    Fashion and Sustainability: Increasing Knowledge About Slow Fashion Through an Educational Module

    The purpose of this study was to understand whether exposure to education about slow fashion regarding its environmental benefits would influence consumers\u27 knowledge, attitudes, and purchase intentions toward slow fashion apparel. College-aged students were recruited for this study as they were the target market of fast fashion retailers. A mixed-method approach with three phases of data collection was implemented. A total of 163 participants participated in the study. Findings have suggested that a 30 minute educational module consisting of mostly text-based information with supplementary images made a significant, positive impact on young adult consumers’ knowledge of and attitudes toward slow fashion. Unexpectedly, purchase intentions toward slow fashion among the participants did not increase. Financial restrictions experienced by university students could have minimized their purchase intentions toward slow fashion apparel which tends to be more expensive than fast fashion. Manhattam, KS.RNA interference (RNAi) was first discovered in nematodes when exogenous double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) complementary to a specific gene suppressed expression of that gene [1]. Subsequently, much effort has been devoted to developing RNAi as a highly specific tool for therapeutic interventions and control of insect pests [2]. However, there are still many challenges associated with using RNAi to control insects, including efficient delivery and selection of appropriate targets. In this study, we evaluated three genes as potential targets for causing mortality via RNAi in German cockroach, Blatella germanica. German cockroaches are ubiquitous structural pests that can serve as reservoirs for species of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or fungi in humans [3,4] and is an excellent organism for exploring insect control using RNAi. Injection of dsRNA complementary to either tubulin (Tub, a cytoskeletal structural protein), VATPase subunit 1 (Vha, an integral membrane protein), or Snf7 (an ESCRT III protein) caused decreased survival with Snf7 causing the greatest and fastest mortality (LT50 = 8.2 days). Our results demonstrate that when suppressed with RNAi, these genes could be effective targets for cockroach control. Furthermore, knowing these genes can be effectively used for RNAi, we can now attempt to understand why methods other than injection for RNAi delivery are less efficient in an effort to improve the utility of RNAi in insect control

    Analysis of the Fabrication Conditions in Organic Field-Effect Transistors

    Polymer-based organic field-effect transistors have raised substantial awareness because they enable low-cost, solution processing techniques, and have the potential to be implemented in flexible, disposable organic electronic devices. The performance of these devices is highly dependent on the processing conditions, as well as the intrinsic properties of the polymer. Processing conditions play an important role in semiconductor film formation and device performance. These factors may provide an important link between structure and performance. In this study, an empirical analysis tool, Process Scout, was applied to assess processing factors such as polymer concentration and silicon modification. This sanctioned the creation of a realistic optimization model because common variance was not assumed and the mobility was capably analyzed in the real space. After the analysis of the processing conditions, it was evident that further study on the effect of humidity on performance must be conducted to account for the variance between similarly fabricated devices. The developed process may be applied to expand the study of other organic semiconductors. This process is the first step in creating a standard fabrication protocol, allowing organic field-effect transistors to prosper

    Female Sex Development and Reproductive Duct Formation Depend on Wnt4a in Zebrafish.

    In laboratory strains of zebrafish, sex determination occurs in the absence of a typical sex chromosome and it is not known what regulates the proportion of animals that develop as males or females. Many sex determination and gonad differentiation genes that act downstream of a sex chromosome are well conserved among vertebrates, but studies that test their contribution to this process have mostly been limited to mammalian models. In mammals, WNT4 is a signaling ligand that is essential for ovary and Müllerian duct development, where it antagonizes the male-promoting FGF9 signal. Wnt4 is well conserved across all vertebrates, but it is not known if Wnt4 plays a role in sex determination and/or the differentiation of sex organs in nonmammalian vertebrates. This question is especially interesting in teleosts, such as zebrafish, because they lack an Fgf9 ortholog. Here we show that wnt4a is the ortholog of mammalian Wnt4, and that wnt4b was present in the last common ancestor of humans and zebrafish, but was lost in mammals. We show that wnt4a loss-of-function mutants develop predominantly as males and conclude that wnt4a activity promotes female sex determination and/or differentiation in zebrafish. Additionally, both male and female wnt4a mutants are sterile due to defects in reproductive duct development. Together these results strongly argue that Wnt4a is a conserved regulator of female sex determination and reproductive duct development in mammalian and nonmammalian vertebrates

Become familiar with different approaches to teaching LR and challenges of learning and teaching about it. Reflect on the potential relevance and applications of LR in your own teaching context. Description: Lateral reading - the process of moving off of a webpage to see what others say about it - has become critical for effectively evaluating online sources. While lateral reading appears simple, teaching it reveals layers of complexity, which include deciding where to place one’s trust; how some voices are privileged while others are marginalized; and the impulse of many online readers to focus more on surface features of web sources over more critical questions and analysis. Presenters from three institutions will share about their varied experiences teaching lateral reading to undergraduate students: in a credit-bearing information literacy course that explored information ethics and social justice in relation to networked media systems; through a scaffolded online tutorial through which students practice source evaluation with lateral reading; and in flipped information literacy instruction sessions designed for first-year writing classes on investigating sources and finding better coverage for news stories

    MR diffusion changes in the perimeter of the lateral ventricles demonstrate periventricular injury in post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity

    OBJECTIVES: Injury to the preterm lateral ventricular perimeter (LVP), which contains the neural stem cells responsible for brain development, may contribute to the neurological sequelae of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus of prematurity (PHH). This study utilizes diffusion MRI (dMRI) to characterize the microstructural effects of IVH/PHH on the LVP and segmented frontal-occipital horn perimeters (FOHP). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of 56 full-term infants, 72 very preterm infants without brain injury (VPT), 17 VPT infants with high-grade IVH without hydrocephalus (HG-IVH), and 13 VPT infants with PHH who underwent dMRI at term equivalent. LVP and FOHP dMRI measures and ventricular size-dMRI correlations were assessed. RESULTS: In the LVP, PHH had consistently lower FA and higher MD and RD than FT and VPT (p\u3c.050). However, while PHH FA was lower, and PHH RD was higher than their respective HG-IVH measures (p\u3c.050), the MD and AD values did not differ. In the FOHP, PHH infants had lower FA and higher RD than FT and VPT (p\u3c.010), and a lower FA than the HG-IVH group (p\u3c.001). While the magnitude of AD in both the LVP and FOHP were consistently less in the PHH group on pairwise comparisons to the other groups, the differences were not significant (p\u3e.050). Ventricular size correlated negatively with FA, and positively with MD and RD (p\u3c.001) in both the LVP and FOHP. In the PHH group, FA was lower in the FOHP than in the LVP, which was contrary to the observed findings in the healthy infants (p\u3c.001). Nevertheless, there were no regional differences in AD, MD, and RD in the PHH group. CONCLUSION: HG-IVH and PHH results in aberrant LVP/FOHP microstructure, with prominent abnormalities among the PHH group, most notably in the FOHP. Larger ventricular size was associated with greater magnitude of abnormality. LVP/FOHP dMRI measures may provide valuable biomarkers for future studies directed at improving the management and neurological outcomes of IVH/PHH

    A qualitative exploration of perceptions and experiences of contraceptive use, abortion and post-abortion family planning services (PAFP) in three provinces in China

    Background: The INPAC project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of integrated post-abortion family planning (PAFP) services into existing hospital based abortion services in China. A qualitative study was conducted in three provinces to contribute to developing effective PAFP services through understanding influences on contraceptive use, experiences of abortion and existing PAFP, and their effect on future contraceptive practices from the perspective of users, in the context of social and institutional change. Methods: Twenty-nine in-depth interviews (IDIs) were undertaken with women who had experienced abortion between 1 and 6 months prior to interview, recruited from three urban and two rural facilities in each province. Thirteen IDIs were also conducted with male partners. Six focus group discussions (FGDs) were carried out with community members from different social groups, including unmarried and married women and men, urban residents and rural-to-urban migrants. Results: Social networks and norms are important in shaping attitudes and behaviour towards abortion and contraception. Widespread concerns were expressed about side-effects, reliability and effects on future fertility of some modern contraceptives. The combination of limited information and choices and a lack of person-centred counselling in PAFP with anxieties about side effects underlies the widespread use of unreliable methods. Gendered power relations significantly influence contraceptive (non) use, with several examples illustrating women's relative lack of power to decide on a method, particularly in the case of condoms. Although the availability of contraceptive information from respected providers can offer impetus for individual behaviour change, social distance from providers reduces opportunities for clients to discuss their difficulties regarding contraceptive use; particularly, but not exclusively for young, unmarried clients. Conclusions: Increased access to non-commercial, reliable information on contraceptive methods is needed. PAFP services must go beyond simple information provision to ensure that providers take a more personcentred approach, which considers the most appropriate method for individual clients and probes for the underlying influences on contraceptive (non) use. More sensitive reflection on gender norms and relationships is required during counselling and, where women choose this, efforts should be made to include their male partners. Specific attention to provider positionality and skills for counselling young, unmarried clients is needed

    Controlling Factors of Microplastic Riverine Flux and Implications for Reliable Monitoring Strategy

    Embargo until December 12, 2022A significant proportion of marine plastic debris and microplastics is assumed to be derived from river systems. In order to effectively manage plastic contamination of the marine environment, an accurate quantification of riverine flux of land-based plastics and microplastics is imperative. Rivers not only represent pathways to the ocean, but are also complex ecosystems that support many life processes and ecosystem services. Yet riverine microplastics research is still in its infancy, and many uncertainties still remain. Major barriers exist in two aspects. First, nonharmonized sampling methodologies make it problematic for compiling data across studies to better estimate riverine fluxes of microplastics globally; Second, the significant spatiotemporal variation of microplastics in rivers which was affected by the river characteristics, MPs properties, etc. also have important influence on the estimation of riverine MPs fluxes. In this study, we made a comprehensive review from the above two aspects based on published peer-reviewed studies and provide recommendations and suggestions for a reliable monitoring strategy of riverine MPs, which is beneficial to the further establish sampling methods for rivers in different geographical locations. Besides, methods for achieving a high level of comparability across studies in different geographical contexts are highlighted. Riverine microplastic flux monitoring is another important part of this manuscript. The influential factors and calculation methods of microplastic flux in rivers are also discussed in this paper.acceptedVersio
