-vacuum and inflationary bispectrum
In this paper, we discuss the non-Guassianity originated from the
-vacuum on the CMB anisotropy. For -vacuum, there exist
correlation between points in the acausal two patches of de Sitter spactime.
Such kind of correlation can lead to large local form non-Guassianity in
-vacuum. For the single field slow-roll inflationary scenario, the
spacetime is in a quasi-de Sitter phase during the inflation. We will show that
the -vacuum in this case will lead to non-Gaussianity with
distinguished feature, of a large local form and a very different shape.Comment: 39 pages, 8 figures, references added, minor changes, accepted by

Side information in robust principal component analysis: algorithms and applications
Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) aims at recovering a low-rank subspace from grossly corrupted high-dimensional (often visual) data and is a cornerstone in many machine learning and computer vision applications. Even though RPCA has been shown to be very successful in solving many rank minimisation problems, there are still cases where degenerate or suboptimal solutions are obtained. This is likely to be remedied by taking into account of domain-dependent prior knowledge. In this paper, we propose two models for the RPCA problem with the aid of side information on the low-rank structure of the data. The versatility of the proposed methods is demonstrated by applying them to four applications, namely background subtraction, facial image denoising, face and facial expression recognition. Experimental results on synthetic and five real world datasets indicate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed methods on these application domains, largely outperforming six previous approaches
DLC2 modulates angiogenic responses in vascular endothelial cells by regulating cell attachment and migration.
Deleted in liver cancer 1 (DLC1) is a RhoGTPase activation protein-containing tumor suppressor that associates with various types of cancer. Although DLC2 shares a similar domain structure with that of DLC1, the function of DLC2 is not well characterized. Here, we describe the expression and ablation of DLC2 in mice using a reporter-knockout approach. DLC2 is expressed in several tissues and in endothelial cells (ECs) of blood vessels. Although ECs and blood vessels show no histological abnormalities and mice appear overall healthy, DLC2-mutant mice display enhanced angiogenic responses induced by matrigel and by tumor cells. Silencing of DLC2 in human ECs has reduced cell attachment, increased migration, and tube formation. These changes are rescued by silencing of RhoA, suggesting that the process is RhoA pathway dependent. These results indicate that DLC2 is not required for mouse development and normal vessel formation, but may protect mouse from unwanted angiogenesis induced by, for example, tumor cells
Transport properties of annealed CdSe nanocrystal solids
Transport properties of artificial solids composed of colloidal CdSe
nanocrystals (NCs) are studied from 6 K to 250 K, before and after annealing.
Annealing results in greatly enhanced dark and photocurrent in NC solids, while
transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs show that the inter-dot
separation decreases. The increased current can be attributed to the
enhancement of inter-dot tunneling caused by the decreased separation between
NCs and by chemical changes in their organic cap. In addition, the absorption
spectra of annealed solids are slightly red-shifted and broadened. These
red-shifts may result from the change of the dielectric environment around the
NCs. Our measurements also indicate that Coulomb interactions between charges
on neighboring NCs play an important role in the tunneling current.Comment: 24 pages,4 figures, 1 tabl
Plasma-Like Negative Capacitance in Nano-Colloids
A negative capacitance has been observed in a nano-colloid between 0.1 and
10^-5 Hz. The response is linear over a broad range of conditions. The
low-omega dispersions of both the resistance and capacitance are consistent
with the free-carrier plasma model, while the transient behavior demonstrates
an unusual energy storage mechanism. A collective excitation, therefore, is
suggested.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Self-adaptation of Mutation Rates in Non-elitist Populations
The runtime of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) depends critically on their
parameter settings, which are often problem-specific. Automated schemes for
parameter tuning have been developed to alleviate the high costs of manual
parameter tuning. Experimental results indicate that self-adaptation, where
parameter settings are encoded in the genomes of individuals, can be effective
in continuous optimisation. However, results in discrete optimisation have been
less conclusive. Furthermore, a rigorous runtime analysis that explains how
self-adaptation can lead to asymptotic speedups has been missing. This paper
provides the first such analysis for discrete, population-based EAs. We apply
level-based analysis to show how a self-adaptive EA is capable of fine-tuning
its mutation rate, leading to exponential speedups over EAs using fixed
mutation rates.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on
