Purpose. To investigate the clinical features, surgical outcomes, and prognostic factors of combined rhegmatogenous and tractional detachment (combined RD) in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in recent years. Methods. Medical records of PDR and combined RD treated with vitrectomy from 2008 to 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. Results. A total of 57 eyes from 49 patients were included. Nine eyes had received panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) and 7 eyes had intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) within 3 months before RD developed. Thirty-eight eyes (66.7%) had ≧3 sites of broad adhesion of fibrovascular proliferation (FVP). Thirty-three eyes (57.9%) showed active FVP. Thirty-four eyes (59.6%) had extent of RD involving 3 or 4 quadrants. The primary reattachment rate was 93.0%, and the final visual acuity (VA) improved by more than 3 lines in 80.7% of eyes. Neovascular glaucoma occurred in 4 eyes postoperatively. Poor preoperative VA, severe vitreoretinal adhesion, and broad extent of RD had significant correlation with poor visual outcomes. Conclusion. PRP or IVB might play a role in provoking combined RD. The anatomical and functional success rates of surgery were high. Poor preoperative VA and severe proliferations predicted poor visual outcomes

    Get PDF
This paper presents an integrated system in which a knowledge-based decision support system (DSS) for selecting planning and design (P&D) tenders in public building construction. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is used to determine the weightings for evaluation criteria among decision makers and Fuzzy Multiple Criteria Decision Making (FMCDM) is dealt with the subjectivity and vagueness in the tender selection process. A case study consisting of nine alternatives, solicited from a public works agency in Taiwan, illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach and developed system

Clinical Implications of High MET Gene Dosage in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients without Previous Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment

Introduction:Recently, two studies revealed that MET amplification was associated with secondary epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. But it remains uncertain whether MET amplification could be related to primary TKI resistance in NSCLC because of limited data.Materials and Methods:MET gene dosage of the tumor tissues from 208 NSCLC patients was investigated by real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and compared with molecular and clinical features, including EGFR mutations, KRAS mutations, EGFR gene copy numbers, and patient survivals. Three copies were used as the cutoff. Among them, 25 patients were also evaluable for EGFR TKI responsiveness. Results:The proportion of high MET gene dosage was 10.58% (22/208) with higher incidence in squamous cell carcinoma (11.86%) and smokers (16.18%), although the differences with adenocarcinoma and nonsmokers were nonsignificant. Coexisting EGFR mutations were identified, and the incidence (8.54%) was similar to wild type (12.0%). High MET gene dosage was significantly associated with higher tumor stage (stage I + II versus stage III + IV; p = 0.0254) and prior chemotherapy for stage III + IV adenocarcinoma patients (35.71% versus 7.41%; p = 0.0145) but not correlated with primary TKI resistance. Among the 155 surgically resectable patients (stage I to IIIA), high MET gene dosage was significantly associated with shorter median survival (21.0 months versus 47.1 months; p = 0.042) by univariate analysis. Conclusions:High MET gene dosage was not related to primary TKI resistance and the incidence was increased after chemotherapy, suggesting high MET gene dosage may also be related to chemotherapy resistance

Effect of Catalyst Morphology on the Quality of CVD Grown Graphene

The strong interest in graphene has motivated large effort in the scalable production of high-quality material. The potential of chemical vapor deposition on Cu foil to produce such graphene is impeded by lacking understanding of the relation between catalyst properties and graphene performance. We here present a systematic analysis of the catalyst morphology and its effect on electrical properties of graphene. We find that nanometer sized particles increase the density of bilayer regions but have no significant effect on carrier transport. Long wavelength roughness (waviness), on the other hand, generates defective graphitic regions that deteriorate carrier mobility. These findings shed light on the graphene formation process on Cu substrates and open a route to improve graphene quality for electronics applications

Low Cost Seismic Network Practical Applications for Producing Quick Shaking Maps in Taiwan

Two major earthquakes of ML greater than 6.0 occurred in Taiwan in the first half of 2013. The vibrant shaking brought landslides, falling rocks and casualties. This paper presents a seismic network developed by National Taiwan University (NTU) with 401 Micro-Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) accelerators. The network recorded high quality strong motion signals from the two events and produced delicate shaking maps within one minute after the earthquake occurrence. The high shaking regions of the intensity map produced by the NTU system suggest damage and casualty locations. Equipped with a dense array of MEMS accelerometers, the NTU system is able to accommodate 10% signals loss from part of the seismic stations and maintain its normal functions for producing shaking maps. The system also has the potential to identify the rupture direction which is one of the key indices used to estimate possible damage. The low cost MEMS accelerator array shows its potential in real-time earthquake shaking map generation and damage avoidance

Prognostic Implications of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor and KRAS Gene Mutations and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Gene Copy Numbers in Patients with Surgically Resectable Non-small Cell Lung Cancer in Taiwan

IntroductionThe prognostic role of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in patients with surgically resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) without EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment has not been well established, because the reports are still few.Materials and MethodsWe analyzed the survival data of 164 patients with surgically resectable (stages I to IIIA) NSCLC of two year groups (1996–1998 and 2002–2004), and compared with EGFR mutations, KRAS mutations, and EGFR gene copy numbers.ResultsComparing the survival of wild-type patients and patients having L858R mutations or exon 19 deletion, the median survival was much longer for patient with EGFR mutations (54.7 months) than wild type (34.9 months). The difference was not statistically significant by univariate analysis (p = 0.1981) but had borderline significance by multivariate analyses (p = 0.0506). In addition, the 3-year survival rates of patients with EGFR mutations were also significantly higher than wild type (p = 0.0232). After exclusion of 18 patients treated by EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor for tumor recurrence, the trends were still the same. Patients with KRAS mutations had shorter median survival (21 months) than wild type (44.4 months). Patients with EGFR polysomy (≧copies) also had longer median survival (56.2 months) than wild type (53.4 months). But the survival differences of these two genetic markers were all not significant statistically.ConclusionIt is intriguing that patients with NSCLC with EGFR mutations had better survival than wild type. Such a tumor biology may confound the survival data in a study without the stratification by EGFR mutation

Crystallinity Improvement of ZnO Thin Film on Different Buffer Layers Grown by MBE

    Get PDF
The material and optical properties of ZnO thin film samples grown on different buffer layers on sapphire substrates through a two-step temperature variation growth by molecular beam epitaxy were investigated. The thin buffer layer between the ZnO layer and the sapphire substrate decreased the lattice mismatch to achieve higher quality ZnO thin film growth. A GaN buffer layer slightly increased the quality of the ZnO thin film, but the threading dislocations still stretched along the c-axis of the GaN layer. The use of MgO as the buffer layer decreased the surface roughness of the ZnO thin film by 58.8% due to the suppression of surface cracks through strain transfer of the sample. From deep level emission and rocking curve measurements it was found that the threading dislocations play a more important role than oxygen vacancies for high-quality ZnO thin film growth
