Focus-Enhanced Scene Text Recognition with Deformable Convolutions
Recently, scene text recognition methods based on deep learning have sprung
up in computer vision area. The existing methods achieved great performances,
but the recognition of irregular text is still challenging due to the various
shapes and distorted patterns. Consider that at the time of reading words in
the real world, normally we will not rectify it in our mind but adjust our
focus and visual fields. Similarly, through utilizing deformable convolutional
layers whose geometric structures are adjustable, we present an enhanced
recognition network without the steps of rectification to deal with irregular
text in this work. A number of experiments have been applied, where the results
on public benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed components
and shows that our method has reached satisfactory performances. The code will

Leukotriene B4, administered via intracerebroventricular injection, attenuates the antigen-induced asthmatic response in sensitized guinea pigs
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite intensive studies focused on the pathophysiology of asthmatic inflammation, little is known about how cross-talk between neuroendocrine and immune systems regulates the inflammatory response during an asthmatic attack. We recently showed corresponding changes of cytokines and leukotriene B<sub>4 </sub>(LTB<sub>4</sub>) in brain and lung tissues of antigen-challenged asthmatic rats. Here, we investigated how LTB<sub>4 </sub>interacts with the neuroendocrine-immune system in regulating antigen-induced asthmatic responses in sensitized guinea pigs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Ovalbumin-sensitized guinea pigs were challenged by inhalation of antigen. Vehicle, LTB<sub>4 </sub>or U75302 (a selective LTB<sub>4 </sub>BLT1 receptor inhibitor) was given via intracerebroventricular injection (i.c.v.) 30 min before challenge. Airway contraction response was evaluated using Penh values before and after antigen challenge. The inflammatory response in lung tissue was evaluated 24 h after challenge. The LTB<sub>4 </sub>content of lung and brain homogenate preparations was detected by reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Plasma levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone (CORT) were measured using ELISA kits.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Antigen challenge impaired pulmonary function and increased inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissue. These responses could be significantly suppressed by LTB<sub>4</sub>, 30 ng i.c.v., in ovalbumin-sensitized guinea pigs. LTB<sub>4 </sub>content of lung and brain homogenates from antigen-challenged guinea pigs was significantly increased. In addition, administration of LTB<sub>4 </sub>via i.c.v. markedly increased CORT and ACTH level in plasma before antigen challenge, and there were further increases in CORT and ACTH levels in plasma after antigen challenge. U75302, 100 ng i.c.v., completely blocked the effects of LTB<sub>4</sub>. In addition, U75302, 100 ng via i.c.v. injection, markedly decreased LTB<sub>4 </sub>content in lung homogenates, but not in brain homogenates.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Increased LTB<sub>4 </sub>levels in brain during asthmatic attacks down-regulates airway contraction response and inflammation through the BLT1 receptor. Stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis by LTB<sub>4 </sub>may result in an increase in systemic glucocorticoids which, in turn, would feed back to suppress the asthmatic response.</p

Alterations of Serum Levels of BDNF-Related miRNAs in Patients with Depression
Depression is a serious and potentially life-threatening mental disorder with unknown etiology. Emerging evidence shows that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and microRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in the etiology of depression. Here this study was aimed to identify and characterize the roles of BDNF and its putative regulatory miRNAs in depression. First, we identified that miR-182 may be a putative miRNA that regulates BDNF levels by bioinformatic studies, and characterized the effects of miR-182 on the BDNF levels using cell-based studies, side by side with miR-132 (a known miRNA that regulates BDNF expression). We showed that treatment of miR-132 and miR-182 respectively decreased the BDNF protein levels in a human neuronal cell model, supporting the regulatory roles of miR-132 and miR-182 on the BDNF expression. Furthermore, we explored the roles of miR-132 and miR-182 on the BDNF levels in depression using human subjects by assessing their serum levels. Compared with the healthy controls, patients with depression showed lower serum BDNF levels (via the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays) and higher serum miR-132 and miR-182 levels (via the real-time PCR). Finally, the Pearson’s (or Spearman’s) correlation coefficient was calculated to study whether there was a relationship among the Self-Rating Depression Scale score, the serum BDNF levels, and serum BDNF-related miRNA levels. Our results revealed that there was a significant negative correlation between the SDS scores and the serum BDNF levels, and a positive correlation between the SDS scores and miR-132 levels. In addition, we found a reverse relationship between the serum BDNF levels and the miR-132/miR-182 levels in depression. Collectively, we provided evidence supporting that miR-182 is a putative BDNF-regulatory miRNA, and suggested that the serum BDNF and its related miRNAs may be utilized as important biomarkers in the diagnosis or as therapeutic targets of depression

There are statistical data indicating that diabetes is a risk factor for Parkinson\u27s disease (PD). Methylglyoxal (MG), a biologically reactive byproduct of glucose metabolism, the levels of which have been shown to be increase in diabetes, reacts with dopamine to form 1-acetyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (ADTIQ); this formation may provide further insight into the connection between PD and diabetes. In this study, we investigated the role of ADTIQ in these two diseases to determine in an aim to enhance our understanding of the link between PD and diabetes. To this end, a cell model of hyperglycemia and a rat model of diabetes were established. Correlation between Drug Compliance and Quality of Life in AIDS Patients under Effects of Nursing Intervention
Objective: Good drug compliance is the significant premise of the therapeutic efficacy and the physically healthy level could be reflected by the quality of life. It will be of great importance in enhancing the drug compliance and the quality of life for patients to firm their confidence in fighting with the disease, cooperate with treatment and prolong the lifetime through researching the nursing intervention model for AIDS patients. Based on the analysis of the effects of nursing intervention on AIDS patients’ drug compliance and quality of life, this report studies the correlation between drug compliance and quality of life in AIDS patients under effects of nursing intervention, so as to provide theoretical basis for offering reasonable scheme of nursing intervention more comprehensively, assess the effect of treatment and improve the entirely healthy level of AIDS patients. Methods: A total of 240 AIDS patients were selected as subjects randomly, who were randomized into control group and intervention group, with 120 patients in each group. Both control group and intervention group were given routine nursing measures, while intervention group was given reasonable nursing intervention measures according to nursing requirements on the basis of routine nursing. Baseline data of patients, data after 3 months of observation and data after 10 months of observation were collected using self-made Antiviral Drug Compliance Questionnaire and World Health Organization Quality of Life with 100 Questions (WHOQOL-100), followed by rank correlation analysis and regression analysis. Results: After 3 months and 10 months of nursing intervention, there was obvious rank correlation between patients’ drug compliance and quality of life in the intervention group. After 10 months of nursing intervention, the effects of drug compliance showed obvious gradual enhancement. As for domains of quality of life, after 3 months of nursing intervention, the rank correlation between drug compliance and physiology domain, independence domain and social relation domain became significant; after 10 months of nursing intervention, the rank correlation became more significant, and the rank correlation between drug compliance and psychology domain and environment domain also became significant. Conclusion: Drug compliance has direct influence on the therapeutic effects of patients, and the quality of life can improve the therapeutic effects of patients through influencing patients’ drug compliance. Flexible motor sequence generation during stereotyped escape responses
Complex animal behaviors arise from a flexible combination of stereotyped motor primitives. Here we use the escape responses of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to study how a nervous system dynamically explores the action space. The initiation of the escape responses is predictable: the animal moves away from a potential threat, a mechanical or thermal stimulus. But the motor sequence and the timing that follow are variable. We report that a feedforward excitation between neurons encoding distinct motor states underlies robust motor sequence generation, while mutual inhibition between these neurons controls the flexibility of timing in a motor sequence. Electrical synapses contribute to feedforward coupling whereas glutamatergic synapses contribute to inhibition. We conclude that C. elegans generates robust and flexible motor sequences by combining an excitatory coupling and a winner-take-all operation via mutual inhibition between motor modules
MiR-143 acts as a tumor suppressor by targeting N-RAS and enhances temozolomide-induced apoptosis in glioma.
Therapeutic applications of microRNAs (miRNAs) in RAS-driven glioma were valuable, but their specific roles and functions have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we firstly report that miR-143 directly targets the neuroblastoma RAS viral oncogene homolog (N-RAS) and functions as a tumor-suppressor in glioma. Overexpression of miR-143 decreased the expression of N-RAS, inhibited PI3K/AKT, MAPK/ERK signaling, and attenuated the accumulation of p65 in nucleus of glioma cells. In human clinical specimens, miR-143 was downregulated where an adverse with N-RAS expression was observed. Furthermore, overexpression of miR-143 decreased glioma cell migration, invasion, tube formation and slowed tumor growth and angiogenesis in a manner associated with N-RAS downregulation in vitro and in vivo. Finally, miR-143 also sensitizes glioma cells to temozolomide (TMZ),the first-line drug for glioma treatment. Taken together, for the first time, our results demonstrate that miR-143 plays a significant role in inactivating the RAS signaling pathway through the inhibition of N-RAS, which may provide a novel therapeutic strategy for treatment of glioma and other RAS-driven cancers

Abstract Background This population-based study was designed to investigate whether consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is associated with lower serum total testosterone concentration in men 20–39 years old. Methods All data for this study were retrieved from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2012. The primary outcome was serum testosterone concentration, and main independent variable was SSB intake. Other variables included age, race/ethnicity, poverty/income ratio, body mass index (BMI), serum cotinine, heavy drinking, and physical activity. Results Among all subjects (N = 545), 486 (90.4%) had normal testosterone levels (defined as ≥231 ng/dL) and 59 (9.6%) had low testosterone levels (defined as < 231 ng/dL). Multivariate logistic regression revealed the odds of low testosterone was significantly greater with increasing SSB consumption (Q4 [≥442 kcal/day] vs. Q1 [≤137 kcal/day]), adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.29, p = 0.041]. After adjusting for possible confounding variables, BMI was an independent risk factor for low testosterone level; subjects with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 had a higher risk of having a low testosterone level than those with BMI < 25 kg/m2 (aOR = 3.68, p = 0.044). Conclusion SSB consumption is significantly associated with low serum testosterone in men 20–39 years old in the United States
