    Pair production by boost-invariant fields in comoving coordinates

    We derive the pair-production probability in a constant electric field in Rindler coordinates in a quasi-classical approximation. Our result is different from the pair-production probability in an inertial frame (Schwinger formula). In particular, it exhibits non-trivial dependence on rapidity and deviation from Gaussian behavior at small transverse momenta.     Time-of-arrival distribution for arbitrary potentials and Wigner's time-energy uncertainty relation

    A realization of the concept of "crossing state" invoked, but not implemented, by Wigner, allows to advance in two important aspects of the time of arrival in quantum mechanics: (i) For free motion, we find that the limitations described by Aharonov et al. in Phys. Rev.     Existence of long-lived isotopes of a superheavy element in natural Au

    Evidence for the existence of long-lived isotopes with atomic mass numbers 261 and 265 and abundance of (1-10)x10−10^{-10} relative to Au has been found in a study of natural Au using an inductively coupled plasma - sector field mass spectrometer. The measured masses fit the predictions made for the masses of 261^{261}Rg and 265^{265}Rg (Z=111) and for some isotopes of nearby elements. The possibility that these isotopes belong to the recently discovered class of long-lived high spin super- and hyperdeformed isomeric states is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    The Quantum Vlasov Equation and its Markov Limit

    The adiabatic particle number in mean field theory obeys a quantum Vlasov equation which is nonlocal in time. For weak, slowly varying electric fields this particle number can be identified with the single particle distribution function in phase space, and its time rate of change is the appropriate effective source term for the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation. By analyzing the evolution of the particle number we exhibit the time structure of the particle creation process in a constant electric field, and derive the local form of the source term due to pair creation. In order to capture the secular Schwinger creation rate, the source term requires an asymptotic expansion which is uniform in time, and whose longitudinal momentum dependence can be approximated by a delta function only on long time scales. The local Vlasov source term amounts to a kind of Markov limit of field theory, where information about quantum phase correlations in the created pairs is ignored and a reversible Hamiltonian evolution is replaced by an irreversible kinetic one. This replacement has a precise counterpart in the density matrix description, where it corresponds to disregarding the rapidly varying off-diagonal terms in the adiabatic number basis and treating the more slowly varying diagonal elements as the probabilities of creating pairs in a stochastic process. A numerical comparison between the quantum and local kinetic approaches to the dynamical backreaction problem shows remarkably good agreement, even in quite strong electric fields, over a large range of times.Comment: 49 pages, RevTex/LaTeX2e, 8 .eps figures included in 404KB .gz file (~3MB total uncompressed).     We solve the quantum Vlasov equation for fermions and bosons, incorporating spontaneous pair creation in the presence of back-reactions and collisions. Pair creation is initiated by an external impulse field and the source term is non-Markovian. A simultaneous solution of Maxwell's equation in the presence of feedback yields an internal current and electric field that exhibit plasma oscillations with a period tau_pl. Allowing for collisions, these oscillations are damped on a time-scale, tau_r, determined by the collision frequency. Plasma oscillations cannot affect the early stages of the formation of a quark-gluon plasma unless tau_r >> tau_pl and tau_pl approx. 1/Lambda_QCD approx 1 fm/c.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure, REVTEX, epsfig.st

    Exact quantization of a PT-symmetric (reversible) Li\'enard-type nonlinear oscillator

    We carry out an exact quantization of a PT symmetric (reversible) Li\'{e}nard type one dimensional nonlinear oscillator both semiclassically and quantum mechanically. The associated time independent classical Hamiltonian is of non-standard type and is invariant under a combined coordinate reflection and time reversal transformation. We use von Roos symmetric ordering procedure to write down the appropriate quantum Hamiltonian. While the quantum problem cannot be tackled in coordinate space, we show how the problem can be successfully solved in momentum space by solving the underlying Schr\"{o}dinger equation therein. We obtain explicitly the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions (in momentum space) and deduce the remarkable result that the spectrum agrees exactly with that of the linear harmonic oscillator, which is also confirmed by a semiclassical modified Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule, while the eigenfunctions are completely different.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, Fast Track Communicatio

    Purpose: The objective of the present study was to analyze the early results from the surgical treatment of locally advanced carcinoma of the colon in its transverse section and the two flexures.Material and methods: The study covered 36 patients with locally advanced colonic carcinoma, 19 males and 17 females at a mean age of 65,6 years, treated in the Clinic of Liver, Biliary, Pancreatic and General Surgery, Tokuda Hospital of Sofia during the period from January 2007 to March 2013. Any necessary diagnostic and surgical methods were applied.Results: Multivisceral resections were commonly performed in order to achieve a radical surgery in cases of locally advanced disease. Great surgeon`s experience in liver, biliary and pancreatic interventions is obligatorily required. In this paper we share our experience in the treatment of this disease for a period of 6 years.Conclusion: Our application of the multivisceral resections results in surgical radicality along with acceptable levels of perioperative morbidity and mortality rates when compared to other studies in in the foreign literature available

    Multivisceral ‘en-bloc` resections of colorectal tumours - milestones in the surgical techniques

    Purpose: Colorectal tumours (CRT) consisting mainly of colorectal cancer (CRC) are diagnosed sometimes at an advanced T4 stage, i. e. local involvement of neighbouring organ/organs and anatomical structure/ structures. Aggressive surgical approach preceded and/or followed by neo-adjuvant/adjuvant therapy is advocated because of proven benefit for the patient. The aim of this study was to carry out a literature survey, on the one hand, and to analyze the cases from the authors` institutional experience, on the other hand, in an attempt to submit for consideration the milestones of the multivisceral en-block resections in cases of locally advanced CRTs, i.e. to describe the specific surgical approaches depending on different tumour location and peritumoural involvement of adjacent structures and organs.Material and methods: A retrospective analysis of 154 cases of CRT was performed, all of them operated in the Clinic of Liver, Biliary, Pancreatic and General Surgery, Tokuda Hospital of Sofia, from January 1, 2007 to March 31, 2013. All the patients were diagnosed in an advanced T4-stage and received multivisceral en-bloc resections. Three main groups of methods that had been used were analyzed: 1) preoperative diagnosis, giving a hint of multivisceral en-bloc resection; 2) intraoperative assessment - gross tumour appearance, frozen sections (?), final histological examinations, and 3) surgical methods.Results: Early morbidity and mortality rates were 22,6% and 5,8%, respectively, without any significant difference when compared with ‘simple` colon and rectum resections and with literature data available.Conclusion: Multivisceral en-bloc resection for CRCs has been performed in more than 10% of the cases. It benefits the long-term prognosis. Tumour location and number of resected organs are essential characteristics of these procedures and they are independently associated with the quantity of intraoperative blood loss, higher early morbidity rates and more frequent local recurrence
