Design of a 3 GHz fine resolution LC DCO
In this thesis, the design of a fine resolution LC digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) is introduced. Two NMOS varactor banks are used to achieve 12 bits medium and fine frequency tuning. Both delta-sigma modulator and capacitive divider circuit are implemented to achieve a finer resolution and a larger dynamic range. The LC-oscillator has a coarse tuning range from 3.05 GHz to 3.85 GHz and a fine tuning range of 50MHz. It features a phase noise level of -115dBc/Hz at 1MHz frequency offset and consumes 5.4mW. Efficient simulation methodology is explored. Finally, this DCO is simulated in an All-Digital Phase Locked Loop (ADPLL) with other ideal behavior blocks implemented using Verilog-A, and the performance of the DCO is evaluated.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
Discussion paper. Conditional growth charts
Growth charts are often more informative when they are customized per
subject, taking into account prior measurements and possibly other covariates
of the subject. We study a global semiparametric quantile regression model that
has the ability to estimate conditional quantiles without the usual
distributional assumptions. The model can be estimated from longitudinal
reference data with irregular measurement times and with some level of
robustness against outliers, and it is also flexible for including covariate
information. We propose a rank score test for large sample inference on
covariates, and develop a new model assessment tool for longitudinal growth
data. Our research indicates that the global model has the potential to be a
very useful tool in conditional growth chart analysis.Comment: This paper discussed in: [math/0702636], [math/0702640],

Bayesian variable selection with shrinking and diffusing priors
We consider a Bayesian approach to variable selection in the presence of high
dimensional covariates based on a hierarchical model that places prior
distributions on the regression coefficients as well as on the model space. We
adopt the well-known spike and slab Gaussian priors with a distinct feature,
that is, the prior variances depend on the sample size through which
appropriate shrinkage can be achieved. We show the strong selection consistency
of the proposed method in the sense that the posterior probability of the true
model converges to one even when the number of covariates grows nearly
exponentially with the sample size. This is arguably the strongest selection
consistency result that has been available in the Bayesian variable selection
literature; yet the proposed method can be carried out through posterior
sampling with a simple Gibbs sampler. Furthermore, we argue that the proposed
method is asymptotically similar to model selection with the penalty. We
also demonstrate through empirical work the fine performance of the proposed
approach relative to some state of the art alternatives.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/14-AOS1207 the Annals of

Beam Management for Millimeter Wave Beamspace MU-MIMO Systems
Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication has attracted increasing attention as
a promising technology for 5G networks. One of the key architectural features
of mmWave is the use of massive antenna arrays at both the transmitter and the
receiver sides. Therefore, by employing directional beamforming (BF), both
mmWave base stations (MBSs) and mmWave users (MUEs) are capable of supporting
multi-beam simultaneous transmissions. However, most researches have only
considered a single beam, which means that they do not make full potential of
mmWave. In this context, in order to improve the performance of short-range
indoor mmWave networks with multiple reflections, we investigate the challenges
and potential solutions of downlink multi-user multi-beam transmission, which
can be described as a high-dimensional (i.e., beamspace) multi-user
multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) technique, including multi-user BF
training, simultaneous users' grouping, and multi-user multibeam power
allocation. Furthermore, we present the theoretical and numerical results to
demonstrate that beamspace MU-MIMO compared with single beam transmission can
largely improve the rate performance of mmWave systems.Comment: The sixth IEEE/CIC International Conference on Communications in
