Determination of the beam-spin asymmetry of deuteron photodisintegration in the energy region E-gamma=1.1-2.3 GeV
The beam-spin asymmetry, Sigma, for the reaction gamma d -\u3e pn has been measured using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) for six photon-energy bins, between 1.1 and 2.3 GeV, and proton angles in the center-of-mass frame, theta(c.m.), between 25 degrees and 160 degrees. These are the first measurements of beam-spin asymmetries at theta(c.m.) = 90. for photon-beam energies above 1.6 GeV, and the first measurements for angles other than theta(c.m.) = 90 degrees. The angular and energy dependence of Sigma is expected to aid in the development of QCD-based models to understand the mechanisms of deuteron photodisintegration in the transition region between hadronic and partonic degrees of freedom, where both effective field theories and perturbative QCD cannot make reliable predictions
PERIOCULAR METASTASIS ASSOCIATED WITH COLORECTAL CARCINOMA
Purpose: To present a case of a 69-year old woman with periocular metastatic disease.
Methods: Standard ophthalmic examination combined with CT and PET/CT imaging, surgical excision of the tumour and histopathological and immunohistochemical examination.
Results: Patient presents with large solid lesion in left lateral eyelid angle. After surgical excision histopathological examination shows metastatic moderately to poorly differentiated rectal adenocarcinoma. PET/CT shows whole body subcutaneous metastases. Patient receives chemotherapy and eighteen months after eyelid surgery is without local recurrence.
Conclusions: Periocular metastasis can present with nonspecific features and should be considered in patients with known systemic malignancy. Treatment and follow up of these patients is multidisciplinary team work
Measurement of the Differential and Total Cross Sections of the ᵧd→KºɅ(p) Reaction Within the Resonance Region
We report the first measurement of differential and total cross sections for the γd →K0 Λ(p)reaction, using data from the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Data collected during two separate experimental runs were studied with photon-energy coverage 0.8-3.6 GeV and 0.5-2.6 GeV, respectively. The two measurements are consistent giving confidence in the method and determination of systematic uncertainties. The cross sections are compared with predictions from the KAON-MAID theoretical model (without kaon exchange), which deviate from the data at higher W and at forward kaon angles. These data, along with previously published cross sections for K+Λ photoproduction, provide essential constraints on the nucleon resonance spectrum. A first partial wave analysis was performed that describes the data without the introduction of new resonances
Literature-based discovery of diabetes- and ROS-related targets
Abstract Background Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known mediators of cellular damage in multiple diseases including diabetic complications. Despite its importance, no comprehensive database is currently available for the genes associated with ROS. Methods We present ROS- and diabetes-related targets (genes/proteins) collected from the biomedical literature through a text mining technology. A web-based literature mining tool, SciMiner, was applied to 1,154 biomedical papers indexed with diabetes and ROS by PubMed to identify relevant targets. Over-represented targets in the ROS-diabetes literature were obtained through comparisons against randomly selected literature. The expression levels of nine genes, selected from the top ranked ROS-diabetes set, were measured in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of diabetic and non-diabetic DBA/2J mice in order to evaluate the biological relevance of literature-derived targets in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. Results SciMiner identified 1,026 ROS- and diabetes-related targets from the 1,154 biomedical papers (http://jdrf.neurology.med.umich.edu/ROSDiabetes/). Fifty-three targets were significantly over-represented in the ROS-diabetes literature compared to randomly selected literature. These over-represented targets included well-known members of the oxidative stress response including catalase, the NADPH oxidase family, and the superoxide dismutase family of proteins. Eight of the nine selected genes exhibited significant differential expression between diabetic and non-diabetic mice. For six genes, the direction of expression change in diabetes paralleled enhanced oxidative stress in the DRG. Preparation, structural characterisation and antibacterial properties of Ga-doped sol-gel phosphate-based glass
A sol-gel preparation of Ga-doped phosphate-based glass with potential application in antimicrobial devices has been developed. Samples of composition (CaO)(0.30)(Na2O)(0.20-x) (Ga2O3) (x) (P2O5)(0.50) where x = 0 and 0.03 were prepared, and the structure and properties of the gallium-doped sample compared with those of the sample containing no gallium. Analysis of the P-31 MAS NMR data demonstrated that addition of gallium to the sol-gel reaction increases the connectivity of the phosphate network at the expense of hydroxyl groups. This premise is supported by the results of the elemental analysis, which showed that the gallium-free sample contains significantly more hydrogen and by FTIR spectroscopy, which revealed a higher concentration of -OH groups in that sample. Ga K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near-edge structure data revealed that the gallium ions are coordinated by six oxygen atoms. In agreement with the X-ray absorption data, the high-energy XRD results also suggest that the Ga3+ ions are octahedrally coordinated with respect to oxygen. Antimicrobial studies demonstrated that the sample containing Ga3+ ions had significant activity against Staphylococcus aureus compared to the control
Low Q^2 measurements of the proton form factor ratio
We present an updated extraction of the proton electromagnetic form factor
ratio, mu_p G_E/G_M, at low Q^2. The form factors are sensitive to the spatial
distribution of the proton, and precise measurements can be used to constrain
models of the proton. An improved selection of the elastic events and reduced
background contributions yielded a small systematic reduction in the ratio mu_p
