    A Novel Wide-Area Backup Protection Based on Fault Component Current Distribution and Improved Evidence Theory

    In order to solve the problems of the existing wide-area backup protection (WABP) algorithms, the paper proposes a novel WABP algorithm based on the distribution characteristics of fault component current and improved Dempster/Shafer (D-S) evidence theory. When a fault occurs, slave substations transmit to master station the amplitudes of fault component currents of transmission lines which are the closest to fault element. Then master substation identifies suspicious faulty lines according to the distribution characteristics of fault component current. After that, the master substation will identify the actual faulty line with improved D-S evidence theory based on the action states of traditional protections and direction components of these suspicious faulty lines. The simulation examples based on IEEE 10-generator-39-bus system show that the proposed WABP algorithm has an excellent performance. The algorithm has low requirement of sampling synchronization, small wide-area communication flow, and high fault tolerance

    The efficacy of botulinum toxin type A treatment and surgery for acute acquired comitant esotropia

    AimTo compare the long-term efficiency of botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) injection and surgery on acute acquired comitant esotropia (AACE).MethodsThis retrospective study enrolled patients with AACE from January 2020 to August 2022. The horizontal angle of deviation pre- and post-treatment was measured. Deviations in BTXA and surgical treatment were compared. The BTXA group was divided into adequate treatment (AT) and inadequate treatment (inAT) subgroup based on the deviation of no more than 4 prism diopters (at near and distance) or temporary exotropia at the 2 week follow-up. The two subgroups were compared to determine the long-term efficacy of BTXA treatment.ResultsNinety-two patients with AACE were included. Follow-up was 6 months. The deviations of the surgery and BTXA group were significantly smaller at the 6 month follow-up than at pre-treatment (p < 0.001). The deviation before treatment in the surgery group was larger than in the BTXA groups (p < 0.001) but smaller at the 6 month follow-up (p < 0.001). The deviation was similar in the AT-BTXA and inAT-BTXA subgroups before treatment (p = 0.322 for distance and p = 0.051 for near) but smaller in the AT-BTXA subgroup at 6 month follow-up (p < 0.001 for near and distance).ConclusionSurgery and BTXA successfully treat AACE. Surgery has a more precise and lasting therapeutic effect than BTXA. AACE patients adequately treated with BTXA and with deviations of no more than 4 prism diopters at 2 weeks follow-up had better outcomes

    Expression of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Capsid Proteins in Silkworm-Baculovirus Expression System and Its Utilization as a Subunit Vaccine

    Background: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of livestock that causes severe economic loss in susceptible cloven-hoofed animals. Although the traditional inactivated vaccine has been proved effective, it may lead to a new outbreak of FMD because of either incomplete inactivation of FMDV or the escape of live virus from vaccine production workshop. Thus, it is urgent to develop a novel FMDV vaccine that is safer, more effective and more economical than traditional vaccines. Methodology and Principal Findings: A recombinant silkworm baculovirus Bm-P12A3C which contained the intact P1-2A and 3C protease coding regions of FMDV Asia 1/HNK/CHA/05 was developed. Indirect immunofluorescence test and sandwich-ELISA were used to verify that Bm-P12A3C could express the target cassette. Expression products from silkworm were diluted to 30 folds and used as antigen to immunize cattle. Specific antibody was induced in all vaccinated animals. After challenge with virulent homologous virus, four of the five animals were completely protected, and clinical symptoms were alleviated and delayed in the remaining one. Furthermore, a PD50 (50 % bovine protective dose) test was performed to assess the bovine potency of the subunit vaccine. The result showed the subunit vaccine could achieve 6.34 PD50 per dose

    Slug enhances invasion ability of pancreatic cancer cells through upregulation of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and actin cytoskeleton remodeling

    Slug, a member of the Snail family of transcription factors, has a crucial role in the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by suppressing several epithelial markers and adhesion molecules, including E-cadherin. A recent study demonstrated that no relationship exists between Slug and E-cadherin in pancreatic cancer. Another study showed that in malignant mesothelioma effusions Slug was associated with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, but that there was no association with E-cadherin. F-ascin is an actin-bundling protein involved in filopodia assembly and cancer invasion and metastasis of multiple epithelial cancer types. In this study, we investigated Slug, E-cadherin, and MMP-9 expression using immunohistochemistry in 60 patients with pancreatic cancer and their correlation with carcinoma invasion and metastasis. Additionally, we observed the effects of Slug on invasion and metastasis in the pancreatic cancer cell line PANC-1. Alterations in Slug, MMP-9, and E-cadherin were determined by RT-PCR, western blot, and immunohistochemistry. Alterations in MMP-9 and F-actin cytoskeleton were determined by immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry (FCM), or gelatin zymography. Slug, E-cadherin, and MMP-9 expression in pancreatic cancer was significantly associated with lymph node metastases and we found a significant correlation between Slug and MMP-9 expression; however, no significant correlation was observed between Slug and E-cadherin expression. Slug transfection significantly increased invasion and metastasis in PANC-1 cells and orthotopic tumor of mouse in vivo, and significantly upregulated and activated MMP-9; however, there was no effect on E-cadherin expression. Slug promoted the formation of lamelliopodia or filopodia in PANC-1 cells. The intracellular F-actin and MMP-9 was increased and relocated to the front of the extending pseudopodia from the perinuclear pool in Slug-transfected PANC-1 cells. These results suggest that Slug promotes migration and invasion of PANC-1 cells, which may correlate with the reorganization of MMP-9 and remodeling of the F-actin cytoskeleton, but not with E-cadherin expression

    Quality Evaluation Based on Multivariate Statistical Methods

    Quality prediction models are constructed based on multivariate statistical methods, including ordinary least squares regression (OLSR), principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares regression (PLSR), and modified partial least squares regression (MPLSR). The prediction model constructed by MPLSR achieves superior results, compared with the other three methods from both aspects of fitting efficiency and prediction ability. Based on it, further research is dedicated to selecting key variables to directly predict the product quality with satisfactory performance. The prediction models presented are more efficient than tradition ones and can be useful to support human experts in the evaluation and classification of the product quality. The effectiveness of the quality prediction models is finally illustrated and verified based on the practical data set of the red wine

    Study on support vector machine-based fault detection in Tennessee Eastman process

    This paper investigates the proficiency of support vector machine (SVM) using datasets generated by Tennessee Eastman process simulation for fault detection. Due to its excellent performance in generalization, the classification performance of SVM is satisfactory. SVM algorithm combined with kernel function has the nonlinear attribute and can better handle the case where samples and attributes are massive. In addition, with forehand optimizing the parameters using the cross-validation technique, SVM can produce high accuracy in fault detection. Therefore, there is no need to deal with original data or refer to other algorithms, making the classification problem simple to handle. In order to further illustrate the efficiency, an industrial benchmark of Tennessee Eastman (TE) process is utilized with the SVM algorithm and PLS algorithm, respectively. By comparing the indices of detection performance, the SVM technique shows superior fault detection ability to the PLS algorithm. © 2014 Shen Yin et al
