Statistical Analysis of the Metropolitan Seoul Subway System: Network Structure and Passenger Flows
The Metropolitan Seoul Subway system, consisting of 380 stations, provides
the major transportation mode in the metropolitan Seoul area. Focusing on the
network structure, we analyze statistical properties and topological
consequences of the subway system. We further study the passenger flows on the
system, and find that the flow weight distribution exhibits a power-law
behavior. In addition, the degree distribution of the spanning tree of the

Spin relaxation in mesoscopic superconducting Al wires
We studied the diffusion and the relaxation of the polarized quasiparticle
spins in superconductors. To that end, quasiparticles of polarized spins were
injected through an interface of a mesoscopic superconducting Al wire in
proximity contact with an overlaid ferromagnetic Co wire in the single-domain
state. The superconductivity was observed to be suppressed near the
spin-injecting interface, as evidenced by the occurrence of a finite voltage
for a bias current below the onset of the superconducting transition. The spin
diffusion length, estimated from finite voltages over a certain length of Al
wire near the interface, was almost temperature independent in the temperature
range sufficiently below the superconducting transition but grew as the
transition temperature was approached. This temperature dependence suggests
that the relaxation of the spin polarization in the superconducting state is
governed by the condensation of quasiparticles to the paired state. The spin
relaxation in the superconducting state turned out to be more effective than in

iObjectify: self- and other-objectification on Grindr, a geosocial networking application designed for men who have sex with men
Grindr is a smartphone application for men who have sex with men (MSM). Despite its reputation as a ‘hook-up app’, little is known about its users’ self-presentation strategies and how this relates to objectification - this paper explores objectification on Grindr. The results of Study 1 showed that Grindr users objectified other men more than non-Grindr users. A content analysis of 1400 Grindr profiles in Study 2 showed that profile pictures with objectifying content were related to searching for sexual encounters. Finally, a survey of Grindr users in Study 3 revealed that objectification processes and sexualized profile pictures were related to some objectification-relevant online behaviors (e.g., increased use of Grindr, discussion of HIV status). Interestingly, the presence of body focused profile content was more related to sexual orientation disclosure (not being ‘out’) than to objectification. Sleepless in Seoul: `The Ant and the Metrohopper'
One of Aesop's (La Fontain's) famous fables `The Ant and the Grasshopper' is
widely known to give a moral lesson through comparison between the hard working
ant and the party-loving grasshopper. Here we show a slightly different version
of this fable, namely, "The Ant and the Metrohopper," which describes human
mobility patterns in modern urban life. Numerous real transportation networks
and the trajectory data have been studied in order to understand mobility
patterns. We study trajectories of commuters on the public transportation of
Metropolitan Seoul, Korea. Smart cards (Integrated Circuit Cards; ICCs) are
used in the public transportation system, which allow collection of transit
transaction data, including departure and arrival stations and time. This
empirical analysis provides human mobility patterns, which impact traffic
forecasting and transportation optimization, as well as urban planning.Comment: to be appeared in Journal of the Korean Physical Societ
Microscopic Theory of Rashba Interaction in Magnetic Metal
Theory of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in magnetic metals is worked out from
microscopic Hamiltonian describing d-orbitals. When structural inversion
symmetry is broken, electron hopping between -orbitals generates chiral
ordering of orbital angular momentum, which combines with atomic spin-orbit
coupling to result in the Rashba interaction. Rashba parameter characterizing
the interaction is band-specific, even reversing its sign from band to band.
Large enhancement of the Rashba parameter found in recent experiments is
attributed to the orbital mixing of 3d magnetic atoms with non-magnetic heavy
elements as we demonstrate by first-principles and tight-binding calculations.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Intra-genomic internal transcribed spacer region sequence heterogeneity and molecular diagnosis in clinical microbiology
Internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) sequencing is the most extensively used technology for accurate molecular identification of fungal pathogens in clinical microbiology laboratories. Intra-genomic ITS sequence heterogeneity, which makes fungal identification based on direct sequencing of PCR products difficult, has rarely been reported in pathogenic fungi. During the process of performing ITS sequencing on 71 yeast strains isolated from various clinical specimens, direct sequencing of the PCR products showed ambiguous sequences in six of them. After cloning the PCR products into plasmids for sequencing, interpretable sequencing electropherograms could be obtained. For each of the six isolates, 10–49 clones were selected for sequencing and two to seven intra-genomic ITS copies were detected. The identities of these six isolates were confirmed to be Candida glabrata (n = 2), Pichia (Candida) norvegensis (n = 2), Candida tropicalis (n = 1) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (n = 1). Multiple sequence alignment revealed that one to four intra-genomic ITS polymorphic sites were present in the six isolates, and all these polymorphic sites were located in the ITS1 and/or ITS2 regions. We report and describe the first evidence of intra-genomic ITS sequence heterogeneity in four different pathogenic yeasts, which occurred exclusively in the ITS1 and ITS2 spacer regions for the six isolates in this study.published_or_final_versio
