    Improving the Message-ciphertext Rate of Lewko\u27s Fully Secure IBE Scheme

    In Eurocrypt 2012, Lewko presented a fully secure IBE scheme in the prime order setting based on the decisional linear assumption. We note that some random factor involved in the ciphertext can further be used to hide yet another message , and get a new fully secure IBE scheme with better message-ciphertext rate. Similar to Lewko\u27s scheme, we use dual pairing vector space in prime order bilinear groups to simulate the canceling and parameter hiding properties of composite order settings. The security of our scheme is based on the subspace assumption, which can be reduced to the decisional linear assumption. We employ the dual system encryption technique in our security proof

    Fruit quality assessment based on mineral elements and juice properties in nine citrus cultivars

    IntroductionCitrus fruit is considered a superfood due to its multiple nutritional functions and health benefits. Quantitative analysis of the numerous quality characteristics of citrus fruit is required to promote its sustainable production and industrial utilization. However, little information is available on the comprehensive quality assessment of various fruit quality indicators in different citrus cultivars.MethodsA total of nine different fresh citrus fruits containing seeds were collected as the experimental materials. The objectives of this study were: (i) to determine the morphological and juice properties of citrus fruits, (ii) to measure the mineral elements in the peel, pulp, and seeds, and (iii) to evaluate the fruit quality index (FQI) using the integrated quality index (IQI) and the Nemoro quality index (NQI) methods.ResultsThere were significant differences in fruit quality characteristics, including morphological, mineral, and juice quality, among the investigated citrus cultivars. The proportion of pulp biomass was the highest, followed by that of peel and seeds. N and Cu had the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively, among the measured elements across all citrus fruits, and the amounts of N, P, Mg, Cu, and Zn in seeds, K and Al in pulp, and Ca, Fe, and Mn in peel were the highest, dramatically affecting the accumulation of minerals in the whole fruit and their distribution in various fruit parts. Additionally, Ningmeng fruits had the highest vitamin C and titratable acidity (TA) but the lowest total soluble solids (TSS) and total phenolic (TP) contents, resulting in the lowest TSS/TA and pH values. In contrast, Jinju fruits had the highest TSS and TP contents. Based on the mineral element and juice quality parameters, principal component analysis showed that the citrus fruits were well separated into four groups, and the dendrogram also showed four clusters with different distances. The FQI range based on the IQI method (FQIIQI) and NQI method (FQINQI) was 0.382-0.590 and 0.106-0.245, respectively, and a positive relationship between FQIIQI and FQINQI was observed.ConclusionOur results highlight the great differences in mineral and juice characteristics among fruit parts, which mediated fruit quality. The strategy of fruit quality assessment using the FQI can be expanded for targeted utilization in the citrus industry

    Competitive Performance of Carbon “Quantum” Dots in Optical Bioimaging

    Carbon-based “quantum” dots or carbon dots are surface-functionalized small carbon nanoparticles. For bright fluorescence emissions, the carbon nanoparticles may be surface-doped with an inorganic salt and then the same organic functionalization. In this study, carbon dots without and with the ZnS doping were prepared, followed by gel-column fractionation to harvest dots of 40% and 60% in fluorescence quantum yields, respectively. These highly fluorescent carbon dots were evaluated for optical imaging in mice, from which bright fluorescence images were obtained. Of particular interest was the observed competitive performance of the carbon dots in vivo to that of the well-established CdSe/ZnS QDs. The results suggest that carbon dots may be further developed into a new class of high-performance yet nontoxic contrast agents for optical bioimaging

    Proteomic analysis of PBMCs: characterization of potential HIV-associated proteins

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) pandemic has continued unabated for nearly 30 years. To better understand the influence of virus on host cells, we performed the differential proteome research of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from HIV-positive patients and healthy controls.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>26 protein spots with more than 1.5-fold difference were detected in two dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) gels. 12 unique up-regulated and one down-regulated proteins were identified in HIV-positive patients compared with healthy donors. The mRNA expression of 10 genes was analyzed by real time RT-PCR. It shows that the mRNA expression of talin-1, vinculin and coronin-1C were up-regulated in HIV positive patients and consistent with protein expression. Western blotting analysis confirmed the induction of fragments of vinculin, talin-1 and filamin-A in pooled and most part of individual HIV-positive clinical samples. Bioinformatic analysis showed that a wide host protein network was disrupted in HIV-positive patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Together, this work provided useful information to facilitate further investigation of the underlying mechanism of HIV and host cell protein interactions, and discovered novel potential biomarkers such as fragment of vinculin, filamin-A and talin-1 for anti-HIV research.</p

    LAC: Practical Ring-LWE Based Public-Key Encryption with Byte-Level Modulus

    We propose an instantiation of public key encryption scheme based on the ring learning with error problem, where the modulus is at a byte level and the noise is at a bit level, achieving one of the most compact lattice based schemes in the literature. The main technical challenges are a) the decryption error rates increases and needs to be handled elegantly, and b) we cannot use the Number Theoretic Transform (NTT) technique to speed up the implementation. We overcome those limitations with some customized parameter sets and heavy error correction codes. We give a treatment of the concrete security of the proposed parameter set, with regards to the recent advance in lattice based cryptanalysis. We present an optimized implementation taking advantage of our byte level modulus and bit level noise. In addition, a byte level modulus allows for high parallelization and the bit level noise avoids the modulus reduction during multiplication. Our result shows that \LAC~is more compact than most of the existing (Ring-)LWE based solutions, while achieving a similar level of efficiency, compared with popular solutions in this domain, such as Kyber

    Perceived status towards COVID-19 mitigation measures among medical students in Malaysian Borneo

    Introduction: Mitigation measures are important in curbing COVID-19 infection. However, people’s adherence to the control measures is depending upon their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) towards the disease. This study aims to determine the KAP on COVID-19 and its associated factors among medical students in Malaysian Borneo during the period of the pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey of 248 medical students from University Malaysia Sabah was conducted from August to September 2020. The survey instrument was adapted from a previously validated questionnaire on COVID-19. Descriptive statistics and simple logistic regression were conducted. Results: The mean age of respondents was 22.0 (SD 1.4) years. Majority (65.7%, n= 163) were clinical students, female gender (70.6%, n= 175), and Bumiputera ethnic (46.8%, n= 116). 211 (85.1%), 191 (77.0%) and 163 (65.7%) of the respondents have good level of knowledge, positive attitude and good practice respectively. Conclusion: The medical students are updated with the current health issues especially on COVID-19. They are aware of the attributes of the disease and have concerns in taking good care of themselves. Further study needs to be implemented among the groups of non-medical student of the same institution to compare their KAP on COVID-19
