Grazing Eclipsing Dwarf Nova CW Monocerotis: Dwarf Nova-Type Outburst in a Possible Intermediate Polar?
We observed the 2002 October-November outburst of the dwarf nova CW Mon. The
outburst showed a clear signature of a premaximum halt, and a more rapid
decline after reaching the outburst maximum. On two separate occasions, during
the premaximum stage and near the outburst maximum, shallow eclipses were
recorded. This finding confirms the previously suggested possibility of the
grazing eclipsing nature of this system. The separate occurrence of the
eclipses and the premaximum halt can be understood as a result of a combination
of two-step ignition of an outburst and the inside-out propagation of the
heating wave. We detected a coherent short-period (0.02549 d) signal on two
subsequent nights around the optical maximum. This signal was likely present
during the maximum phase of the 2000 January outburst. We interpret this signal
as a signature of the intermediate polar (IP) type pulses. The rather strange
outburst properties, strong and hard X-ray emission, and the low luminosity of
the outburst maximum might be understood as consequences of the supposed IP
nature. The ratio between the suggested spin period and the orbital period,
however, is rather unusual for a system having an orbital period of ~0.176 d.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, to appear in PAS
Diagnosing the Clumpy Protoplanetary Disk of the UXor Type Young Star GM Cephei
UX Orionis stars (UXors) are Herbig Ae/Be or T Tauri stars exhibiting
sporadic occultation of stellar light by circumstellar dust. GM\,Cephei is such
a UXor in the young (~Myr) open cluster Trumpler\,37, showing prominent
infrared excess, emission-line spectra, and flare activity. Our photometric
monitoring (2008--2018) detects (1)~an 3.43~day period, likely arising
from rotational modulation by surface starspots, (2)~sporadic brightening on
time scales of days due to accretion, (3)~irregular minor flux drops due to
circumstellar dust extinction, and (4)~major flux drops, each lasting for a
couple of months with a recurrence time, though not exactly periodic, of about
two years. The star experiences normal reddening by large grains, i.e., redder
when dimmer, but exhibits an unusual "blueing" phenomenon in that the star
turns blue near brightness minima. The maximum extinction during relatively
short (lasting ~days) events, is proportional to the duration, a
consequence of varying clump sizes. For longer events, the extinction is
independent of duration, suggestive of a transverse string distribution of
clumps. Polarization monitoring indicates an optical polarization varying
--8, with the level anticorrelated with the slow brightness
change. Temporal variation of the unpolarized and polarized light sets
constraints on the size and orbital distance of the circumstellar clumps in the
interplay with the young star and scattering envelope. These transiting clumps
are edge-on manifestations of the ring- or spiral-like structures found
recently in young stars with imaging in infrared of scattered light, or in
submillimeter of thermalized dust emission.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure
Investigation into the multiple recent sinkholes in Pokhara, Nepal
Since November 2013, numerous sinkholes have been forming in the Armala area of Pokhara Valley, Central Nepal, posing serious threat to local residents. In order to provide countermeasures for reducing sinkhole risk, detailed investigations into the cause and the formation mechanism of the sinkholes are crucial. Preliminary surveys were conducted in June 2014 and November 2014. Comparison of photos, taken in the two surveys, clearly indicates not only the formation of new sinkholes, but also the re-activation of filled sinkholes. By means of dynamic cone penetration tests and surface wave investigations, qualitative characterization of the soil profile was attained, and shallow weak soil layers which are believed to be the location for future sinkholes could be identified. On the basis of the preliminary field investigation, possible sinkhole formation mechanisms are considered. A risk of sinkhole does not seem to disappear as white turbid water continuously springs. It indicates that the internal erosion of white clayey silt layer is still in progress. In August 2015, a boring was carried out beside one of the largest sinkholes. The overall structure of ground layers was first revealed and a 2.5m high cavity at 7.5-10m deep from the ground surface was found within a thick white clayey silt layer. The Young and Bright Type Ia Supernova ASASSN-14lp: Discovery, Early-Time Observations, First-Light Time, Distance to NGC 4666, and Progenitor Constraints
On 2014 Dec. 9.61, the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN or
"Assassin") discovered ASASSN-14lp just days after first light using a
global array of 14-cm diameter telescopes. ASASSN-14lp went on to become a
bright supernova ( mag), second only to SN 2014J for the year. We
present prediscovery photometry (with a detection less than a day after first
light) and ultraviolet through near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic data
covering the rise and fall of ASASSN-14lp for more than 100 days. We find that
ASASSN-14lp had a broad light curve (), a
-band maximum at , a rise time of days, and moderate host--galaxy extinction (). Using ASASSN-14lp we derive a distance modulus for NGC 4666 of
corresponding to a distance of Mpc.
However, adding ASASSN-14lp to the calibrating sample of Type Ia supernovae
still requires an independent distance to the host galaxy. Finally, using our
early-time photometric and spectroscopic observations, we rule out red giant
secondaries and, assuming a favorable viewing angle and explosion time, any

CD4+ Effector T cells Accelerate Alzheimer\u27s Disease in Mice
BACKGROUND: Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by pathological deposition of misfolded self-protein amyloid beta (Aβ) which in kind facilitates tau aggregation and neurodegeneration. Neuroinflammation is accepted as a key disease driver caused by innate microglia activation. Recently, adaptive immune alterations have been uncovered that begin early and persist throughout the disease. How these occur and whether they can be harnessed to halt disease progress is unclear. We propose that self-antigens would induct autoreactive effector T cells (Teffs) that drive pro-inflammatory and neurodestructive immunity leading to cognitive impairments. Here, we investigated the role of effector immunity and how it could affect cellular-level disease pathobiology in an AD animal model.
METHODS: In this report, we developed and characterized cloned lines of amyloid beta (Aβ) reactive type 1 T helper (Th1) and type 17 Th (Th17) cells to study their role in AD pathogenesis. The cellular phenotype and antigen-specificity of Aβ-specific Th1 and Th17 clones were confirmed using flow cytometry, immunoblot staining and Aβ T cell epitope loaded haplotype-matched major histocompatibility complex II IA
RESULTS: The propagated Aβ-Th1 and Aβ-Th17 clones were confirmed stable and long-lived. Treatment of APP/PS1 mice with Aβ reactive Teffs accelerated memory impairment and systemic inflammation, increased amyloid burden, elevated microglia activation, and exacerbated neuroinflammation. Both Th1 and Th17 Aβ-reactive Teffs progressed AD pathology by downregulating anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs) as recorded in the periphery and within the central nervous system.
CONCLUSIONS: These results underscore an important pathological role for CD4+ Teffs in AD progression. We posit that aberrant disease-associated effector T cell immune responses can be controlled. One solution is by Aβ reactive Tregs
Dynamic Surface Activity by Folding and Unfolding an Amphiphilic α-Helix
We describe a rationally designed peptide with tunable surface activity, where the dynamics of surface activity are an outcome of helical folding. Our rationally designed model peptide is surface-active only as an α-helix. We apply circular dichroism to show that the folded population can be controlled with changes in electrolyte concentration, and we apply pendant bubble tensiometry to explore dynamic surfactant activity. This study shows a peptide that responds to environmental stimuli with dynamic folding and surface activity. Extending this concept to selective binding peptides will lead to new tools, where dynamic surface activity is coupled to targeted binding
Depression diagnoses following the identification of bipolar disorder: costly incongruent diagnoses
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Previous research has documented that the symptoms of bipolar disorder are often mistaken for unipolar depression prior to a patient's first bipolar diagnosis. The assumption has been that once a patient receives a bipolar diagnosis they will no longer be given a misdiagnosis of depression. The objectives of this study were 1) to assess the rate of subsequent unipolar depression diagnosis in individuals with a history of bipolar disorder and 2) to assess the increased cost associated with this potential misdiagnosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study utilized a retrospective cohort design using administrative claims data from 2002 and 2003. Patient inclusion criteria for the study were 1) at least 2 bipolar diagnoses in 2002, 2) continuous enrollment during 2002 and 2003, 3) a pharmacy benefit, and 4) age 18 to 64. Patients with at least 2 unipolar depression diagnoses in 2003 were categorized as having an incongruent diagnosis of unipolar depression. We used propensity scoring to control for selection bias. Utilization was evaluated using negative binomial models. We evaluated cost differences between patient cohorts using generalized linear models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 7981 patients who met all inclusion criteria for the analysis, 17.5% (1400) had an incongruent depression diagnosis (IDD). After controlling for background differences, individuals who received an IDD had higher rates of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric utilization and cost, on average, an additional $1641 per year compared to individuals without an IDD.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A strikingly high proportion of bipolar patients are given the differential diagnosis of unipolar depression <it>after </it>being identified as having bipolar disorder. Individuals with an IDD had increased acute psychiatric care services, suggesting higher levels of relapses, and were at risk for inappropriate treatment, as antidepressant therapy without a concomitant mood-stabilizing medication is contraindicated in bipolar disorder. Further prospective research is needed to validate the findings from this retrospective administrative claims-based analysis.</p
