A three-dimensional pollutant transport model in orthogonal curvilinear and sigma coordinate system for Pearl river estuary
In this paper, the development of a three-dimensional numerical pollutant transport model, which is coupled with a previously developed hydrodynamic model, is delineated in details. Special features of the model include orthogonal curvilinear coordinate in the horizontal direction and sigma coordinate in the vertical direction. Besides, a simple but efficient open boundary condition of pollutant transport is adopted. It is then applied to simulate the transport of a representative water quality parameter chemical oxygen demand in Manganese (COD[sub Mn]) in the Pearl river estuary, which is the largest estuary in South China. It can be shown, from the simulated results, that there exists a transboundary action between Guangdong province and Hong Kong special administrative region for the pollutants in the wastewater discharged from Pearl river delta region.Department of Civil and Environmental EngineeringAuthor name used in this publication: K. Towards a Better Understanding of the Local Attractor in Particle Swarm Optimization: Speed and Solution Quality
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a popular nature-inspired meta-heuristic
for solving continuous optimization problems. Although this technique is widely
used, the understanding of the mechanisms that make swarms so successful is
still limited. We present the first substantial experimental investigation of
the influence of the local attractor on the quality of exploration and
exploitation. We compare in detail classical PSO with the social-only variant
where local attractors are ignored. To measure the exploration capabilities, we
determine how frequently both variants return results in the neighborhood of
the global optimum. We measure the quality of exploitation by considering only
function values from runs that reached a search point sufficiently close to the
global optimum and then comparing in how many digits such values still deviate
from the global minimum value. It turns out that the local attractor
significantly improves the exploration, but sometimes reduces the quality of
the exploitation. As a compromise, we propose and evaluate a hybrid PSO which
switches off its local attractors at a certain point in time. The effects

Measurement of Trace I-129 Concentrations in CsI Powder and Organic Liquid Scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Levels of trace radiopurity in active detector materials is a subject of
major concern in low-background experiments. Procedures were devised to measure
trace concentrations of I-129 in the inorganic salt CsI as well as in organic
liquid scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) which leads to
improvement in sensitivities by several orders of magnitude over other methods.
No evidence of their existence in these materials were observed. Limits of < 6
X 10^{-13} g/g and < 2.6 X 10^{-17} g/g on the contaminations of I-129 in CsI
and liquid scintillator, respectively, were derived.These are the first results
in a research program whose goals are to develop techniques to measure trace

Wigner Crystals Phases in Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems

The Wigner crystal phase diagram of the bilayer systems have been studied
using variational methods. Five crystal phases are obtained. As the layer
spacing increases, the system will undergo a sequence of phase transitions. A
common feature of most bilayer Wigner crystals is that they have mixed
(pseudo-spin) ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order.Comment: 19 figures. Figures will be provided upon request. Submitted in PRB

Remarks on Hawking radiation as tunneling from the BTZ black holes
Hawking radiation viewed as a semiclassical tunneling process from the event
horizon of the (2 + 1)-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole is carefully
reexamined by taking into account not only the energy conservation but also the
conservation of angular momentum when the effect of the emitted particle's
self-gravitation is incorporated. In contrast to previous analysis of this
issue in the literature, our result obtained here fits well to the
Kraus-Parikh-Wilczek's universal conclusion without any modification to the
Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy formulae of the BTZ black hole.Comment: 12pages, no figure, use JHEP3.cls. Version better than published one

From semiclassical transport to quantum Hall effect under low-field Landau quantization
The crossover from the semiclassical transport to quantum Hall effect is
studied by examining a two-dimensional electron system in an AlGaAs/GaAs
heterostructure. By probing the magneto-oscillations, it is shown that the
semiclassical Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) formulation can be valid even when the
minima of the longitudinal resistivity approach zero. The extension of the
applicable range of the SdH theory could be due to the damping effects
resulting from disorder and temperature. Moreover, we observed plateau-plateau
transition like behavior with such an extension. From our study, it is
important to include the positive magnetoresistance to refine the SdH theory.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Anomaly analysis of Hawking radiation from Kaluza-Klein black hole with squashed horizon
Considering gravitational and gauge anomalies at the horizon, a new method
that to derive Hawking radiations from black holes has been developed by
Wilczek et al. In this paper, we apply this method to non-rotating and rotating
Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizon, respectively. For the rotating
case, we found that, after the dimensional reduction, an effective U(1) gauge
field is generated by an angular isometry. The results show that the gauge
current and energy-momentum tensor fluxes are exactly equivalent to Hawking
