    Using Conservative Estimation for Conditional Probability instead of Ignoring Infrequent Case

    There are several estimators of conditional probability from observed frequencies of features. In this paper, we propose using the lower limit of confidence interval on posterior distribution determined by the observed frequencies to ascertain conditional probability.     Polysemy Detection in Distributed Representation of Word Sense

    In this paper, we propose a statistical test to determine whether a given word is used as a polysemic word or not. The statistic of the word in this test roughly corresponds to the fluctuation in the senses of the neighboring words a nd the word itself. Even though the sense of a word corresponds to a single vector, we discuss how polysemy of the words affects the position of vectors.     A Change of Computed Tomographic Findings of Two Cases of Giant Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysms after Cervical Carotid Artery Occlusion

    The effects of cervical carotid artery occlusion on two giant internal carotid artery aneurysms were studied by computed tomography (CT). In both cases, the density on CT findings of the thrombosed parts in the aneurysms were changed with time from hyperdensity in the immediate post operative period to isodensity and finally to decreased density. For giant aneurysms treated with occlusion of the proximal artery, CT scanning is a reliable and atraumatic method for follow-up review, providing precise information concerning actual size, thrombosis, and pathological changes

    Simultaneous development of adenocarcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in the stomach: case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and adenocarcinoma are distinct neoplasms originating from different cell layers. Approximately 20% of patients with GIST develop other cancers.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of the coexistence of adenocarcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Gastric endoscopy showed the ulcerated tumor with bleeding along the lesser curvature of the proximal stomach and a submucosal nodule that measured about 3 cm in diameter in the lower part of the stomach body. Their pathological examination showed gastric cancer (poorly differentiated diffuse adenocarcinoma) and GIST (low-risk category). Further, immunohistochemical staining for C-kit and CD34 was positive, while that for SMA and S-100 was negative.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although it is not easy to speculate on the coexistence of adenocarcinoma and GIST, pre-and post-operative diagnoses may be essential, and such cancer development is not considered to be unusual.</p

    GPR52 accelerates fatty acid biosynthesis in a ligand-dependent manner in hepatocytes and in response to excessive fat intake in mice

    Gpr52 is an orphan G-protein-coupled receptor of unknown physiological function. We found that Gpr52-deficient (Gpr52−/−) mice exhibit leanness associated with reduced liver weight, decreased hepatic de novo lipogenesis, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. Treatment of the hepatoma cell line HepG2 cells with c11, the synthetic GPR52 agonist, increased fatty acid biosynthesis, and GPR52 knockdown (KD) abolished the lipogenic action of c11. In addition, c11 induced the expressions of lipogenic enzymes (SCD1 and ELOVL6), whereas these inductions were attenuated by GPR52-KD. In contrast, cholesterol biosynthesis was not increased by c11, but its basal level was significantly suppressed by GPR52-KD. High-fat diet (HFD)-induced increase in hepatic expression of Pparg2 and its targets (Scd1 and Elovl6) was absent in Gpr52−/− mice with alleviated hepatosteatosis.
