Stoichiometry control of the electronic properties of the LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 heterointerface
We investigate the effect of the laser parameters of pulsed laser deposition
on the film stoichiometry and electronic properties of LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (001)
heterostructures. The La/Al ratio in the LaAlO_3 films was varied over a wide
range from 0.88 to 1.15, and was found to have a strong effect on the interface
conductivity. In particular, the carrier density is modulated over more than
two orders of magnitude. The film lattice expansion, caused by cation
vacancies, is found to be the important functional parameter. These results can
be understood to arise from the variations in the electrostatic boundary
conditions, and their resolution, with stoichiometry.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio
Depth profile photoemission study of thermally diffused Mn/GaAs (001) interfaces
We have performed a depth profile study of thermally diffused Mn/GaAs (001)
interfaces using photoemission spectroscopy combined with Ar-ion
sputtering. We found that Mn ion was thermally diffused into the deep region of
the GaAs substrate and completely reacted with GaAs. In the deep region, the Mn
2 core-level and Mn 3 valence-band spectra of the Mn/GaAs (001) sample
heated to 600 C were similar to those of GaMnAs,
zinc-blende-type MnAs dots, and/or interstitial Mn in tetrahedrally coordinated
by As atoms, suggesting that the Mn 3 states were essentially localized but
were hybridized with the electronic states of the host GaAs. Ferromagnetism was
observed in the dilute Mn phase.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Anisotropic strains and magnetoresistance of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}
Thin films of perovskite manganite La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} were grown
epitaxially on SrTiO_3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO_3(100) substrates by the pulsed
laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as
well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements.
The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted
tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO_3, MgO, and LaAlO_3
cases, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that
the samples with cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresistance than the
noncubic ones do. The present result demonstrates that the magnetoresistance of
La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} can be controlled by lattice distortion via externally

Filtering of shrew DDoS attacks in frequency domain
The shrew Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are periodic, bursty, and stealthy in nature. They are also known as Reduction of Quality (RoQ) attacks. Such attacks could be even more detrimental than the widely known flooding DDoS attacks because they damage the victim servers for a long time without being noticed, thereby denying new visitors to the victim servers, which are mostly e-commerce sites. Thus, In order to minimize the huge monetary losses, there is a pressing need to effectively detect such attacks in real-time. Unfortunately, effective detection of shrew attacks remains an open problem. In this paper, we meet this challenge by proposing a new signal processing approach to identifying and detecting the attacks by examining the frequency-domain characteristics of incoming traffic flows to a server. A major strength of our proposed technique is that its detection time is less than a few seconds. Furthermore, the technique entails simple software or hardware implementations, making it easily deployable in a real-life network environment. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Spatial Distribution of Metal Emissions in SNR 3C 397 Viewed with Chandra and XMM
We present X-ray equivalent width imaging of the supernova remnant (SNR) 3C
397 for Mg He\alpha, Si He\alpha, S He\alpha, and Fe K\alpha complex lines with
the Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. The images reveal that the heavier the
element is, the smaller the extent of the element distribution is. The Mg
emission is evidently enhanced in the southeastern blow-out region, well along
the radio boundary there, and appears to partially envelope the eastern Fe
knot. Two bilateral hat-like Si line-emitting structures are along the northern
and southern borders, roughly symmetric with respect to the southeast-northwest
elongation axis. An S line-emitting shell is located just inner to the northern
radio and IR shell, indicating of a layer of reversely shocked sulphur in the
ejecta. A few enhanced Fe features are basically aligned along the diagonal of
the rectangular shape of the SNR, which implicates an early asymmetric SN
