    Teachers' Growth Mindset and Work Engagement in the Chinese Educational Context: Well-Being and Perseverance of Effort as Mediators

    The current study investigated the relationships among growth mindset, work engagement, perseverance of effort and well-being for secondary school teachers in the Chinese educational context. We adopted Growth Mindset Inventory, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Grit Scale (Perseverance subscale), and PERMA profiles that measure five dimensions of well-being. Participants included 472 secondary school teachers from 10 secondary schools in central China. Correlation analysis showed that growth mindset, well-being, and perseverance of effort could all predict work engagement. Moreover, the structural equation model and mediation analysis further suggested that well-being and perseverance of effort could partially mediate the relationship between growth mindset and work engagement. This study permitted to advance our knowledge about the relationship between growth mindset and work engagement, which should be considered for future teaching practices and teacher development

    Mindfulness Practice versus Physical Exercise in Enhancing Vitality

    Vitality is important for subjective well-being and performance, which makes strategies for its enhancement an important research issue. While prior research showed that mindfulness practice and physical exercise are both effective at enhancing vitality, no study has compared their efficacy. This study aimed to address this issue. Seventy-one Chinese adults participated in the study and were randomized to one of the intervention groups, i.e., mindfulness practice or physical exercise. The mindfulness practice group completed guided mindfulness trainings, while the physical exercise group completed self-chosen aerobic trainings for seven days. The levels of vitality and its four factors at three time points (baseline, post-intervention, 7-day follow-up) were measured and compared. Compared with physical exercise, mindfulness practice showed stronger effects in enhancing vitality and maintaining the improvements. The findings suggest that guided mindfulness practice is more effective than self-chosen aerobic physical exercise at enhancing vitality and maintaining its improvements

    Long-term outcomes of macrovascular diseases and metabolic indicators of bariatric surgery for severe obesity type 2 diabetes patients with a meta-analysis.

    There is currently no detailed evidence for the long-term effects of bariatric surgery on severely obese with type 2 diabetes, such as the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. In order to provide evidence on the risks of macrovascular diseases and metabolic indicators of bariatric surgery follow-up for more than five years, we searched in the Cochrane library, Pubmed, and EMBASE databases from the earliest studies to January 31, 2019. Randomized clinical trials or cohort studies compared bariatric surgery and conventional medical therapy for long-term incidence of macrovascular events and metabolic outcomes in severely obese patients with T2DM. Fixed-effects and random-effects meta-analyses were performed to pool the relative risks (RRs), hazard ratios (HRs) and weighted mean difference (WMD). Publication bias and heterogeneity were examined. Four RCTs and six cohort studies were finally involved in this review. Patients in the bariatric surgery group as compared to the conventional treatment group had lower incidence of macrovascular complications (RR = 0.43, 95%CI = 0.27~0.70), cardiovascular events (CVEs) (HR = 0.52, 95%CI = 0.39~0.71), and myocardial infarction (MI) (RR = 0.40, 95%CI = 0.26~0.61). At the same time, the results demonstrate that bariatric surgery is associated with better weight and better glycemic control over the long-term than non-surgical therapies, and reveal that different surgical methods have different effects on various metabolic indicators. Bariatric surgery significantly decreases macrovascular complications over the long term and is associated with greater weight loss and better intermediate glucose outcomes among T2DM patients with severe obesity as compared to patients receiving only conservative medical measures

    Shock Characteristics of the Opposed Disc Springs (ODS) Shock Isolator with Pretightening under Boundary Friction Condition

    In this study, to solve the problems of shock environment and shock isolation, about which there is still a lack of reasonable description, an isokinetic shock distinguishing method (ISDM), which can quantitatively distinguish between shock and forced vibration state, is presented. And the shock isolation performance of an opposed disc springs (ODS) shock isolator with pretightening under boundary friction condition is investigated. The static and dynamic stiffness properties of the ODS shock isolator are discussed. Relying on ISDM, a shock dynamic model of the ODS shock isolator with pretightening under boundary friction condition is established. The average method is adopted to solve the model theoretically. The shock acceleration ratio (SAR), shock displacement ratio (SDR), and relative displacement ratio (RDR) of the model are calculated using the numerical method and verified by experiments. Both numerical and experimental results show that ISDM is effective. And the effects on isolation efficiency of the number of disc springs, additional supporting force, pretightening force, load, and the shock velocity constant of the ODS shock isolator are discussed, which provide guidelines for its further practical application

    Berberine Induces hERG Channel Deficiency through Trafficking Inhibition

    Aims: The human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) encodes the α subunit of the IKr, which plays an essential role in repolarization of action potentials. hERG channels are targeted by various pro-arrhythmic drugs. Berberine (BBR) was previously found to acutely inhibit hERG currents and prolong action potential duration. The present study aimed to determine long-term effects of BBR on the expression of 135kDa/155kDa hERG and the mechanism. Methods and Results: hERG expression was assessed by western blot. Mature hERG (155 kDa) was reduced, whereas ER-located hERG (135 kDa) was increased by BBR. This indicated that hERG was restricted to the ER and that BBR disrupted channel trafficking. To determine the mechanism of trafficking inhibition, we performed western blot and immunoprecipitation to test folding of hERG by assessing interaction between hERG and Hsp90/Hsp70. Both the expression of Hsp90 and its interaction with hERG were strongly decreased by BBR. These data suggest that BBR reduces channel folding to induce trafficking inhibition. Western blot and confocal imaging were used to further detect whether the unfolded protein response (UPR) was activated. Active ATF6, a marker of the UPR, was activated by BBR. Calnexin and calreticulin, chaperones that are activated by ATF6 to assist channel folding, were also elevated and increasingly colocalized with hERG. These data also demonstrate that the UPR was activated. Immunoprecipitation and western blot assays were performed after BBR treatment to examine ubiquitination and degradation, common endpoints of the UPR. We found that the ER-restricted hERG was ubiquitinized and degraded in the lysosomes and proteasomes. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that BBR induces hERG channel deficiency by inhibiting channel trafficking after incubation for 24h. Trafficking inhibition activated the UPR, and the ER-restricted hERG was ubiquitinized and degraded in lysosomes and proteasomes
