    Parallel Viterbi Decoding Implementation by Multi-microprocessors

    The Viterbi algorithm is a well-established technique for channel and source decoding in high performance digital communication systems. However, excessive time consumption makes it difficult to design an efficient highspeed decoder for practical application. The central unit of a Viterbi decoder is a data-dependent feedback loop which performs an add-compare-select (ACS) operation. This nonlinear recurrence is the bottleneck for a high-speed parallel implementation. This paper describes the implementation of parallel Viterbi algorithm by multi-microprocessors. Internal computations are performed in a parallel fashion. The use of microprocessors allows low-cost implementation with moderate complexity. An organization network, separate memory blocks and programs provide proper operation. For a fixed processing speed of given hardware parallel Viterbi decoding allows a linear speed up in the throughput rate by a linear increase in hardware complexity

    Clinical features and surgical effect of vireoretinal diseases with contralateral blindness

    AIM: To investigate the clinical characteristics and surgical results of vireoretinal diseases in 68 patients with contralateral blindness(solitary eye). <p>METHODS: A total of 68 patients(68 eyes)with contralateral blindness were enrolled in this retrospective consecutive study. The clinical characteristics, surgical procedures and temponade materials chosen, preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, complications and prognosis were analyzed. The follow-up ranged from 4 months to 5 years, with an average of(11.30±9.57)months. At the last follow-up, the surgical effects were evaluated.<p>RESULTS:After operation, visual acuity increased significantly. The number of eyes with vision of 0.05 or better increased from 22 eyes(32.4%)preoperative to 60 eyes(88.2%)postoperative, and that of 0.3 or better from 3 eyes(4.4%)to 37 eyes(54.4%). The best-corrected visual acuity before and after surgery also differed significantly(<i>t</i>=8.986, <i>P<</i>0.01). <p>CONCLUSION: With vitreoretinal surgery, visual impairment or loss due to vitreoretinal diseases can be avoided in most patients with contralateral blindness

    A duplex real-time RT-PCR assay for detecting H5N1 avian influenza virus and pandemic H1N1 influenza virus

    A duplex real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was improved for simultaneous detection of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus and pandemic H1N1 (2009) influenza virus, which is suitable for early diagnosis of influenza-like patients and for epidemiological surveillance. The sensitivity of this duplex real-time RT-PCR assay was 0.02 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) for H5N1 and 0.2 TCID50 for the pandemic H1N1, which was the same as that of each single-target RT-PCR for pandemic H1N1 and even more sensitive for H5N1 with the same primers and probes. No cross reactivity of detecting other subtype influenza viruses or respiratory tract viruses was observed. Two hundred and thirty-six clinical specimens were tested by comparing with single real-time RT-PCR and result from the duplex assay was 100% consistent with the results of single real-time RT-PCR and sequence analysis

    Mechanistic analysis of loess landslide reactivation in northern Shaanxi based on coupled numerical modeling of hydrological processes and stress strain evolution: A case study of the Erzhuangkelandslide in Yan’an

    The Erzhuangke landslide is a typical landslide affected by the rainy season. Rainfall changes the seepage pattern with the pre-existing landslide, weakening matric suction and soil shear strength, leading to the formation of tension cracks internally. This triggers overall sliding and localized extensive deformations. Existing studies seldom considers the interaction between the seepage field and stress field of the Erzhuangke landslide. Therefore, based on the actual engineering geological disaster scenarios, supported by on-site monitoring data and terrain physical parameters, a geometric computational model is established, and hydraulic coupled numerical simulations are conducted. By investigating variations in saturation and pore pressure within the landslide, the paper explores the rainfall infiltration patterns. It examines the impact of rainfall intensity on landslide reactivation from the perspective of stress displacement. In addition, in order to validate the accuracy and feasibility of the method, selected measurement points from the landslide are matched with corresponding positions in the numerical model. Comparative analysis is performed on displacement, soil pressure, and saturation aspects, confirming that the numerical model effectively reflects the actual situation. Through coupling numerical simulations and the study of the reactivation mechanism of the old landslide under rainfall conditions, the paper interprets field data, analyzes the reactivation process, and provides theoretical foundations and technical guidance for subsequent engineering early warning and disaster mitigation works

    Effect of individualized positive end-expiratory pressure based on electrical impedance tomography guidance on pulmonary ventilation distribution in patients who receive abdominal thermal perfusion chemotherapy

    BackgroundElectrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been shown to be useful in guiding individual positive end-expiratory pressure titration for patients with mechanical ventilation. However, the appropriate positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level and whether the individualized PEEP needs to be adjusted during long-term surgery (&gt;6 h) were unknown. Meanwhile, the effect of individualized PEEP on the distribution of pulmonary ventilation in patients who receive abdominal thermoperfusion chemotherapy is unknown. The primary aim of this study was to observe the effect of EIT-guided PEEP on the distribution of pulmonary ventilation in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hot intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The secondary aim was to analyze their effect on postoperative pulmonary complications.MethodsA total of 48 patients were recruited and randomly divided into two groups, with 24 patients in each group. For the control group (group A), PEEP was set at 5 cm H2O, while in the EIT group (group B), individual PEEP was titrated and adjusted every 2 h with EIT guidance. Ventilation distribution, respiratory/circulation parameters, and PPC incidence were compared between the two groups.ResultsThe average individualized PEEP was 10.3 ± 1.5 cm H2O, 10.2 ± 1.6 cm H2O, 10.1 ± 1.8 cm H2O, and 9.7 ± 2.1 cm H2O at 5 min, 2 h, 4 h, and 6 h after tracheal intubation during CRS + HIPEC. Individualized PEEP was correlated with ventilation distribution in the regions of interest (ROI) 1 and ROI 3 at 4 h mechanical ventilation and ROI 1 at 6 h mechanical ventilation. The ventilation distribution under individualized PEEP was back-shifted for 6 h but moved to the control group’s ventral side under PEEP 5 cm H2O. The respiratory and circulatory function indicators were both acceptable either under individualized PEEP or PEEP 5 cm H2O. The incidence of total PPCs was significantly lower under individualized PEEP (66.7%) than PEEP 5 cm H2O (37.5%) for patients with CRS + HIPEC.ConclusionThe appropriate individualized PEEP was stable at approximately 10 cm H2O during 6 h for patients with CRS + HIPEC, along with better ventilation distribution and a lower total PPC incidence than the fixed PEEP of 5 cm H2O.Clinical trial registration: identifier ChiCTR1900023897

    A point mutation in the DNA-binding domain of HPV-2 E2 protein increases its DNA-binding capacity and reverses its transcriptional regulatory activity on the viral early promoter

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The human papillomavirus (HPV) E2 protein is a multifunctional DNA-binding protein. The transcriptional activity of HPV E2 is mediated by binding to its specific binding sites in the upstream regulatory region of the HPV genomes. Previously we reported a HPV-2 variant from a verrucae vulgaris patient with huge extensive clustered cutaneous, which have five point mutations in its E2 ORF, L118S, S235P, Y287H, S293R and A338V. Under the control of HPV-2 LCR, co-expression of the mutated HPV E2 induced an increased activity on the viral early promoter. In the present study, a series of mammalian expression plasmids encoding E2 proteins with one to five amino acid (aa) substitutions for these mutations were constructed and transfected into HeLa, C33A and SiHa cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>CAT expression assays indicated that the enhanced promoter activity was due to the co-expressions of the E2 constructs containing A338V mutation within the DNA-binding domain. Western blots analysis demonstrated that the transiently transfected E2 expressing plasmids, regardless of prototype or the A338V mutant, were continuously expressed in the cells. To study the effect of E2 mutations on its DNA-binding activity, a serial of recombinant E2 proteins with various lengths were expressed and purified. Electrophoresis mobility shift assays (EMSA) showed that the binding affinity of E2 protein with A338V mutation to both an artificial probe with two E2 binding sites or HPV-2 and HPV-16 promoter-proximal LCR sequences were significantly stronger than that of the HPV-2 prototype E2. Furthermore, co-expression of the construct containing A338V mutant exhibited increased activities on heterologous HPV-16 early promoter P97 than that of prototype E2.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results suggest that the mutation from Ala to Val at aa 338 is critical for E2 DNA-binding and its transcriptional regulation.</p
