[Fe iii] lines in the planetary nebula NGC 2392
The Eskimo Nebula (NGC 2392) is a young double-shell planetary nebula (PN). Its intrinsic structure and the responsible shaping mechanism are still not fully understood. We present new optical spectroscopy of NGC 2392 at two different locations to obtain the spectra of the inner and outer shells. Several [Fe iii] lines are clearly detected. We find that these [Fe iii] lines mostly originate from the inner shell. Therefore, we suggest that NGC 2392 might have an intrinsic structure similar to the Ant Nebula Mz 3, which exhibits a number of [Fe iii] lines from the central dense regions. In this scenario, the inner and outer shells correspond to the central emission core and the outer lobes of Mz 3, respectively. © 2012 International Astronomical Union.published_or_final_versio

Flavor SU(3) symmetry and QCD factorization in and decays
Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of
charmless decays. All the relevant
topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the
QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation
ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be
important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this
work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative)
topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitative but somewhat
model-dependent) QCD factorization (QCDF) approach in these decays, by
explicitly showing how to translate each flavor SU(3) amplitude into the
corresponding terms in the QCDF framework. After estimating each flavor SU(3)
amplitude numerically using QCDF, we discuss various physical consequences,
including SU(3) breaking effects and some useful SU(3) relations among decay

Behaviors of beryllium compensation doping in InGaAsP grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy
We report structural properties as well as electrical and optical behaviors of beryllium (Be)-doped InGaAsP lattice-matched to InP grown by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. P type layers present a high degree of compensation on the order of 1018 cm−3, and for Be densities below 9.5×1017 cm−3, they are found to be n type. Enhanced incorporation of oxygen during Be doping is observed by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. Be in forms of interstitial donors or donor-like Be-O complexes for cell temperatures below 800°C is proposed to account for such anomalous compensation behaviors. A constant photoluminescence energy of 0.98 eV without any Moss-Burstein shift for Be doping levels up to 1018 cm−3 along with increased emission intensity due to passivation effect of Be is also observed. An increasing number of minority carriers tend to relax via Be defect state-related Shockley-Read-Hall recombination with the increase of Be doping density
A Continuum Model for Soil-Pile-Structure Interactions Under Earthquake Excitation
An exact analytical method for the interaction analysis of a fully coupled soil-pile-structure system under seismic excitation is investigated in this paper. Only horizontal shaking induced by harmonic SH waves was considered. The soil mass, pile and building were all considered as elastic with hysteretic type damping. Geometrically, the soil is modeled as an elastic isotropic homogeneous continuum, and both pile and structures are simplified as beam models. The structure and piles are coupled through a rigid foundation at the ground level. Buildings of various heights in Hong Kong designed to withstand wind load were analyzed using the present model. Only the shaking at the ground level is considered in this study. It was discovered that the maximum shaking of the piled-structures at ground level is generally larger than that of a free field ground shaking except near the first natural frequency of the coupled soil-pile-structure system. This first resonant frequency depends strongly on the natural frequency of the structure
TEDD: a database of temporal gene expression patterns during multiple developmental periods in human and model organisms
Characterization of the specific expression and chromatin profiles of genes enables understanding how they contribute to tissue/organ development and the mechanisms leading to diseases. Whilst the number of single-cell sequencing studies is increasing dramatically; however, data mining and reanalysis remains challenging. Herein, we systematically curated the up-to-date and most comprehensive datasets of sequencing data originating from 2760 bulk samples and over 5.1 million single-cells from multiple developmental periods from humans and multiple model organisms. With unified and systematic analysis, we profiled the gene expression and chromatin accessibility among 481 cell-types, 79 tissue-types and 92 timepoints, and pinpointed cells with the co-expression of target genes. We also enabled the detection of gene(s) with a temporal and cell-type specific expression profile that is similar to or distinct from that of a target gene. Additionally, we illustrated the potential upstream and downstream gene−gene regulation interactions, particularly under the same biological process(es) or KEGG pathway(s). Thus, TEDD (Temporal Expression during Development Database), a value-added database with a user-friendly interface, not only enables researchers to identify cell-type/tissue-type specific and temporal gene expression and chromatin profiles but also facilitates the association of genes with undefined biological functions in development and diseases. Flavor symmetry analysis of charmless B --> VP decays
Based upon flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform global fits to charmless
B decays into one pseudoscalar meson and one vector meson in the final
states. We consider different symmetry breaking schemes and find that the one
implied by na{\"i}ve factorization is slightly favored over the exact symmetry
case. The vertex of the unitarity triangle (UT)
constrained by our fits is consistent with other methods within errors. We have
found large color-suppressed, electroweak penguin and singlet penguin
amplitudes when the spectator quark ends up in the final-state vector meson.
Nontrivial relative strong phases are also required to explain the data. The
best-fit parameters are used to compute branching ratio and CP asymmetry
observables in all of the decay modes, particularly those in the decays

Puzzles in physics
I discuss some puzzles observed in exclusive meson decays, concentrating
on the large difference between the direct CP asymmetries in the and modes, the large
branching ratio, and the large deviation of the mixing-induced CP asymmetries
