    Insights into Galaxy Morphology and Star Formation: Unveiling Filamentary Structures around an Extreme Overdensity at z1.5z \sim 1.5 Traced by [OII] Emitters

    We explore the morphological features and star formation activities of [OII] emitters in the COSMOS UltraDeep field at z1.5z \sim 1.5 using JWST NIRCam data from the COSMOS-Web survey and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. We also report the discovery of large filamentary structures traced by [OII] emitters, surrounding an extremely overdense core with a galaxy number density 11×\sim11\times higher than the field average. These structures span over 50 cMpc, underscoring their large scale in the cosmic web at this epoch. After matching the stellar mass distributions, the core galaxies show a higher frequency of disturbances (50%\% ± \pm 9%\%) than those in outskirts (41%\% ± \pm 9%\%) and the field (21%\% ± \pm 5%\%), indicative of more frequent mergers and interactions in the innermost 1.5\lesssim1.5 arcmin region. Additionally, we observe that specific star formation rates are elevated in denser environments. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test comparing the distribution of specific star formation rates of core and field galaxies yields a p\textit{p}-value of 0.02, suggesting an enhancement of star-formation activity driven by the dense environment. Our findings underscore the environmental impact on galaxy evolution during a pivotal cosmic epoch and set the stage for further investigation with the increasing larger data from upcoming surveys.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter

    We investigated magnetic properties of the L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreactor method by means of Moessbauer spectroscopy from the microscopic point of view. Almost all of the nanoparticles were revealed to have nearly the same Moessbauer hyperfine parameters as those of the bulk L10-FePt alloy, indicating that they have well-defined L10 structure equivalent to the bulk state in spite of their small size of 6.5 nm.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    Relationship between GnRH-induced LH increase profiles

    This study aimed to investigate the relationship between increases in the luteinizing hormone (LH) profiles in the serum and vaginal mucus of cows induced by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Samples for LH determination were collected from Japanese Black beef cows during estrus, which was induced with a controlled internal progesterone-releasing device and the administration of cloprostenol immediately before GnRH administration and every 30 min from the start of GnRH administration until 6.5 h. The peak serum LH concentration was clearly identified at 2.5 h post-GnRH administration, with serum concentrations returning to near-pre-GnRH-administration values after 6.5 h, whereas the peak vaginal mucus LH concentration was identified 4.5 h after GnRH administration. These results indicate that the LH secretion peak in vaginal mucus appeared about 2 h after peak LH secretion in the serum

    Alternative intestinal phosphate transporter in CKD

    Background: Phosphate is absorbed in the small intestine via passive flow and active transport.NaPi-IIb, a type II sodium-dependent phosphate transporter, is considered to mediate active phosphate transport in rodents. To study the regulation of intestinal phosphate transport in chronic kidney disease (CKD), we analyzed the expression levels of NaPi-IIb, pituitary-specific transcription factor 1 (PiT-1) and PiT-2 and the kinetics of intestinal phosphate transport using two CKD models. Methods: CKD was induced in rats via adenine orThy1 anti-body injection. Phosphate uptake by intestinal brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) and the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of NaPi-IIb, PiT-1 and PiT-2 were analyzed. The protein expression level of NaPi-IIb was measured by mass spectrometry (e.g. liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry). Results: In normal rats, phosphate uptake into BBMV consisted of a single saturable component and its Michaelis constant (Km) was comparable to that of NaPi-IIb. The maximum velocity (Vmax) correlated with mRNA and protein levels of NaPi-IIb. In the CKD models, intestinal phosphate uptake consisted of two saturable components. The Vmax of the higher-affinity transport, which is thought to be responsible for NaPi-IIb, significantly decreased and the decrease correlated with reduced NaPi-IIb expression. The Km of the lower-affinity transport was comparable to that of PiT-1 and -2. PiT-1 mRNA expression was much higher than that of PiT-2, suggesting that PiT-1 was mostly responsible for phosphate transport. Conclusions: This study suggests that the contribution of NaPi-IIb to intestinal phosphate absorption dramatically decreases in rats with CKD and that a low-affinity alternative to NaPi-IIb, in particular PiT-1, is upregulated in a compensatory manner in CKD

    Effect of an Oral Adsorbent, AST-120, on Dialysis Initiation and Survival in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

    The oral adsorbent AST-120 has the potential to delay dialysis initiation and improve survival of patients on dialysis. We evaluated the effect of AST-120 on dialysis initiation and its potential to improve survival in patients with chronic kidney disease. The present retrospective pair-matched study included 560 patients, grouped according to whether or not they received AST-120 before dialysis (AST-120 and non-AST-120 groups). The cumulative dialysis initiation free rate and survival rate were compared by the Kaplan-Meier method. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the impact of AST-120 on dialysis initiation. Our results showed significant differences in the 12- and 24-month dialysis initiation free rate (P < 0.001), although no significant difference was observed in the survival rate between the two groups. In conclusion, AST-120 delays dialysis initiation in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients but has no effect on survival. AST-120 is an effective therapy for delaying the progression of CKD

    Environmental impact on star-forming galaxies in a z0.9z \sim 0.9 cluster during course of galaxy accretion

    Galaxies change their properties as they assemble into clusters. In order to understand the physics behind that, we need to go back in time and observe directly what is occurring in galaxies as they fall into a cluster. We have conducted a narrow-band and JJ-band imaging survey on a cluster CL1604-D at z=0.923z=0.923 using a new infrared instrument SWIMS installed at the Subaru Telescope. The narrow-band filter, NB1261, matches to Hα\alpha emission from the cluster at z=0.923z=0.923. Combined with a wide range of existing data from various surveys, we have investigated galaxy properties in and around this cluster in great detail. We have identified 27 Hα\alpha emitters associated with the cluster. They have significant overlap with MIPS 24μ\mum sources and are located exclusively in the star forming regime on the rest-frame UVJUVJ diagram. We have identified two groups of galaxies near the cluster in the 2D spatial distribution and the phase-space diagram, which are likely to be in-falling to the cluster main body. We have compared various physical properties of star forming galaxies, such as specific star formation rates (burstiness) and morphologies (merger) as a function of environment; cluster center, older group, younger group, and the field. As a result, a global picture has emerged on how the galaxy properties are altered as they assemble into a denser region. This includes the occurrence of mergers, enhancement of star formation activity, excursion to the dusty starburst phase, and eventual quenching to a passive phase.Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures.
