    Get PDF

Impact of the Glancing Angle Deposition on the Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Growth and Their Thermal Barrier Coating Properties

    Get PDF
Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is the most common material used as a thermal barrier in several engineering applications. The majority of films produced by physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques use normal incidence and lead to the columnar growth normal to the substrate. The typical columnar structure of sputter-deposited films is largely influenced, among other parameters, by pressure, temperature, thickness, and the ion-to-atom ratio incident at the substrate or substrate bias voltage. Another important experimental parameter used to modify the film properties is the direction of the incident flux of the depositing species with respect to the substrate surface. In this chapter an oblique angle deposition (OAD) approach was used to grow YSZ with tilted columnar structures, to study the impact of this deposition technique on the microstructure, morphology, and, correspondingly, the thermal conductivity of YSZ films, in order to improve the insulator potential of these thin films. Additionally, in the chapter, we present a detailed description of the oblique angle deposition (OAD) technique and double-layer model used for determination of the effective thermal conductivity of YSZ samples grown over thick substrates

Portal hypertension in pediatric patients is often associated with prehepatic portal hypertension (PHPH), frequently linked to thrombosis and cavernomatous degeneration of the portal vein (CDVP). This study evaluates the efficacy of the MesoRexBypass (MRB) in managing PHPH and associated thrombosis. Methods: A retrospective prognostic cohort design was employed to analyze the clinical outcomes of nine pediatric patients who underwent MRB between 2020 and 2022. Clinical and surgical variables were examined, including graft type, surgical time, and complications. Postoperative follow-up confirmed MRB functionality. Results: The MRB proved highly successful, with improved clinical parameters observed in all patients. Significant reductions in gastrointestinal bleeding, esophageal varices, and hypertensive gastropathy were observed postoperatively. Thrombocytopenia and liver enzyme levels showed substantial improvement, indicating enhanced liver function and amelioration of hypersplenism. The MRB's adaptability was demonstrated using autologous grafts and various graft sources. One patient experienced shunt thrombosis, another experienced minor gastrointestinal bleeding, and another died. The MRB exhibited a high success rate and few complications. Conclusion: The MRB is an effective and versatile surgical technique for managing PHPH in pediatric patients. This study emphasizes its promising outcomes and suggests its potential for enhancing treatment approaches and quality of life in this patient population. Further research with larger cohorts is needed to strengthen the evidence presented. The MRB holds promise as a valuable addition to the management of PHPH in children. Level of Evidence IV

In the COVID-19 pandemic, older adults from vulnerable ethnoracial groups are at high risk of infection, hospitalization, and death. We aimed to explore the pandemic's impact on the well-being and cognition of older adults living in the United States (US), Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Peru. 1,608 (646 White, 852 Latino, 77 Black, 33 Asian; 72% female) individuals from the US and four Latin American countries aged ≥ 55 years completed an online survey regarding well-being and cognition during the pandemic between May and September 2020. Outcome variables (pandemic impact, discrimination, loneliness, purpose of life, subjective cognitive concerns) were compared across four US ethnoracial groups and older adults living in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Peru. Mean age for all participants was 66.7 ( = 7.7) years and mean education was 15.4 ( = 2.7) years. Compared to Whites, Latinos living in the US reported greater economic impact ( < .001,  = .031); while Blacks reported experiencing discrimination more often ( < .001,  = .050). Blacks and Latinos reported more positive coping ( < .001,  = 040). Compared to Latinos living in the US, Latinos in Chile, Mexico, and Peru reported greater pandemic impact, Latinos in Mexico and Peru reported more positive coping, Latinos in Argentina, Mexico, and Peru had greater economic impact, and Latinos in Argentina, Chile, and Peru reported less discrimination. The COVID-19 pandemic has differentially impacted the well-being of older ethnically diverse individuals in the US and Latin America. Future studies should examine how mediators like income and coping skills modify the pandemic's impact. Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry
