    Functional-dialectical analysis of the evolution of the implementation of the law of industrial communities in the reformed private sector of the Peruvian industry

    Peru has a pluralistic economy, which means the existence of multiple and competing organizations characterized by different forms of property. An industrial enterprise can participate in any of them; social, state, reformed private and fully private. This thesis is about the reformed private sector which provides for worker participation in profits, management and ownership of the company. The workers will eventually own 50 per cent of the stock holders equity of the company at which they work. The industrial community is the institution created by the government in all companies with five or more workers or with a net profit beyond a certain amount. This institution is selfmanaged and it is placed in a private company in order to bring about comanagement . The author hypothesizes that due to group pressures there has been an evolution in the implementation of the law of industrial communities although the text of the law has remained unchanged. She demonstrates it through a "functional-dialectical" analysis at three moments in time where the three great actors, identified as the government, the workers and the original owners of capital, come together for a moment of balance. This balance is every time lost because of the pressures of one of the groups involved. The methodology is that of functional analysis but the enphasis is on the dysfunctions of the system, from there the word "dialectical",those occurrences that make for change and evolution. This study is approached from three perspectives in order to give each of the three groups a fair share; their understanding of the industrial community and its implementation in each case responds to each group'different socialization, goals and commitments. By the same token the conclusions are of three kinds depending on which vantage point we take. They are not contradictory with each other, only partial.     Modeling Iron and Light Controls on the Summer \u3ci\u3ePhaeocystis antarctica\u3c/i\u3e Bloom in the Amundsen Sea Polynya

    Of all the Antarctic coastal polynyas, the Amundsen Sea Polynya is the most productive per unit area. Observations from the 2010-2011 Amundsen Sea Polynya International Research Expedition (ASPIRE) revealed that both light and iron can limit the growth of phytoplankton (Phaeocystis antarctica), but how these controls manifest over the bloom season is poorly understood, especially with respect to their climate sensitivity. Using a 1-D biogeochemical model, we examine the influence of light and iron limitation on the phytoplankton bloom and vertical carbon flux at 12 stations representing different bloom stages within the polynya. Model parameters are determined by Bayesian optimization and assimilation of ASPIRE observations. The model-data fit is most sensitive to phytoplankton physiological parameters, which among all model parameters are best constrained by the optimization. We find that the 1-D model captures the basic elements of the bloom observed during ASPIRE, despite some discrepancies between modeled and observed dissolved iron distributions. With this model, we explore the way iron availability, in combination with light availability, controlled the rise, peak, and decline of the bloom at the 12 stations. Modeled light limitation by self-shading is very strong, but iron is drawn down as the bloom rises, becoming limiting in combination with light as the bloom declines. These model results mechanistically confirm the importance of climate-sensitive controls like stratification and meltwater on phytoplankton bloom development and carbon export in this region

    Glucose Reaction with Fumonisin B1 Partially Reduces Its Toxicity in Swine

    Acute and subacute intraperitoneal doses of fumonisin B1 (FB1) were administered to test the efficacy of the FB1-glucose reaction products in detoxifying FB1 in swine. In the acute study at 11 µmol of FB1/kg of body weight, five of six pigs administered FB1 and four of six pigs administered FB1- glucose died from acute pulmonary edema. Analysis of weight gain, serum aspartate aminotransferase and γ-glutamyltransferase, total cholesterol, and pathological evaluation did not provide evidence of protection against FB1 toxicity by the FB1-glucose reaction products. In the subacute study at 5.5 µmol of FB1/kg of body weight, one pig administered FB1 died from liver damage. Analysis of serum aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and total bilirubin showed protection against FB1 toxicity by the FB1-glucose reaction products. The levels of sphinganine and sphinganine/sphingosine ratios in serum and liver as well as pathologic findings provided definitive evidence of protection against the FB1 toxic effects by this detoxification procedure (p \u3c 0.05)

    Fumonisin B-Glucose Reaction Products Are Less Toxic When Fed to Swine

    The effects of fumonisin B-glucose reaction products in swine diets was examined. Pigs were fed diets containing 528 µmol of total fumonisin B/kg (FB), 528 µmol of total FB-glucose adducts/kg (FB-G, 122 µmol of unreacted FB/kg), or 0 µmol of total FB/kg for 15 days to test the efficacy of the FB-G reaction products in detoxifying FB. Weight gain in FB pigs was lower than in FB-G or controls, which was correlated with feed intake reduction in FB pigs. Serum aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and total bilirubin in FB pigs were higher than in FB-G or control pigs. Serum sphinganine/shingosine ratios in FB pigs were higher than in FB-G or control pigs. Microscopic examination of tissues from FB pigs showed generalized liver necrosis and apoptosis with marked cellular pleomorphism and disorganized hepatic cords. The liver and kidneys in the FB-G group appeared to be normal. Tissues of controls were free of lesions. Results suggest that dietary FB-G products are less toxic to swine and may provide an detoxification approach in instances of widespread FB grain contamination (p \u3c 0.05)
