the conventional stochastic Liouville equation theory, without extra numerical cost. Its broad range of validity and applicability is extensively demonstrated with two--level electron transfer model systems, where the new theory can be considered as the modified Zusman equation. We also present a criterion, which depends only on the system--bath coupling strength, characteristic bath memory time, and temperature, to estimate the performance of the hierarchical quantum master equation.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, submitted to J. AIM: To compare the visual field characteristics of patients with idiopathic demyelinating optic neuritis(IDON), non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy(NAION)and papilledema(PE), and analyze their occurrence mechanism.<p>METHODS: It was a retrospective case series study. Visual field data of patients with IDON, NAION, and PE who were treated in Department of Ophthalmology, the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, China Medical University from March 2011 to May 2012 were collected. Ages, gender, best-corrected visual acuities(BCVA), pupil sizes, the visual field testing duration, types of visual field defect, the defect locations, mean deviation(MD)and pattern standard deviation(PSD)of the patients were compared and the reasons of these differences were analyzed by SPSS 12.0.<p>RESULTS: There were 17 cases(20 eyes)with IDON, 21 cases(26 eyes)with NAION, 11 cases(22 eyes)with PE included in this study. All differences from mean age, gender composition, BCVA, pupil size, visual field testing duration, MD and PSD among three groups had statistical significance(<i>P</i><0.05).<p>CONCLUSION: Although these visual fields of patients with IDON, NAION and PE are complex, they have different features closely related with the pathogenesis of disease. These features can provide important evidence for differential diagnosis among optic nerve diseases

Investigation of Patch Antenna Based on Photonic Band-Gap Substrate with Heterostructures

The characteristics of the patch antenna based on photonic band-gap (PBG) substrate with heterostructures were studied numerically by using the method of finite difference time domain (FDTD). The results indicate that, comparing to the conventional patch antennas, the expansion of working frequency band of the new patch antenna can be realized and its radiation efficiency also can be improved notably with the influence of PBG. In addition, for this new kind of patch antenna, its return loss is much less and there are two minimum values for return loss corresponding to the resonant frequency of the two different photonic crystals made of the substrate. Its physical mechanism lies on the PBG which suppresses the surface waves propagating along the surface of the substrate and reflects most of electromagnetic wave energy radiated to the substrate significantly

Quantum electrodynamics in a whispering-gallery microcavity coated with a polymer nanolayer

Quasi-transverse-electric and -transverse-magnetic fundamental whispering gallery modes in a polymer-coated silica microtoroid are theoretically investigated and demonstrated to possess very high-quality factors. The existence of a nanometer-thickness layer not only evidently reduces the cavity mode volume but also draws the maximal electric field's position of the mode to the outside of the silica toroid, where single quantum dots or nanocrystals are located. Both effects result in a strongly enhanced coherent interaction between a single dipole (for example, a single defect center in a diamond crystal) and the quantized cavity mode. Since the coated microtoroid is highly feasible and robust in experiments, it may offer an excellent platform to study strong-coupling cavity quantum electrodynamics, quantum information, and quantum computation

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Drought is one of the most important environmental factors causing water stress for cotton, and it greatly limits cotton growth and crop productivity. So far only a few drought-tolerance genes have been functionally characterized in details, and most efforts on this topic have been made in model organisms. Therefore, to identify more drought-related genes in cotton plays a crucial role in elucidating the underlying mechanisms of drought tolerance as well as utilizing bioengineering techniques to improve the tolerance in this organism.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Here we constructed a subtractive drought-tolerance cDNA library using suppressive subtractive hybridization (SSH). Through differential screening and bioinformatics analysis, we identified 392 positive clones with differential expression, corresponding 265 unique genes. By BLAST search against Genbank, we found that more than half of these EST sequences were homologous to those previously known drought-related genes and that there were 57 sequences with unknown functions, suggesting that many more genes are involved in this complex trait. Moreover, using RT-PCR, we examined the expression of nine representative candidate genes and confirmed that their expression levels were increased at different levels under drought stress.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results show that drought tolerance is a complex trait in cotton, which involves the coordination of many genes and multiple metabolism pathways. The candidate EST sequences we identified here would facilitate further functional studies of drought-related genes and provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of drought-stress tolerance and genetic breeding in cotton.</p

Objectives: To assess the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Methods: CEUS was performed in eighty-eight thyroid nodules. The patterns of CEUS were analyzed, and ARFI was then performed. The shear wave velocities (SWVs) of the nodules and the surrounding normal thyroid tissue were obtained. The areas under the curve (AUCs) and cut-off value were obtained by a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and diagnostic rate of each modality were assessed and compared using pathological diagnosis. Results: Among 88 nodules, 29 nodules were malignant and 59 were benign. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and diagnostic rate of CEUS were 79.3, 91.5, 82.1, 90, and 87.5%, respectively. Using a cut-off value of 2.565 m/s for SWV, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and diagnostic rate for malignancy were 75.9, 94.9, 88.0, 88.9, and 88.6%, respectively. The AUC was 0.878. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV and diagnostic rate of CEUS in combination with ARFI were 93.1, 89.8, 81.8, 96.3, and 90.9%, respectively. Conclusion: Both CEUS and ARFI are valuable for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Combining these two methods can improve the diagnostic rate
