Energy levels of a parabolically confined quantum dot in the presence of spin-orbit interaction
We present a theoretical study of the energy levels in a parabolically
confined quantum dot in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction
(SOI). The features of some low-lying states in various strengths of the SOI
are examined at finite magnetic fields. The presence of a magnetic field
enhances the possibility of the spin polarization and the SOI leads to
different energy dependence on magnetic fields applied. Furthermore, in high
magnetic fields, the spectra of low-lying states show basic features of
Fock-Darwin levels as well as Landau levels.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by J. Appl. Phy
Spectrum of low-lying configurations with negative parity
Spectrum of low-lying five-quark configurations with strangeness quantum
number and negative parity is studied in three kinds of constituent
quark models, namely the one gluon exchange, Goldstone Boson exchange, and
instanton-induced hyperfine interaction models, respectively. Our numerical
results show that the lowest energy states in all the three employed models are
lying at 1800 MeV, about 200 MeV lower than predictions of various
quenched three-quark models. In addition, it is very interesting that the state
with the lowest energy in one gluon exchange model is with spin 3/2, but 1/2 in

Experimental study of contact transition control incorporating joint acceleration feedback
Joint acceleration and velocity feedbacks are incorporated into a classical internal force control of a robot in contact with the environment. This is intended to achieve a robust contact transition and force tracking performance for varying unknown environments, without any need of adjusting the controller parameters, A unified control structure is proposed for free motion, contact transition, and constrained motion in view of the consumption of the initial kinetic energy generated by a nonzero impact velocity. The influence of the velocity and acceleration feedbacks, which are introduced especially for suppressing the transition oscillation, on the postcontact tracking performance is discussed. Extensive experiments are conducted on the third joint of a three-link direct-drive robot to verify the proposed scheme for environments of various stiffnesses, including elastic (sponge), less elastic (cardboard), and hard (steel plate) surfaces. Results are compared with those obtained by the transition control scheme without the acceleration feedback. The ability of the proposed control scheme in resisting the force disturbance during the postcontact period is also experimentally investigated
Substrate effects on quasiparticles and excitons in graphene nanoflakes
The effects of substrate on electronic and optical properties of triangular
and hexagonal graphene nanoflakes with armchair edges are investigated by using
a configuration interaction approach beyond double excitation scheme. The
quasiparticle correction to the energy gap and exciton binding energy are found
to be dominated by the long-range Coulomb interactions and exhibit similar
dependence on the dielectric constant of the substrate, which leads to a
cancellation of their contributions to the optical gap. As a result, the
optical gaps are shown to be insensitive to the dielectric environment and
unexpectedly close to the single-particle gaps.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The boiling suppression of liquid nitrogen
When He gas is injected from room temperature into boiling liquid N,
boiling is suppressed, leaving liquid surface flat like a mirror. Although the
qualitative explanation for this phenomenon is known [Minkoff G J \textit{et
al}. Nature 1957;180(4599):1413-4.], it has not been studied quantitatively and
comprehensively yet. In this report, we made careful simultaneous measurements
of temperature and weight variation of the liquid. The results clearly indicate
that the boiling suppression is caused by cooling of the liquid with "internal
