Analytical considerations of flow boiling heat transfer in metal-foam filled tubes
Flow boiling in metal-foam filled tube was analytically investigated based on a modified microstructure model, an original boiling heat transfer model and fin analysis for metal foams. Microstructure model of metal foams was established, by which fiber diameter and surface area density were precisely predicted. The heat transfer model for flow boiling in metal foams was based on annular pattern, in which two phase fluid was composed by vapor region in the center of the tube and liquid region near the wall. However, it was assumed that nucleate boiling performed only in the liquid region. Fin analysis and heat transfer network for metal foams were integrated to obtain the convective heat transfer coefficient at interface. The analytical solution was verified by its good agreement with experimental data. The parametric study on heat transfer coefficient and boiling mechanism was also carried out
Crossover of magnetoresistance in the zerogap half-metallic Heusler alloy Fe2CoSi
This work reports on the band structure and magneto-transport investigations
of the inverse Heusler compound Fe2CoSi. The first-principles calculations
reveal that Fe2CoSi has a very peculiar band structure with a conducting
property in the majority spin channel and a nearly zero bandgap in the minority
spin channel. The synthesized Fe2CoSi sample shows a high-ordered inverse
Heusler structure with a magnetic moment of 4.88 {\mu}B at 5 K and a high Curie
temperature of 1038 K. With increasing temperature, a crossover from positive
to negative magnetoresistance (MR) is observed. Complemented with the Hall
effect measurements, we suggest the intriguing crossover of MR can be ascribed
to the dominant spin carriers changing from the gapless minority spin channel
to the majority spin channel at Fermi level.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, submitted for publicatio
Heterogeneities in ventricular conduction following treatment with heptanol: A multi-electrode array study in Langendorff-Perfused mouse hearts
Background: Previous studies have associated slowed ventricular conduction with the arrhythmogenesis mediated by the gap junction and sodium channel inhibitor heptanol in mouse hearts. However, they did not study the propagation patterns that might contribute to the arrhythmic substrate. This study used a multi-electrode array mapping technique to further investigate different conduction abnormalities in Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts exposed to 0.1 or 2 mM heptanol. Methods: Recordings were made from the left ventricular epicardium using multi-electrode arrays in spontaneously beating hearts during right ventricular 8 Hz pacing or S1S2 pacing. Results: In spontaneously beating hearts, heptanol at 0.1 and 2 mM significantly reduced the heart rate from 314 ± 25 to 189 ± 24 and 157 ± 7 bpm, respectively (ANOVA, p < 0.05 and p < 0.001). During regular 8 Hz pacing, the mean LATs were increased by 0.1 and 2 mM heptanol from 7.1 ± 2.2 ms to 19.9 ± 5.0 ms (p < 0.05) and 18.4 ± 5.7 ms (p < 0.05). The standard deviation of the mean LATs was increased from 2.5 ± 0.8 ms to 10.3 ± 4.0 ms and 8.0 ± 2.5 ms (p < 0.05), and the median of phase differences was increased from 1.7 ± 1.1 ms to 13.9 ± 7.8 ms and 12.1 ± 5.0 ms by 0.1 and 2 mM heptanol (p < 0.05). P5 took a value of 0.2 ± 0.1 ms and was not significantly altered by heptanol at 0.1 or 2 mM (1.1 ± 0.9 ms and 0.9 ± 0.5 ms, p > 0.05). P50 was increased from 7.3 ± 2.7 ms to 24.0 ± 12.0 ms by 0.1 mM heptanol and then to 22.5 ± 7.5 ms by 2 mM heptanol (p < 0.05). P95 was increased from 1.7 ± 1.1 ms to 13.9 ± 7.8 ms by 0.1 mM heptanol and to 12.1 ± 5.0 ms by 2 mM heptanol (p < 0.05). These changes led to increases in the absolute inhomogeneity in conduction (P5–95) from 7.1 ± 2.6 ms to 31.4 ± 11.3 ms, 2 mM: 21.6 ± 7.2 ms, respectively (p < 0.05). The inhomogeneity index (P5–95/P50) was significantly reduced from 3.7 ± 1.2 to 3.1 ± 0.8 by 0.1 mM and then to 3.3 ± 0.9 by 2 mM heptanol (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Increased activation latencies, reduced CVs, and the increased inhomogeneity index of conduction were associated with both spontaneous and induced ventricular arrhythmias
Deterministically entangling distant nitrogen-vacancy centers by a nanomechanical cantilever
We present a practical scheme by global addressing to deterministically
entangle negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centers in distant diamonds
using a nano-mechanical cantilever with the magnetic tips strongly coupled to
the N-V electron spins. Symmetric Dicke states are generated as an example, and
the experimental feasibility and challenge of our scheme are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
A New Spin Gapless Semiconductors Family: Quaternary Heusler Compounds
Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the band structures of a
series of quaternary LiMgPdSn-type Heusler compounds. Our calculation results
show that five compounds CoFeMnSi, CoFeCrAl, CoMnCrSi, CoFeVSi and FeMnCrSb
possess unique electronic structures characterized by a half-metallic gap in
one spin direction while a zero-width gap in the other spin direction showing
spin gapless semiconducting behavior. We further analysis the electronic and
magnetic properties of all quaternary Heusler alloys involved, and reveal a
semi-empirical general rule (total valence electrons number being 26 or 28) for
indentifying spin gapless semiconductors in Heusler compounds. The influences
of lattice distortion and main-group element change have also been discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, 1 supplementary file, submitted for publicatio
