Is it still a man's world? Examining gender disparities in Spanish-language newsrooms
Understanding the everyday occurrences of Latina journalists in the newsroom is an important way of understanding how gender roles are imparted within the workplace. This study examines the experiences Latina journalists face while working in Spanish language newsrooms predominantly populated or led by males and what discrepancies they have observed are present within the workplace. In-depth interviews were conducted with five Latina journalists in the United States, all of which immigrated from either Mexico or Spain. Findings suggest that various forms of discrimination continue to be present within the workplace and are most obvious in positions of authority, salary earnings, story assignments and acknowledgement of parental responsibilities. The study also found that although Latina journalists suffer similar forms of discrimination as do White female journalists, Latina journalists are discriminated against on another level due to additional discriminating factors such as race and class
