    Magnons and electromagnons in a spin-lattice-coupled frustrated magnet CuFeO2 as seen via inelastic neutron scattering

    We have investigated spin-wave excitations in a four-sublattice (4SL) magnetic ground state of a frustrated magnet CuFeO2, in which `electromagnon' (electric-field-active magnon) excitation has been discovered by recent terahertz time-domain spectroscopy [Seki et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 097207 (2010)]. In previous study, we have identified two spin-wave branches in the 4SL phase by means of inelastic neutron scattering measurements under applied uniaxial pressure. [T. Nakajima et al. J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 80 014714 (2011) ] In the present study, we have performed high-energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the 4SL phase, resolving fine structures of the lower-energy spin-wave branch near the zone center. Taking account of the spin-driven lattice distortions in the 4SL phase, we have developed a model Hamiltonian to describe the spin-wave excitations. The determined Hamiltonian parameters have successfully reproduced the spin-wave dispersion relations and intensity maps obtained in the inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The results of the spin-wave analysis have also revealed physical pictures of the magnon and electromagnon modes in the 4SL phase, suggesting that collinear and noncollinear characters of the two spin-wave modes are the keys to understand the dynamical coupling between the spins and electric dipole moments in this system.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Development of a glue-free bimorph mirror for use in vacuum chambers

    PZT (lead zirconate titanate)-glued bimorph deformable mirrors are widely used in hard X-ray regimes; however, they have not yet been used in soft X-ray regimes because they are less compatible for usage under high vacuum. In this study, we developed a glue-free bimorph deformable mirror, in which silver nano-particles were employed to bond PZT actuators to mirror substrates. Under an appropriate bonding condition, the bonding layer was confirmed to be uniform and the mirror's bending characteristics were demonstrated to be sufficiently stable; its gas emission rate was also shown to be acceptable.     BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The standard therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. However, long-term adherence remains at ~50% despite improvements in behavioural and educational interventions. Based on prior work, we explored whether regularity of breathing during wakefulness might be a physiologic predictor of CPAP adherence. METHODS: Of the 117 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with OSA and prescribed CPAP, 79 CPAP naïve patients were enrolled in this prospective study. During CPAP initiation, respiratory signals were collected using respiratory inductance plethysmography while wearing CPAP during wakefulness in a seated position. Breathing regularity was assessed by the coefficient of variation (CV) for breath-by-breath estimated tidal volume (VT ) and total duration of respiratory cycle (Ttot). In a derivation group (n = 36), we determined the cut-off CV value which predicted poor CPAP adherence at the first month of therapy, and verified the validity of this predetermined cut-off value in the remaining participants (validation group; n = 43). RESULTS: In the derivation group, the CV for estimated VT was significantly higher in patients with poor adherence than with good adherence (median (interquartile range): 44.2 (33.4-57.4) vs 26.0 (20.4-33.2), P 34.0 confirmed to be predicting poor CPAP adherence (sensitivity, 0.78; specificity, 0.83).     Magnetic Phase Diagrams with Possible Field-induced Antiferroquadrupolar Order in TbB2_2C2_2

    Magnetic phase diagrams of a tetragonal antiferromagnet TbB2_2C2_2 were clarified by temperature and field dependence of magnetization. It is noticeable that the N{\'e}el temperature in TbB2_2C2_2 is anomalously enhanced with magnetic fields, in particular the enhancement reaches 13.5 K for the {} direction at 10 T. The magnetization processes as well as the phase diagrams are well interpreted assuming that there appear field-induced antiferroquadrupolar ordered phases in TbB2_2C2_2. The phase diagrams of the AFQ compounds in RB2_2C2_2 are systematically understood in terms of the competition with AFQ and AFM interactions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX

    Although recent research showed that advanced glycation endproduct (AGE) and hydroquinone (HQ) are related to the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the mechanism how AGE and HQ induce or accelerate AMD remains elusive. In the present study, we examined the effects of AGE and HQ on changes of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell numbers and found that the viable cell numbers were markedly reduced by HQ by apoptosis and that AGE prevented the decreases of HQ-treated cell numbers by increased replicative DNA synthesis of RPE cells without changing apoptosis. Real-time RT-PCR revealed that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A mRNA was increased by HQ treatment and the addition of HQ+AGE resulted in a further increment. The increase of VEGF secretion was confirmed by ELISA, and inhibition of VEGF signaling by chemical inhibitors and small interfering RNA decreased the HQ+AGE-induced increases in RPE cell numbers. The deletion analysis demonstrated that −102 to −43 region was essential for the VEGF-A promoter activation. Site-directed mutaions of specificity protein 1 (SP1) binding sequences in the VEGF-A promoter and RNA interference of SP1 revealed that SP1 is an essential transcription factor for VEGF-A expression. These results indicate that HQ induces RPE cell apoptosis, leading to dry AMD, and suggest that AGE stimulation in addition to HQ enhances VEGF-A transcription via the AGE-receptor for AGE pathway in HQ-damaged cells. As a result, the secreted VEGF acts as an autocrine/paracrine growth factor for RPE and/or adjacent vascular cells, causing wet AMD.博士(医学)・甲第640号・平成27年11月27日Copyright © 2015 The Authors.     Changes in mRNA abundance of insulin-like growth factors in the brain and liver of a tropical damselfish, Chrysiptera cyanea, in relation to seasonal and food-manipulated reproduction

    Food availability can become a factor driving the reproductive activity of tropical fish, particularly when primary production within their habitats fluctuates with tropical monsoons. The present study examined the involvement of insulin-like growth factors (IGF) in controlling the reproduction of the sapphire devil Chrysiptera cyanea, a reef-associated damselfish that is capable of manipulating its reproductive activity based on food availability. We cloned and characterized the cDNAs of igf1 and igf2 and determined their transcript levels in relation to seasonal and food-manipulated reproduction. The partial cDNAs of sapphire devil igf1 and igf2 had open reading frames (ORFs) composed of 600 bp (155 amino acid residue) and 636 bp (211 aa), respectively. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that IGF1 and IGF2 of the sapphire devil were clustered into those of teleosts. The gonadosomatic index increased from March to June. Vitellogenic oocytes and ovulatory follicles were observed in ovaries from May to June, which suggests that the spawning season lasts for at least 2 months. The hepatosomatic index, but not the condition factor, increased in March and June. The transcript levels of igf1 in the brain, but not in the liver, increased in April, June (vitellogenesis) and July (post vitellogenesis). Ovarian activity during the spawning season was maintained by high food supply (HH) for 30 days, although it was suppressed in the food-restriction treatment (LL) and restored in the re-feeding treatment (LH). The transcript levels of igfs in the brain, but not in the liver, in LH were lower than those in HH and LL. Moreover, immersing fish in seawater containing estradiol-17β suppressed transcript levels of igfs in the liver, but not in the brain. We conclude that reproductive activity during the spawning season is influenced by nutritive conditions and that crosstalk exists between the reproductive and growth network in the neural and peripheral tissues, thus controlling the reproductive activity of this species

    Hard X-ray nanofocusing using adaptive focusing optics based on piezoelectric deformable mirrors

    An adaptive Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror focusing optics based on piezoelectric deformable mirrors was constructed at SPring-8 and its focusing performance characteristics were demonstrated. By adjusting the voltages applied to the deformable mirrors, the shape errors (compared to a target elliptical shape) were finely corrected on the basis of the mirror shape determined using the pencil-beam method, which is a type of at-wavelength figure metrology in the X-ray region. The mirror shapes were controlled with a peak-to-valley height accuracy of 2.5 nm.
