    W. B. Yeats\u27s A Vision : Explications and Contexts is the first volume of essays devoted to A Vision and the associated system developed by W. B. Yeats and his wife, George. A Vision is all-encompassing in its stated aims and scope, and it invites a wide range of approaches—as demonstrated in the essays collected here, written by the foremost scholars in the field. The first six essays present explications of broader themes in A Vision itself: the system\u27s general principles; incarnate life and the Faculties; discarnate life and the Principles; how Yeats relates his own work to other philosophical approaches; and his consideration of the historical process. A further three essays include an examination of the elusive Thirteenth Cone, a consideration of astrological features in the automatic script, and a view of the poetry within A Vision. The final five essays look at contextual themes, whether of collaboration and influence—between husband, wife, and spirits, or with another poet—or the gender perspective within these interrelations, the historical context of Golden-Dawn occultism or the broader political context of fascism in the 1920s and 1930s. Throughout, the different contributors take a variety of stances with regard to texts and the automatic script.     Coherent Heteroepitaxy of Bi2Se3 on GaAs (111)B

    We report the heteroepitaxy of single crystal thin films of Bi2Se3 on the (111)B surface of GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that Bi2Se3 grows highly c-axis oriented, with an atomically sharp interface with the GaAs substrate. By optimizing the growth of a very thin GaAs buffer layer before growing the Bi2Se3, we demonstrate the growth of thin films with atomically flat terraces over hundreds of nanometers. Initial time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements herald opportunities for probing coherent spin dynamics at the interface between a candidate topological insulator and a large class of GaAs-based heterostructures.Comment: To appear in Applied Physics Letter

    The Metropolis and Evangelical Life: Coherence and Fragmentation in the ‘Lost City of London’

    This article examines the interplay of different processes of cultural and subjective fragmentation experienced by conservative evangelical Anglicans, based on an ethnographic study of a congregation in central London. The author focuses on the evangelistic speaking practices of members of this church to explore how individuals negotiate contradictory norms of interaction as they move through different city spaces, and considers their response to tensions created by the demands of their workplace and their religious lives. Drawing on Georg Simmel’s ‘The Metropolis and Mental Life’, the author argues that their faith provides a sense of coherence and unity that responds to experiences of cultural fragmentation characteristic of everyday life in the city, while simultaneously leading to a specific consciousness of moral fragmentation that is inherent to conservative evangelicalism

    Interplay between ferromagnetism, surface states, and quantum corrections in a magnetically doped topological insulator

    The breaking of time-reversal symmetry by ferromagnetism is predicted to yield profound changes to the electronic surface states of a topological insulator. Here, we report on a concerted set of structural, magnetic, electrical and spectroscopic measurements of \MBS thin films wherein photoemission and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies have recently shown surface ferromagnetism in the temperature range 15 K ≤T≤100\leq T \leq 100 K, accompanied by a suppressed density of surface states at the Dirac point. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy reveal an inhomogeneous distribution of Mn atoms, with a tendency to segregate towards the sample surface. Magnetometry and anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements are insensitive to the high temperature ferromagnetism seen in surface studies, revealing instead a low temperature ferromagnetic phase at T≲5T \lesssim 5 K. The absence of both a magneto-optical Kerr effect and anomalous Hall effect suggests that this low temperature ferromagnetism is unlikely to be a homogeneous bulk phase but likely originates in nanoscale near-surface regions of the bulk where magnetic atoms segregate during sample growth. Although the samples are not ideal, with both bulk and surface contributions to electron transport, we measure a magnetoconductance whose behavior is qualitatively consistent with predictions that the opening of a gap in the Dirac spectrum drives quantum corrections to the conductance in topological insulators from the symplectic to the orthogonal class.Comment: To appear in Phys.     A comprehensive assessment of the applicability of available and proposed offshore mooring and foundation technologies and design tools for array applications

    PublishedThe function and type of mooring and/or foundation system are determined by a number of factors including: cost, site characteristics, expected environmental loading and environmental or legislative constraints. The design of the device and its mode of operation will also influence the decision making process. It is the role of DTOcean Work Package 4 to produce a decision making tool which has the capability to assess a range of technologies for the design and selection of mooring and foundation systems for marine renewable energy (MRE) device arrays. In this first deliverable report, criteria are introduced which can be used to appraise technologies and approaches relevant to MRE devices. Existing mooring and foundation technologies used in the offshore industry are summarised with examples given of MRE device deployments. A general overview of the design tools which are currently used for mooring and foundation design in the offshore and MRE industries is provided, along with a list of the capabilities of several commercially available software packages.European Commission’s 7th Framework; Grant agreement number: 60859
