A new three-parameter correlation for gamma-ray bursts with a plateau phase in the afterglow
Gamma ray bursts (GRBs) have great advantages for their huge burst energies,
luminosities and high redshifts in probing the Universe. A few interesting
luminosity correlations of GRBs have been used to test cosmology models.
Especially, for a subsample of long GRBs with known redshifts and a plateau
phase in the afterglow, a correlation between the end time of the plateau phase
(in the GRB rest frame) and the corresponding X-ray luminosity has been found.
In this paper, we re-analyze the subsample and found that a significantly
tighter correlation exists when we add a third parameter, i.e. the isotropic
-ray energy release, into the consideration. Additionally, both long
and intermediate duration GRBs are consistent with the same three-parameter
correlation equation. It is argued that the new three-parameter correlation is
consistent with the hypothesis that the subsample of GRBs with a plateau phase
in the afterglow be associated with the birth of rapidly rotating magnetars,
and that the plateau be due to the continuous energy-injection from the
magnetar. It is suggested that the newly born millisecond magnetars associated

Levels of abstraction in human supervisory control teams
This paper aims to report a study into the levels of abstraction hierarchy (LOAH) in two energy distribution teams. The original proposition for the LOAH was that it depicted five levels of system representation, working from functional purpose through to physical form to determine causes of a malfunction, or from physical form to functional purpose to determine the purpose of system function. The LOAH has been widely used throughout human supervisory control research to explain individual behaviour. The research seeks to focus on the application the LOAH to human supervisory control teams in semi-automated āintelligentā systems

Performance of bolted steel-beam to CFST-column joints using stiffened angles in column-removal scenario
This paper presents three experimental investigations on the performance of steel-beam to CFST-column joints using stiffened angle, long bolts and fin plate under a middle column removal scenario. Three specimens were designed and tested. The failure modes and catenary action are investigated in detail. The test results show that increasing the angle plate thickness at the joint could not only improve its performance significantly, but also trigger an early formation of catenary action. Increasing the length of short-limb had influence on the deformation ability of the proposed joint, rather than the load capacity. The buckling of stiffeners could prevent the brittle failure of the joints. With the contribution of catenary action, the joint shows much higher rotation capacities than that required in DoD design guidance. The initial stiffness of the joint was calculated using an analytical model with consideration of bolt pretension. Good agreement to the test results is achieved. A numerical analysis is also carried out, whose results show that adding additional row of bolts would improve the redundancy of the joint under column loss. An equivalent dynamic response evaluation of the joints was also performed. The results show that dynamic amplification coefficient should be worked out considering catenary action under large deformation
Modulo Three Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution
An important global property of a bit string is the number of ones in it. It
has been found that the parity (odd or even) of this number can be found by a
sequence of deterministic, translational invariant cellular automata with
parallel update in succession for a total of O(N^2) time. In this paper, we
discover a way to check if this number is divisible by three using the same
kind of cellular automata in O(N^3) time. We also speculate that the method
described here could be generalized to check if it is divisible by four and

Sub-threshold J/Ļ and Ļ production in Ī³A collisions
We study sub-threshold heavy quarkonium (J/Ļ and Ļ) photo-productions in Ī³A collisions as an independent test of the universality of the nucleon-nucleon short range correlation (SRC) in nuclear scattering processes. Just below the Ī³p threshold, the cross section is dominated by the mean field contribution of nucleons inside the nucleus. The SRC contributions start to dominate at lower photon energies, depending on the fraction of the SRC pairs in the target nucleus. We give an estimate of the cross sections in the sub-threshold region both for J/Ļ and Ļ. This may be helpful for future measurements at JLab as well as at the Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S., and especially in China

Testing Hollnagel's contextual control mod
Please contact publisher for further reprinting or re-useThis article sets out to test the hypothetical COtext and COntrol Model (COCOM) developed by Hollnagel (1993). Essentially, Hollnagel develops the argument that team behavior should be analyzed at a macro, rather than micro, level. He proposes 4 principal models of team activity: strategic, tactical, opportunistic, and scrambled. These modes of team behavior vary in terms of the degree of forward planning (highest in the strategic mode) and reactivity to the environment (highest in the scrambled mode). He further hypothesizes a linear progression through the modes from strategic to tactical to opportunistic to scrambled, depending on context, and vice versa. To test the COCOM model, we placed teams of people in a simulated energy distribution system. Our results confirm Hollnagel's hypothesized model in 2 main ways. First, we show that the team behavior could be categorized reliably into the 4 control modes and this provided a useful way of distinguishing between experimental conditions. Second, the progression between control modes conformed to the linear progression as predicted. This research provided the first independent test of the COCOM model and lends empirical support to the hypotheses
