Metastability of R-Charged Black Holes
The global stability of R-charged AdS black holes in a grand canonical
ensemble is examined by eliminating the constraints from the action, but
without solving the equations of motion, thereby constructing the reduced
action of the system. The metastability of the system is found to set in at a
critical value of the chemical potential which is conjugate to the R-charge.
The relation among the small black hole, large black hole and the instability
is discussed. The result is consistent with the metastability found in the
AdS/CFT-conjectured dual field theory. The "renormalized" temperature of AdS
black holes, which has been rather ad hoc, is suggested to be the boundary
temperature in the sense of AdS/CFT correspondence. As a byproduct of the
analysis, we find a more general solution of the theory and its properties are
briefly discussed.Comment: 36 pages, 7 figures, v2 is the published version. the exposition is

Effect of the spin-orbit interaction and the electron phonon coupling on the electronic state in a silicon vacancy
The electronic state around a single vacancy in silicon crystal is
investigated by using the Green's function approach. The triply degenerate
charge states are found to be widely extended and account for extremely large
elastic softening at low temperature as observed in recent ultrasonic
experiments. When we include the LS coupling on each Si
atom, the 6-fold spin-orbital degeneracy for the state with the valence
+1 and spin 1/2 splits into doublet groundstates and
quartet excited states with a reduced excited energy of . We also consider the effect of couplings between electrons and
Jahn-Teller phonons in the dangling bonds within the second order perturbation
and find that the groundstate becomes quartet which is responsible
for the magnetic-field suppression of the softening in B-doped silicon.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Time-reversible Dynamical Systems for Turbulence
Dynamical Ensemble Equivalence between hydrodynamic dissipative equations and
suitable time-reversible dynamical systems has been investigated in a class of
dynamical systems for turbulence. The reversible dynamics is obtained from the
original dissipative equations by imposing a global constraint. We find that,
by increasing the input energy, the system changes from an equilibrium state to
a non-equilibrium stationary state in which an energy cascade, with the same
statistical properties of the original system, is clearly detected.Comment: 16 pages Latex, 4 PS figures, on press on J. Phy
Spin-stripe density varies linearly with hole content in single-layer Bi2201 cuprate
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the
single-layer cuprate Bi2+xSr2-xCuO6+y (Bi2201) with x=0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, a
doping range that spans the spin-glass (SG) to superconducting (SC) phase
boundary. The doping evolution of low energy spin fluctuations was found to be
characterized by a change of incommensurate modulation wave vector from the
tetragonal [110] to [100]/[010] directions, while maintaining a linear relation
between the incommensurability and the hole concentration, delta p. In the SC
regime, the spectral weight is strongly suppressed below 4 meV. Similarities
and differences in the spin correlations between Bi2201 and the prototypical
single-layer system La2-xSrxCuO4 are discussed.Comment: 5 page,4 figure
B Physics on the Lattice: Present and Future
Recent experimental measurements and lattice QCD calculations are now
reaching the precision (and accuracy) needed to over-constrain the CKM
parameters and . In this brief review, I discuss the
current status of lattice QCD calculations needed to connect the experimental
measurements of meson properties to quark flavor-changing parameters.
Special attention is given to , which is becoming a competitive
way to determine , and to mixings, which now include
reliable extrapolation to the physical light quark mass. The combination of the
recent measurement of the mass difference and current lattice
calculations dramatically reduces the uncertainty in . I present an
outlook for reducing dominant lattice QCD uncertainties entering CKM fits, and
I remark on lattice calculations for other decay channels.Comment: Invited brief review for Mod. Phys. Lett. A. 15 pages. v2: typos

Surface tension in a compressible liquid-drop model: Effects on nuclear density and neutron skin thickness
We examine whether or not the surface tension acts to increase the nucleon
density in the nuclear interior within a compressible liquid-drop model. We
find that it depends on the density dependence of the surface tension, which
may in turn be deduced from the neutron skin thickness of stable nuclei.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Physical Review
Some Insights into the Method of Center Projection
We present several new results which pertain to the successes of center
projection in maximal center gauge (MCG). In particular, we show why any center
vortex, inserted "by hand" into a thermalized lattice configuration, will be
among the set of vortices found by the center projection procedure. We show
that this "vortex-finding property" is lost when gauge-field configurations are
fixed to Landau gauge prior to the maximal center gauge fixing; this fact
accounts for the loss of center dominance in the corresponding projected
configurations. Variants of maximal center (adjoint Landau) gauge are proposed
which correctly identify relevant center vortices.Comment: LATTICE99(confine), 3 pages, 3 figure
