Genome-Based Studies of Marine Microorganisms to Maximize the Diversity of Natural Products Discovery for Medical Treatments
Marine microorganisms are rich source for natural products which play important roles in pharmaceutical industry. Over the past decade, genome-based studies of marine microorganisms have unveiled the tremendous diversity of the producers of natural products and also contributed to the efficiency of harness the strain diversity and chemical diversity, as well as the genetic diversity of marine microorganisms for the rapid discovery and generation of new natural products. In the meantime, genomic information retrieved from marine symbiotic microorganisms can also be employed for the discovery of new medical molecules from yet-unculturable microorganisms. In this paper, the recent progress in the genomic research of marine microorganisms is reviewed; new tools of genome mining as well as the advance in the activation of orphan pathways and metagenomic studies are summarized. Genome-based research of marine microorganisms will maximize the biodiscovery process and solve the problems of supply and sustainability of drug molecules for medical treatments
Coexistence of Localized and Extended States in Disordered Systems
It is commonly believed that Anderson localized states and extended states do
not coexist at the same energy. Here we propose a simple mechanism to achieve
the coexistence of localized and extended states in a band in a class of
disordered quasi-1D and quasi-2D systems. The systems are partially disordered
in a way that a band of extended states always exists, not affected by the
randomness, whereas the states in all other bands become localized. The
extended states can overlap with the localized states both in energy and in
space, achieving the aforementioned coexistence. We demonstrate such
coexistence in disordered multi-chain and multi-layer systems.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Rumor Clarification, Digital Platform, and Stock Movement
Stock return is influenced by information release, dissemination, and acceptance. Rumor clarification is supposed to reduce asymmetric information and abnormal stock return. In this research, we extracted 4134 rumor-clarification pairs from 687,429 postings in social media, and quantified the language used in these messages, along with online firm behaviors, to study the effect of clarifications on stock returns. Our findings include (1) the digitalized rumor clarification messages affect the abnormal returns of the relevant stocks; (2) Such influence can be quantified and measured by the emotion polarity of rumor clarification; (3) Firm’s online clarification behaviors may have no influence on abnormal returns except for the total response number of rumor clarification for a listed company. In particular, investors prefer to trust the clarifications from the companies with frequent online interactive engagements
Clinical Features and Genetic Analysis of 20 Chinese Patients with X-Linked Hyper-IgM Syndrome
X-linked hyper-IgM syndrome (XHIGM) is one type of primary immunodeficiency diseases, resulting from defects in the CD40 ligand/CD40 signaling pathways. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and molecular features of 20 Chinese patients diagnosed and followed up in hospitals affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from 1999 to 2013. The median onset age of these patients was 8.5 months (range: 20 days–21 months). Half of them had positive family histories, with a shorter diagnosis lag. The most common symptoms were recurrent sinopulmonary infections (18 patients, 90%), neutropenia (14 patients, 70%), oral ulcer (13 patients, 65%), and protracted diarrhea (13 patients, 65%). Six patients had BCGitis. Six patients received hematopoietic stem cell transplantations and four of them had immune reconstructions and clinical remissions. Eighteen unique mutations in CD40L gene were identified in these 20 patients from 19 unrelated families, with 12 novel mutations. We compared with reported mutation results and used bioinformatics software to predict the effects of mutations on the target protein. These mutations reflected the heterogeneity of CD40L gene and expanded our understanding of XHIGM
Morphology-Enhanced CAM-Guided SAM for weakly supervised Breast Lesion Segmentation
Breast cancer diagnosis challenges both patients and clinicians, with early
detection being crucial for effective treatment. Ultrasound imaging plays a key
role in this, but its utility is hampered by the need for precise lesion
segmentation-a task that is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address
these challenges, we propose a new framework: a morphology-enhanced, Class
Activation Map (CAM)-guided model, which is optimized using a computer vision
foundation model known as SAM. This innovative framework is specifically
designed for weakly supervised lesion segmentation in early-stage breast
ultrasound images. Our approach uniquely leverages image-level annotations,
which removes the requirement for detailed pixel-level annotation. Initially,
we perform a preliminary segmentation using breast lesion morphology knowledge.
Following this, we accurately localize lesions by extracting semantic
information through a CAM-based heatmap. These two elements are then fused
together, serving as a prompt to guide the SAM in performing refined
segmentation. Subsequently, post-processing techniques are employed to rectify
topological errors made by the SAM. Our method not only simplifies the
segmentation process but also attains accuracy comparable to supervised
learning methods that rely on pixel-level annotation. Our framework achieves a
Dice score of 74.39% on the test set, demonstrating compareable performance
with supervised learning methods. Additionally, it outperforms a supervised
learning model, in terms of the Hausdorff distance, scoring 24.27 compared to
Deeplabv3+'s 32.22. These experimental results showcase its feasibility and
superior performance in integrating weakly supervised learning with SAM. The

Cough Test during Tension-Free Vaginal Tape Procedure in Preventing Postoperative Urinary Retention
Objective. To discuss the practical value of the cough test during the tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure. Methods. In the first group, 41 patients of female stress incontinence received TVT operations which were performed according to the Ulmsten’s method strictly, only that the stress of tape was adjusted in light of the cough test. In the second group, 44 patients of female stress incontinence received TVT operations in which the tape was put under the urethral tract without stress, not adjusted by cough test. Results. The cure rate was 38/41 (92.6%) in the cough test group and 41/44 (93.1%) in the noncough test group; detrusor pressure-uroflow study indicated that there were 11 cases in the obstruction zone in the cough test group while only 3 cases were in the obstruction zone in the noncough test group; 4 cases of urinary retention and 5 cases of voiding dysfunction were found in the cough test group, while difficulties of urination were not found in the non-cough test group. Conclusion. Adjusting the tape stress in accordance with the cough test during the TVT can increase the opportunity of urinary retention or difficulty of urination after operation. So there is no benefit of the cough test during tension-free vaginal tape procedure in preventing post-operative urinary retention
