    Channel characterization for 1D molecular communication with two absorbing receivers

    This letter develops a one-dimensional (1D) diffusion-based molecular communication system to analyze channel responses between a single transmitter (TX) and two fully-absorbing receivers (RXs). Incorporating molecular degradation in the environment, rigorous analytical formulas for i) the fraction of molecules absorbed, ii) the corresponding hitting rate, and iii) the asymptotic fraction of absorbed molecules as time approaches infinity at each RX are derived when an impulse of molecules are released at the TX. By using particle-based simulations, the derived analytical expressions are validated. Simulations also present the distance ranges of two RXs that do not impact molecular absorption of each other, and demonstrate that the mutual influence of two active RXs reduces with the increase in the degradation rate

    Parameter Estimation in a Noisy 1D Environment via Two Absorbing Receivers

    This paper investigates the estimation of different parameters, e.g., propagation distance and flow velocity, by utilizing two fully-absorbing receivers (RXs) in a one-dimensional (1D) environment. The time-varying number of absorbed molecules at each RX and the number of absorbed molecules in a time interval as time approaches infinity are derived. Noisy molecules in this environment, that are released by sources in addition to the transmitter, are also considered. A novel estimation method, namely difference estimation (DE), is proposed to eliminate the effect of noise by using the difference of received signals at the two RXs. For DE, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on the variance of estimation is derived. Independent maximum likelihood estimation is also considered at each RX as a benchmark to show the performance advantage of DE. Aided by particle-based simulation, the derived analytical results are verified. Furthermore, numerical results show that DE attains the CRLB and is less sensitive to the change of noise than independent estimation at each RX.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Globecom 202

    Threshold for the Outbreak of Cascading Failures in Degree-degree Uncorrelated Networks

    In complex networks, the failure of one or very few nodes may cause cascading failures. When this dynamical process stops in steady state, the size of the giant component formed by remaining un-failed nodes can be used to measure the severity of cascading failures, which is critically important for estimating the robustness of networks. In this paper, we provide a cascade of overload failure model with local load sharing mechanism, and then explore the threshold of node capacity when the large-scale cascading failures happen and un-failed nodes in steady state cannot connect to each other to form a large connected sub-network. We get the theoretical derivation of this threshold in degree-degree uncorrelated networks, and validate the effectiveness of this method in simulation. This threshold provide us a guidance to improve the network robustness under the premise of limited capacity resource when creating a network and assigning load. Therefore, this threshold is useful and important to analyze the robustness of networks.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    A Promising Approach to Optimizing Sequential Treatment Decisions for Depression:Markov Decision Process

    The most appropriate next step in depression treatment after the initial treatment fails is unclear. This study explores the suitability of the Markov decision process for optimizing sequential treatment decisions for depression. We conducted a formal comparison of a Markov decision process approach and mainstream state-transition models as used in health economic decision analysis to clarify differences in the model structure. We performed two reviews: the first to identify existing applications of the Markov decision process in the field of healthcare and the second to identify existing health economic models for depression. We then illustrated the application of a Markov decision process by reformulating an existing health economic model. This provided input for discussing the suitability of a Markov decision process for solving sequential treatment decisions in depression. The Markov decision process and state-transition models differed in terms of flexibility in modeling actions and rewards. In all, 23 applications of a Markov decision process within the context of somatic disease were included, 16 of which concerned sequential treatment decisions. Most existing health economic models relating to depression have a state-transition structure. The example application replicated the health economic model and enabled additional capacity to make dynamic comparisons of more interventions over time than was possible with traditional state-transition models. Markov decision processes have been successfully applied to address sequential treatment-decision problems, although the results have been published mostly in economics journals that are not related to healthcare. One advantage of a Markov decision process compared with state-transition models is that it allows extended action space: the possibility of making dynamic comparisons of different treatments over time. Within the context of depression, although existing state-transition models are too basic to evaluate sequential treatment decisions, the assumptions of a Markov decision process could be satisfied. The Markov decision process could therefore serve as a powerful model for optimizing sequential treatment in depression. This would require a sufficiently elaborate state-transition model at the cohort or patient level.</p

    Modeling Paying Behavior in Game Social Networks

    Online gaming is one of the largest industries on the Internet, generating tens of billions of dollars in revenues annually. One core problem in online game is to find and convert free users into paying customers, which is of great importance for the sustainable development of almost all online games. Although much research has been conducted, there are still several challenges that remain largely unsolved: What are the fundamental factors that trigger the users to pay? How does users? paying behavior influence each other in the game social network? How to design a prediction model to recognize those potential users who are likely to pay? In this paper, employing two large online games as the basis, we study how a user becomes a new paying user in the games. In particular, we examine how users' paying behavior influences each other in the game social network. We study this problem from various sociological perspectives including strong/weak ties, social structural diversity and social influence. Based on the discovered patterns, we propose a learning framework to predict potential new payers. The framework can learn a model using features associated with users and then use the social relationships between users to refine the learned model. We test the proposed framework using nearly 50 billion user activities from two real games. Our experiments show that the proposed framework significantly improves the prediction accuracy by up to 3-11% compared to several alternative methods. The study also unveils several intriguing social phenomena from the data. For example, influence indeed exists among users for the paying behavior. The likelihood of a user becoming a new paying user is 5 times higher than chance when he has 5 paying neighbors of strong tie. We have deployed the proposed algorithm into the game, and the Lift_Ratio has been improved up to 196% compared to the prior strategy
