    Quantum speed limit of a single atom in a squeezed optical cavity mode

    We theoretically study the quantum speed limit of a single atom trapped in a Fabry-Perot microresonator. The cavity mode will be squeezed when a driving laser is applied to the second-order nonlinear medium, and the effective Hamiltonian can be obtained under the Bogoliubov squeezing transformation. The analytical expression of evolved atom state can be obtained by using the non-Hermitian Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the initial excited state, and the quantum speed limit time coincides very well for both the analytical expression and the master equation method. From the perspective of quantum speed limit, it is more conducive to accelerate the evolution of the quantum state for the large detuning, strong driving and coupling strength. For the initial superposition state case, the form of initial state has more influence on the evolution speed. The quantum speed limit time is not only dependent on the system parameters but also determined by the initial state

    Comprehensive analysis of ceRNA network composed of circRNA, miRNA, and mRNA in septic acute kidney injury patients based on RNA-seq

    Background: Sepsis is a complex, life-threatening clinical syndrome that can cause other related diseases, such as acute kidney injury (AKI). Circular RNA (circRNA) is a type of non-coding RNA with a diverse range of functions, and it plays essential roles in miRNA sponge. CircRNA plays a huge part in the development of various diseases. CircRNA and the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network are unknown factors in the onset and progression of septic AKI (SAKI). This study aimed to clarify the complex circRNA-associated regulatory mechanism of circRNAs in SAKI.Methods: We collected 40 samples of whole blood of adults, including 20 cases of SAKI and 20 cases of healthy controls. Moreover, five cases were each analyzed by RNA sequencing, and we identified differentially expressed circRNA, miRNA, and mRNA (DEcircRNAs, DEmiRNAs, and DEmRNAs, respectively). All samples were from SAKI patients with intraperitoneal infection.Results: As a result, we screened out 236 DEcircRNAs, 105 DEmiRNAs, and 4065 DEmRNAs. Then, we constructed two co-expression networks based on RNA–RNA interaction, including circRNA–miRNA and miRNA–mRNA co-expression networks. We finally created a circRNA–miRNA–mRNA regulation network by combining the two co-expression networks. Functional and pathway analyses indicated that DEmRNAs in ceRNA were mostly concentrated in T cell activation, neutrophils and their responses, and cytokines. The protein–protein interaction network was established to screen out the key genes participating in the regulatory network of SAKI. The hub genes identified as the top 10 nodes included the following: ZNF727, MDFIC, IFITM2, FOXD4L6, CIITA, KCNE1B, BAGE2, PPIAL4A, USP17L7, and PRSS2.Conclusion: To our knowledge, this research is the first study to describe changes in the expression profiles of circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs in patients with SAKI. These findings provide a new treatment target for SAKI treatment and novel ideas for its pathogenesis

    Sustained oxygenation accelerates diabetic wound healing by promoting epithelialization and angiogenesis and decreasing inflammation

    Nonhealing diabetic wounds are common complications for diabetic patients. Because chronic hypoxia prominently delays wound healing, sustained oxygenation to alleviate hypoxia is hypothesized to promote diabetic wound healing. However, sustained oxygenation cannot be achieved by current clinical approaches, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Here, we present a sustained oxygenation system consisting of oxygen-release microspheres and a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging hydrogel. The hydrogel captures the naturally elevated ROS in diabetic wounds, which may be further elevated by the oxygen released from the administered microspheres. The sustained release of oxygen augmented the survival and migration of keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, promoted angiogenic growth factor expression and angiogenesis in diabetic wounds, and decreased the proinflammatory cytokine expression. These effects significantly increased the wound closure rate. Our findings demonstrate that sustained oxygenation alone, without using drugs, can heal diabetic wounds

    Broad Inhibition Sharpens Orientation Selectivity by Expanding Input Dynamic Range in Mouse Simple Cells

    SummaryOrientation selectivity (OS) is an emergent property in the primary visual cortex (V1). How OS arises from synaptic circuits remains unsolved. Here, in vivo whole-cell recordings in the mouse V1 revealed that simple cells received broadly tuned excitation and even more broadly tuned inhibition. Excitation and inhibition shared a similar orientation preference and temporally overlapped substantially. Neuron modeling and dynamic-clamp recording further revealed that excitatory inputs alone would result in membrane potential responses with significantly attenuated selectivity, due to a saturating input-output function of the membrane filtering. Inhibition ameliorated the attenuation of excitatory selectivity by expanding the input dynamic range and caused additional sharpening of output responses beyond unselectively suppressing responses at all orientations. This “blur-sharpening” effect allows selectivity conveyed by excitatory inputs to be better expressed, which may be a general mechanism underlying the generation of feature-selective responses in the face of strong excitatory inputs that are weakly biased

    The role of laparoscopic surgery in the surgical management of recurrent liver malignancies: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficiency of laparoscopic surgery in treating recurrent liver tumors vs. conventional open surgery.MethodsDatabase searching was conducted in PubMed, the Cochrane Library and EMBASE. Rev Man 5.3 software and Stata 13.0 software were applied in statistical analyses.ResultsA total of fourteen studies were finally included with 1,284 patients receiving LRH and 2,254 with ORH. LRH was associated with less intraoperative hemorrhage, a higher R0 resection rate, a lower incidence of Pringle Maneuver, a lower incidence of postoperative morbidities, a better overall survival and an enhanced postoperative recovery vs. ORH. Patients receiving LRH shared similar operative time, tumor number and disease-free survival as those with ORH. However, tumor size was relatively larger in patients receiving ORH and major hepatectomy, anatomic hepatectomy were rarely performed in patients with LRH. Additional analyses between LRH and laparoscopic primary hepatectomy revealed less intraoperative blood loss in patients with LRH.ConclusionLRH is safe and feasible with more favorable peri-operative outcomes and faster postoperative recovery. However, it is only applicable for some highly-selected cases not requiring complex surgical procedures. Future larger well-designed studies are expected for further validation

    Comparison of the clinical features and long-term prognosis of gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma versus gallbladder adenocarcinoma: A propensity score-matched analysis

    Gallbladder neuroendocrine carcinoma (GBNEC) is rare and characterized by a low degree of tumor differentiation. The clinical features of GBNEC versus gallbladder adenocarcinoma (GBADC) remain a subject of debate. A total of 201 GBADC and 36 GBNEC cases that underwent surgery resection between January 2010 and 2022 at the Department of Biliary Surgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University were included. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was performed based on seven predefined variables: age, sex, the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage, resection status, perineural invasion (PNI), lymphovascular invasion (LVI), and degree of tumor differentiation. Compared with GBADC, GBNEC patients were younger (median age 56.0 vs 64.0 years; P = 0.001), and more patients presented with advanced stages of tumor (P = 0.003). Patients with GBNEC also had a higher rate of PNI (55.6% vs 22.4%; P < 0.001), and LVI (63.9% vs 45.80%; P = 0.658). Before PSM, GBNEC patients had inferior prognoses compared with GBADC patients with a shorter median overall survival (mOS) (15.02 vs 20.11 months; P = 0.0028) and a shorter median recurrence-free survival (mRFS) (10.30 vs 15.17 months; P = 0.0028). However, after PSM analyses, there were no differences in OS (mOS 18.6 vs 18.0 months; P=0.24) or RFS (mRFS 10.98 vs 12.02 months; P = 0.39) between the GBNEC and GBADC cases. After multivariate analysis, tumor diagnosis (GBNEC vs GBADC) was not identified as an independent risk factor for shorter RFS (P = 0.506) or OS (P = 0.731). Unfavorable pathological features, including advanced AJCC tumor stages, poor differentiation, presence of LVI, and positive resection margins (all P < 0.05), were independent risk factors for inferior OS and RFS. GBNEC is difficult to diagnose early and has a prognosis comparable to stage-matched poorly differentiated GBADC. Tumor diagnosis (either GBADC or GBNEC) was not an independent risk factor for the patient’s OS. Unfavorable pathological features of the neoplasm are the main determinants
