Dependence of the 0.5(2e2/h) conductance plateau on the aspect ratio of InAs quantum point contacts with in-plane side gates

The observation of a 0.5 conductance plateau in asymmetrically biased quantum point contacts with in-plane side gates has been attributed to the onset of spin-polarized current through these structures. For InAs quantum point contacts with the same width but longer channel length, there is roughly a fourfold increase in the range of common sweep voltage applied to the side gates over which the 0.5 conductance plateau is observed when the QPC aspect ratio (ratio of length over width of the narrow portion of the structure) is increased by a factor 3. Non-equilibrium Green s function simulations indicate that the increase in the size of the 0.5 conductance plateau is due to an increased importance, over a larger range of common sweep voltage, of the effects of electron-electron interactions in QPC devices with larger aspect ratio. The use of asymmetrically biased QPCs with in-plane side gates and large aspect ratio could therefore pave the way to build robust spin injectors and detectors for the successful implementation of spin field effect transistorsComment: 30 pages, 9 figure

Comparison of organic and conventional managements on yields, nutrients and weeds in a corn-cabbage rotation

Conventional soil management systems (SMS) use synthetic inputs to maximize crop productivity, which leads to environmental degradation. Organic SMS is an alternative that is claimed to prevent or mitigate such negative environmental impacts. Vegetable production systems rely on frequent tillage to prepare beds and manage weeds, and are also characterized by little crop residue input. The use of crop residues and organic fertilizers may counteract the negative impacts of intensive vegetable production. To test this hypothesis, we evaluated the effect of sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. rugosa) residue incorporation in a corn–cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) rotation on crop yields, nutrient uptake, weed biomass and soil nutrients for organic and conventional SMS in two contrasting soil types (a Chromosol and a Vertosol). Yields of corn and cabbage under the organic SMS were not lower than the conventional SMS, possibly due to the equivalent N, P and K nutrients applied. Macro-nutrient uptake between the organic and conventional SMS did not differ for cabbage heads. Corn residue incorporation reduced the average in-crop weed biomass in cabbage crops by 22% in 2010 and by 47% in 2011. Corn residue-induced inhibitions on weed biomass may be exploited as a supplementary tool to mechanical weed control for the organic SMS, potentially reducing the negative impacts of cultivation on soil organic carbon. Residue incorporation and the organic SMS increased the average total soil N by 7 and 4% compared with the treatments without residue and the conventional SMS, respectively, indicating the longer-term fertility gains of these treatments. Exchangeable K, but not Colwell P, in the soil was significantly increased by residue incorporation. The clayey Vertosol conserved higher levels of nutrients than the sandy Chromosol. Yields under organic SMS can match that of conventional SMS. Residue incorporation in soil improved soil nutrients and reduced weed biomass

Photonic crystal ring resonator-based four-channel dense wavelength division multiplexing demultiplexer on silicon on insulator platform: design and analysis

A micro/nanofabrication feasible compact photonic crystal (PC) ring-resonator-based channel drop filter has been designed and analyzed for operation in C and L bands of communication window. The four-channel demultiplexer consists of ring resonators of holes in two-dimensional PC slab. The proposed assembly design of dense wavelength division multiplexing setup is shown to achieve optimal quality factor, without altering the lattice parameters or resonator size or inclusion of scattering holes. Transmission characteristics are analyzed using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation approach. The radiation loss of the ring resonator was minimized by forced cancelation of radiation fields by fine-tuning the air holes inside the ring resonator. An average cross talk of -34 dB has been achieved between the adjacent channels maintaining an average quality factor of 5000. Demultiplexing is achieved by engineering only the air holes inside the ring, which makes it a simple and tolerant design from the fabrication perspective. Also, the device footprint of 500 mu m(2) on silicon on insulator platform makes it easy to fabricate the device using e-beam lithography technique. Photonic Crystal Ring Resonator: A Promising Device for a Multitude Applications

    No full text
In this paper a 2D Photonic Crystal array in SOI platform having hexagonal periodicity with a ring defect incorporated along with two bus waveguides is conceptualized and realized for various applications of optical communication, sensing etc. The ring structure filters out a resonant wavelength from the spectrum carried to it through the line defect where the resonated peak is determined by the effective ring radius. The hexagonal architecture enables more coupling length than an ideal ring structure which helps in better intensity accumulation. The resonant peak exhibited at 1554nm in simulation, which is observed in the optical characterization at 1543nm. This is attributed to the fabrication tolerance
