    Fermentation of Food Waste in a Leach Bed Reactor- Effects of pH and Inoculum to Substrate Ratio

    A more sustainable method for the treatment of accumulated food waste, instead of landfilling, is in urgently need. Fermentation is one of the most promising waste-to-energy technologies for energy recovery from food waste. This study investigated food waste fermentation in a leach bed reactor (LBR) under different operating conditions, i.e. pH and inoculum to substrate ratio. Firstly, for the impact of pH, the food waste fermentation was investigated in a leach bed reactor operated at acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions. Highest solids reduction of 87% was obtained at pH 7 in 14 days of reaction time with minimum mixing. The concentration of volatile fatty acids increased to 28.6 gCOD/L under pH 7, while the highest butyric acid of 16 g COD/L was obtained at pH 6. Bacterial community structure was narrowed down to Bifidobacterium and Clostridium at pH 6, while Bacteroides and Dysgonomonas were identified as main players at both pH 7 and 8. Bacterial populations in the food residue generally reflected those in the leachate, but some bacteria were selectively enriched in the leachate or the food residue. Bacterial community dynamics suggested that biodegradable food waste was first fermented by one of the dominant players (e.g., Clostridium) and the other degraded resistant dietary fibers later (e.g., Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Dysgonomonas). Secondly, for the impact of inoculum to substrate ratio, the food waste fermentation was carried out at ISRs of 5%, 10% and 15% (vs/vs). A maximum sCOD concentration of 30-33g/L was obtained under all ISR conditions. Correspondingly, a high degradation efficiency of 85%-91% was obtained at ISR 5%, 10% and 15%, respectively. A faster hydrolysis rate and a shorter reaction time was obtained under ISR 10%, which suggested a higher ISR can accelerate the hydrolysis rate of the food waste, which lead to a decrease in digestion time. The VFA concentration (24-28g COD/L) and distribution under three ISR conditions had negligible differences, indicating that ISR did not have an influence on the acidogenesis of food waste in this study

    The effects of Tbx15 and Pax1 on facial and other physical morphology in mice

    DNA variants in or close to the human TBX15 and PAX1 genes have been repeatedly associated with facial morphology in independent genome‐wide association studies, while their functional roles in determining facial morphology remain to be understood. We generated Tbx15 knockout (Tbx15 (−/−)) and Pax1 knockout (Pax1 (−/−)) mice by applying the one‐step CRISPR/Cas9 method. A total of 75 adult mice were used for subsequent phenotype analysis, including 38 Tbx15 mice (10 homozygous Tbx15 (−/−), 18 heterozygous Tbx15 (+/−), 10 wild‐type Tbx15 (+/+) WT littermates) and 37 Pax1 mice (12 homozygous Pax1 (−/−), 15 heterozygous Pax1 (+/−), 10 Pax1 (+/+) WT littermates). Facial and other physical morphological phenotypes were obtained from three‐dimensional (3D) images acquired with the HandySCAN BLACK scanner. Compared to WT littermates, the Tbx15 (−/−) mutant mice had significantly shorter faces (p = 1.08E‐8, R(2) = 0.61) and their ears were in a significantly lower position (p = 3.54E‐8, R(2) = 0.62) manifesting a “droopy ear” characteristic. Besides these face alternations, Tbx15 (−/−) mutant mice displayed significantly lower weight as well as shorter body and limb length. Pax1 (−/−) mutant mice showed significantly longer noses (p = 1.14E‐5, R(2) = 0.46) relative to WT littermates, but otherwise displayed less obvious morphological alterations than Tbx15 (−/−) mutant mice did. We provide the first direct functional evidence that two well‐known and replicated human face genes, Tbx15 and Pax1, impact facial and other body morphology in mice. The general agreement between our findings in knock‐out mice with those from previous GWASs suggests that the functional evidence we established here in mice may also be relevant in humans

    TextDiff: Mask-Guided Residual Diffusion Models for Scene Text Image Super-Resolution

    The goal of scene text image super-resolution is to reconstruct high-resolution text-line images from unrecognizable low-resolution inputs. The existing methods relying on the optimization of pixel-level loss tend to yield text edges that exhibit a notable degree of blurring, thereby exerting a substantial impact on both the readability and recognizability of the text. To address these issues, we propose TextDiff, the first diffusion-based framework tailored for scene text image super-resolution. It contains two modules: the Text Enhancement Module (TEM) and the Mask-Guided Residual Diffusion Module (MRD). The TEM generates an initial deblurred text image and a mask that encodes the spatial location of the text. The MRD is responsible for effectively sharpening the text edge by modeling the residuals between the ground-truth images and the initial deblurred images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our TextDiff achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on public benchmark datasets and can improve the readability of scene text images. Moreover, our proposed MRD module is plug-and-play that effectively sharpens the text edges produced by SOTA methods. This enhancement not only improves the readability and recognizability of the results generated by SOTA methods but also does not require any additional joint training.     Influence of area-to-volume ratios on dissolution characteristics and mechanical properties of acid-corroded sandstone

    To study the effect of area-to-volume ratio on the dissolution and deterioration characteristics of sandstone in the static acid-rock reaction system, the HCl and H2SO4 solutions with pH=2 and 5 are selected as corrosion environments, and the different area-to-volume ratios are set by changing surface areas of sandstone. The effects of area-to-volume ratios on the physicochemical and mechanical properties of sandstone are studied. According to the acid-rock reaction theory, the effect of the area-to-volume ratio on the diffusion-dissolution mechanism during sandstone corrosion is analyzed. The results show that the sandstone mass loss rate and amount of substance of total cations are all related to the corrosion time as a power function. The area-to-volume is positively correlated with the dissolution rate constant and has little effect on the reaction order. The reaction order is less than one in different environments, indicating that the sandstone corrosion rate decreases gradually with soaking time. In the pH=2、5 HCl solution and pH=2 H2SO4 solution, the amount of substance of cation shows N(Ca2+) > N(Na+) > N(Mg2+) > N(K+), and in the pH=5 H2SO4 solution, it is N(Na+) > N(Ca2+) > N(Mg2+) ≈N(K+). The acid-rock reaction can be summarized as two mechanisms: diffusion control and chemical reaction control. The two control parameters are negatively correlated with the area-to-volume ratio and positively with the pH value of solutions. The parameter values in the H2SO4 solutions are slightly larger than the corresponding values in the HCl solutions. The interaction between sandstone and acid in different conditions is dominated by the chemical reaction. The area-to-volume ratio significantly influences diffusion more than the chemical reaction. The mechanical properties of sandstone are weakened after acid corrosion. The damage of sandstone under uniaxial compression can be divided into four stages: compaction, elastic deformation, plastic yielding and post-peak. The peak strength and elastic modulus decrease, the peak strain increases, the brittleness declines, and the ductility is enhanced. The larger the area-to-volume ratio, the more severe the sandstone deterioration is. Overall, the smaller the pH value of solutions, the more prominent the effects of the area-to-volume ratio on the dissolution characteristics and mechanical properties of sandstone are, which is more obvious in the HCl solutions than in the H2SO4 solutions. The finding can provide theoretical references for the safety assessment and disaster prevention of rock mass engineering under an acidic environment

    Mapping global prevalence of depression among postpartum women

    Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychological condition following childbirth, and may have a detrimental effect on the social and cognitive health of spouses, infants, and children. The aim of this study was to complete a comprehensive overview of the current literature on the global epidemiology of PPD. A total of 565 studies from 80 different countries or regions were included in the final analysis. Postpartum depression was found in 17.22% (95% CI 16.00–18.51) of the world’s population. Meta-regression analysis showed that study size, country or region development, and country or region income were the causes of heterogeneity. Multivariable meta-regression analysis found that study size and country or area development were the most important predictors. Varied prevalence rates were noted in geographic regions with the highest rate found in Southern Africa (39.96%). Of interested was a significantly lower rate of PPD in developed countries or high-income countries or areas. Furthermore, the findings showed that there was a substantial difference in rates of PPD when marital status, educational level, social support, spouse care, violence, gestational age, breast feeding, child mortality, pregnancy plan, financial difficulties, partnership, life stress, smoking, alcohol intake, and living conditions were considered in the pooled estimates. Our results indicated that one out of every five women experiences PPD which is linked to income and geographic development. It is triggered by a variety of causes that necessitate the attention and committed intervention of primary care providers, clinicians, health authorities, and the general population.</p

    Performance assessment of medical service for organ transplant department based on diagnosis-related groups: A programme incorporating ischemia-free liver transplantation in China

    BackgroundIn July 2017, the first affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen university carried out the world’s first case of ischemia-free liver transplantation (IFLT). This study aimed to evaluate the performance of medical services pre- and post-IFLT implementation in the organ transplant department of this hospital based on diagnosis-related groups, so as to provide a data basis for the clinical practice of the organ transplant specialty.MethodsThe first pages of medical records of inpatients in the organ transplant department from 2016 to 2019 were collected. The China version Diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) were used as a risk adjustment tool to compare the income structure, service availability, service efficiency and service safety of the organ transplant department between the pre- and post-IFLT implementation periods.ResultsIncome structure of the organ transplant department was more optimized in the post-IFLT period compared with that in the pre-IFLT period. Medical service performance parameters of the organ transplant department in the post-IFLT period were better than those in the pre-IFLT period. Specifically, case mix index values were 2.65 and 2.89 in the pre- and post-IFLT periods, respectively (p = 0.173). Proportions of organ transplantation cases were 14.16 and 18.27%, respectively (p &lt; 0.001). Compared with that in the pre-IFLT period, the average postoperative hospital stay of liver transplants decreased by 11.40% (30.17 vs. 26.73 days, p = 0.006), and the average postoperative hospital stay of renal transplants decreased by 7.61% (25.23 vs.23.31 days, p = 0.092). Cost efficiency index decreased significantly compared with that in the pre-IFLT period (p &lt; 0.001), while time efficiency index fluctuated around 0.83 in the pre- and post-IFLT periods (p = 0.725). Moreover, the average postoperative hospital stay of IFLT cases was significantly shorter than that of conventional liver transplant cases (p = 0.001).ConclusionThe application of IFLT technology could contribute to improving the medical service performance of the organ transplant department. Meanwhile, the DRGs tool may help transplant departments to coordinate the future delivery planning of medical service
