    Current and vorticity auto correlation functions in open microwave billiards

    Using the equivalence between the quantum-mechanical probability density in a quantum billiard and the Poynting vector in the corresponding microwave system, current distributions were studied in a quantum dot like cavity, as well as in a Robnik billiard with lambda=0.4, and an introduced ferrite cylinder. Spatial auto correlation functions for currents and vorticity were studied and compared with predictions from the random-superposition-of-plane-waves hypothesis.     Monte Carlo Study of Correlations in Quantum Spin Chains at Non-Zero Temperature

    Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains with various spin values (S=1/2,1,3/2,2,5/2S=1/2,1,3/2,2,5/2) are studied numerically with the quantum Monte Carlo method. Effective spin SS chains are realized by ferromagnetically coupling n=2Sn=2S antiferromagnetic spin chains with S=1/2S=1/2. The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility, the staggered susceptibility, and the static structure factor peak intensity are computed down to very low temperatures, T/J0.01T/J \approx 0.01. The correlation length at each temperature is deduced from numerical measurements of the instantaneous spin-spin correlation function. At high temperatures, very good agreement with exact results for the classical spin chain is obtained independent of the value of SS. For SS=2 chains which have a gap Δ\Delta, the correlation length and the uniform susceptibility in the temperature range Δ<T<J\Delta < T < J are well predicted by a semi-classical theory due to Damle and Sachdev.Comment: LaTeX EPJ macr

    A Methodology for Simulated Experiments in Interactive Search

    Interactive information retrieval has received much attention in recent years, e.g. [7]. Furthermore, increased activity in developing interactive features in search systems used across existing popular Web search engines suggests that interactive systems are being recognised as a promising next step in assisting information search. One of the most challenging problems with interactive systems however remains evaluation. We describe the general specifications of a methodology for conducting controlled and reproducible experiments in the context of interactive search. It was developed in the AutoAdapt project1 focusing on search in intranets, but the methodology is more generic than that and can be applied to interactive Web search as well. The goal of this methodology is to evaluate the ability of different algorithms to produce domain models that provide accurate suggestions for query modifications. The AutoAdapt project investigates the application of automatically constructed adaptive domain models for providing suggestions for query modifications to the users of an intranet search engine. This goes beyond static models such as the one employed to guide users who search the Web site of the University of Essex which is based on a domain model that has been built in advance using the documents’ markup structure

    This paper describes the prototype interactive search sys- Tem being developed within the AutoAdapt project1. The AutoAdapt project seeks to enhance the user experience in searching for information and navigating within selected do- main collections by providing structured representations of domain knowledge to be directly explored, logged, adapted and updated to refject user needs. We propose that this structure is a valuable stepping-stone in context-rich logging of user activities within the information seeking environment. Here we describe the primary components that have been implemented and the user interactions that it will support

    Information retrieval has become very popular over the last decade with the advent of the Web. Nevertheless, searching on the Web is very different to searching on smaller, often more structured collections such as intranets and digital libraries. Such collections are the focus of the recently started AutoAdapt project1. The project seeks to aid user search by providing well-structured domain knowledge to assist query modification and navigation. There are two challenges: acquiring the domain knowledge and adapting it automatically to the specific interest of the user community. At the workshop we will demonstrate an implemented prototype that serves as a starting point on the way to truly adaptive search

    Anatomy of the superior hypogastric plexus and its application in nerve-sparing paraaortic lymphadenectomy

    Background: The purpose of this study was to clarify the anatomy of the superior hypogastric plexus, which would contribute to advancement of nerve-sparing paraaortic lymphadenectomy. Materials and methods: Eighteen cadavers were dissected and morphometrically analysed based on photographic images. Anatomical landmarks such as aortic bifurcation, transitional points of abdominal aorta to bilateral common iliac arteries, and cross point of the right ureter and pelvic brim, and cross point of sigmoid mesentery and pelvic brim were selected as reference points. Results: The left lowest lumbar splanchnic nerve was located more laterally to transitional point of abdominal aorta to in 11/18 specimens, whereas the right lowest lumbar splanchnic nerve passed onto the right transitional point in only one specimen. The lowest lumbar splanchnic nerves or the superior hypogastric plexus covered the aortic bifurcation in 11/18 specimens. The superior hypogastric plexus was separate from the cross point of right ureter and pelvic brim as well as cross point of sigmoid mesentery and pelvic brim. Conclusions: The superior hypogastric plexus is at risk of injury during paraaortic lymphadenectomy because of its topography. Preservation of the superior hypogastric plexus regarding its anatomic basis during paraaortic lymphadenectomy is required
