    The Spite Dilemma Revisited: Comparison between Chinese and Japanese

    This paper studies Chinese choice behavior in the provision of public goods via the voluntary contribution mechanism. The laboratory experiment conducted in China adopts the same design as the one used in Saijo and Nakamura (1995), i.e. either cooperating (full contribution) or free riding (no contribution) is predicted as the unique Nash equilibrium with a high (larger than one) or low (smaller than one) marginal return of contribution. Comparing the results of Chinese subjects with their Japanese counterparts, we find significant differences between these two countries in terms of their choice behavior, despite the similarities in their cultures and the proximity in geographical positions. Japanese subjects are more likely to act spitefully, and, in contrast, Chinese subjects are more likely to perform cooperatively. In addition, concerning the deviations from the Nash equilibria with different marginal returns, the statistical results indicate that Chinese subjects behave more consistent with the theoretical prediction in the high marginal return case, while Japanese choice behavior seems less different from the theoretical expectation in the low marginal return case.Voluntary contribution mechanism, Spite dilemma, Chinese, Japanese

    Virasoro Generators in the Fibonacci Model Tensor Network -- Tackling Finite Size Effects

    In this paper, we extend the method implementing Virasoro operators in a tensor network we proposed in arXiv:2205.04500 and test it on the Fibonacci model, which is known to suffer from far more finite size effects. To pick up the "seed" state that would flow to the stress tensor in the thermodynamic limit, we make use of the topological idempotent that projects the transfer matrix to the trivial sector. Combined with an optimization method, the seed state can be identified. We demonstrate that the descendant states in the Fibonacci model can be correctly generated with this approximate stress tensor, giving further evidence that the method applies more generally.Comment: 7+7 pages, 3+5 figure

    Virasoro and Kac-Moody algebra in generic tensor network representations of 2d critical lattice partition functions

    In this paper, we propose a general implementation of the Virasoro generators and Kac-Moody currents in generic tensor network representations of 2-dimensional critical lattice models. Our proposal works even when a quantum Hamiltonian of the lattice model is not available, which is the case in many numerical computations involving numerical blockings. We tested our proposal on the 2d Ising model, and also the dimer model, which works to high accuracy even with a fairly small system size. Our method makes use of eigenstates of a small cylinder to generate descendant states in a larger cylinder, suggesting some intricate algebraic relations between lattice of different sizes.Comment: 5+11 pages, 5+4 figure

    Evaluation of cloned cells, animal model, and ATRA sensitivity of human testicular yolk sac tumor

    The testicular yolk sac tumor (TYST) is the most common neoplasm originated from germ cells differentiated abnormally, a major part of pediatric malignant testicular tumors. The present study aimed at developing and validating the in vitro and vivo models of TYST and evaluating the sensitivity of TYST to treatments, by cloning human TYST cells and investigating the histology, ultra-structure, growth kinetics and expression of specific proteins of cloned cells. We found biological characteristics of cloned TYST cells were similar to the yolk sac tumor and differentiated from the columnar to glandular-like or goblet cells-like cells. Chromosomes for tumor identification in each passage met nature of the primary tumor. TYST cells were more sensitive to all-trans-retinoic acid which had significantly inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. Cisplatin induced apoptosis of TYST cells through the activation of p53 expression and down-regulation of Bcl- expression. Thus, we believe that cloned TYST cells and the animal model developed here are useful to understand the molecular mechanism of TYST cells and develop potential therapies for human TYST

    The Meq oncoprotein of Marek's disease virus interacts with p53 and inhibits its transcriptional and apoptotic activities

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Marek's disease virus (MDV) is an oncogenic herpesvirus, which causes malignant lymphoma in chickens. The Meq protein of MDV, which is expressed abundantly in MDV-infected cells and in Marek's disease (MD) tumor cells, functions as a transcriptional activator and has been proposed to play an important role in oncogenic transformation. Preliminary studies demonstrated that Meq is able to bind p53 <it>in vitro</it>, as demonstrated using a protein-binding assay. This observation prompted us to examine whether the interaction between Meq and p53 occurs in cells, and to investigate the biological significance of this interaction.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We confirmed first that Meq interacted directly with p53 using a yeast two-hybrid assay and an immunoprecipitation assay, and we investigated the biological significance of this interaction subsequently. Exogenous expression of Meq resulted in the inhibition of p53-mediated transcriptional activity and apoptosis, as analyzed using a p53 luciferase reporter assay and a TUNEL assay. The inhibitory effect of Meq on transcriptional activity mediated by p53 was dependent on the physical interaction between these two proteins, because a Meq deletion mutant that lacked the p53-binding region lost the ability to inhibit p53-mediated transcriptional activity and apoptosis. The Meq variants L-Meq and S-Meq, but not VS-Meq and ∆Meq, which were expressed in MD tumor cells and MDV-infected cells, exerted an inhibitory effect on p53 transcriptional activity. In addition, ∆Meq was found to act as a negative regulator of Meq.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The Meq oncoprotein interacts directly with p53 and inhibits p53-mediated transcriptional activity and apoptosis. These findings provide valuable insight into the molecular basis for the function of Meq in MDV oncogenesis.</p

    Stability analysis and numerical simulation of foundation in old goaf under building load

    This study comprehensively analyzes the safety and stability of old goaf under construction engineering based on specific projects using a variety of research methods. The Beijing Mentougou mining area is used as the research background. The methods of field investigation, laboratory testing, engineering drilling, geophysical exploration, theoretical calculation, and numerical simulation are combined to quantitatively analyze the stability of the foundation and ground buildings in old goaf. The influence depth of the building load and height of the caving crack zone are calculated using the “three-zone theory” to judge if the goaf is at risk of activation. Further simulation is conducted using two types of finite element analysis software, which increases the reliability of the numerical analysis. The results demonstrate that uneven subsidence of approximately 100 mm occurs in the buildings and ground surface, and subsidence of approximately 50 mm occurs in the goaf roof. It is also proven that goaf affects the stability of the surrounding rock and building foundation. Finally, a goaf treatment scheme is proposed. The treatment effect is found to be remarkable through field tests and numerical simulations, ensuring the safety and stability of a building foundation. The combination of theoretical calculation and numerical simulation can effectively evaluate the safety and stability of the project under load, and has a strong promotion and application value. The research results meet the needs of engineering practice, and provide a great reference value for the rational utilization of the land above the old goaf in the Mentougou district of Beijing and similar mining cities, which has a good theoretical significance and application prospect
