Serum N
Background. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of serum N-glycan profiling for prognosis in hemodialysis patients. Methods. Serum N-glycan analysis was performed in 100 hemodialysis patients in June 2008 using the glycoblotting method, which allows high-throughput, comprehensive, and quantitative N-glycan analysis. All patients were longitudinally followed up for 5 years. To evaluate the independent predictors for prognosis, patients' background, blood biochemistry, and N-glycans intensity were analyzed using Cox regression multivariate analysis. Selected N-glycans and independent factors were evaluated using the log-rank test with the Kaplan-Meier method to identify the predictive indicators for prognosis. Each patient was categorized according to the number of risk factors to evaluate the predictive potential of the risk criteria for prognosis. Results. In total, 56 N-glycan types were identified in the hemodialysis patients. Cox regression multivariate analysis showed cardiovascular events, body mass index, maximum intima media thickness, and the serum N-glycan intensity of peak number 49 were predictive indicators for overall survival. Risk classification according to the number of independent risk factors revealed significantly poor survival by increasing the number of risk factors. Conclusions. Serum N-glycan profiling may have a potential to predict prognosis in patients undergoing hemodialysis

crystals (ACs) with different degree of approximation to quasicrystal,
Zn--Au--Yb 1/1 and 2/1 AC, and studied the external pressure effect on their Yb
mean-valence . Whereas 1/1 AC distinctly exhibits a first-order-like jump
in at a transition pressure , 2/1 AC only shows an indistinct
anomaly at . We have also studied the pressure dependence of the
of Au--Al--Yb 1/1 AC, which is a prototypal AC exhibiting
pressure-induced quantum criticality. It shows a continuous valence anomaly at
a critical pressure where the magnetic susceptibility diverges
toward zero temperature, in contrast to the valence jump in the Zn--Au--Yb 1/1
AC. These results are discussed based on a theoretical model of quantum
critical valence fluctuation
Differences in Ocular Complications Between Candida albicans and Non-albicans Candida Infection Analyzed by Epidemiology and a Mouse Ocular Candidiasis Model
Objectives:Candida species are a major cause of hospital infections, including ocular candidiasis, but few studies have examined the propensities of specific species to invade the eye or the unique immunological responses induced. This study examined the frequency and characteristics of species-specific Candida eye infections by epidemiology and experiments using a mouse ocular candidiasis model.Methods: We reviewed medical records of candidemia patients from January 2012 to March 2017. We also evaluated ocular fungal burden, inflammatory cytokine and chemokine profiles, and inflammatory cell profiles in mice infected with Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, or Candida parapsilosis.Results: During the study period, 20 ocular candidiasis cases were diagnosed among 99 candidemia patients examined by ophthalmologists. Although C. parapsilosis was the most frequent candidemia pathogen, only C. albicans infection was significantly associated with ocular candidiasis by multivariate analysis. In mice, ocular fungal burden and inflammatory mediators were significantly higher during C. albicans infection, and histopathological analysis revealed invading C. albicans surrounded by inflammatory cells. Ocular neutrophil and inflammatory monocyte numbers were significantly greater during C. albicans infection.Conclusion:Candida albicans is strongly associated with ocular candidiasis due to greater capacity for invasion, induction of inflammatory mediators, and recruitment of neutrophils and inflammatory monocytes
Hydrogen Isotope (H2 and D2) Sorption Study of CHA-Type Zeolites
Using either single H2 and D2 or H2-D2 mixed gases, the sorption abilities of CHA (chabazite)-type zeolites ion-exchanged with K, Na, or Ca were studied at 77, 201, and 250 K. The LTA (Linde Type A) (3A) and FAU (faujasite)-type zeolites were also examined for comparison. The pore diameters in these materials were found to decrease on the order of FAU > Ca-CHA > [K-CHA, Na-CHA, and LTA(3A)]. The quantities of D2 adsorbed on these zeolites were larger than the amounts of H2. At higher temperatures, the CHA-type zeolites having smaller pores exhibited superior D2/H2 selectivity compared with the LTA(3A) and FAU, suggesting that hydrogen isotope separation using zeolites is affected by pore size
