    Tooth Loss Is Associated With Increased Risk of Dementia and With a Dose-Response Relationship

    Objective: Both tooth loss and dementia are age-related and frequently-occurring diseases. Increasing attention has been given to explore the pathogenesis related to oral-brain function disorders. The present study was performed to evaluate the association between tooth loss and dementia through a dose-response meta-analysis.Methods: Relevant cohort studies were searched from online databases up until June 20, 2018, which examined the association between tooth loss and the risk of dementia. Literature selection according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, as well as data extraction from included studies were completed independently by two reviewers. Data syntheses in this meta-analysis were performed using Stata 12.0 software.Results: A total of 8 cohort studies were included, containing a total of 14,362 samples and 2,072 dementia patients. The result of the meta-analysis indicated that patients with tooth loss faced a 1.34 times greater risk of developing dementia (RR = 1.34,95% CI = 1.19-1.51). The result from this dose-response meta-analysis in a linear model, suggested that every missed tooth might increase the risk of dementia by 1.01 times (RR = 1.01, 95%CI = 1.00-1.02). Further subgroup analyses pointed out that tooth loss patients without dentures may have a higher risk of dementia than those with dentures (with denture: RR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.87-1.10; without denture: RR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.19-1.97); at the same time, the study design, study area and education level of the study participants, might also have some effect on the results.Conclusions: Tooth loss may be a risk factor for the development of dementia. In addition, there is a dose-response relationship with the increase of missing teeth

    目的  调查青海省玉树县震后转移安置学生的肠道寄生虫感染情况。方法  粪便直接涂片法检查虫卵。结果  512份粪便样品中,寄生虫阳性粪便31份,感染率为6.05%。其中,结肠内阿米巴20例,感染率为3.91%;蓝氏贾第鞭毛虫8例,感染率为1.56%;蛔虫3例,感染率0.59%。结论  玉树的学生肠道寄生虫的感染率均不高于全国平均水平。Objective: To investigate the status of human parasites in children who have been evacuated here from Yushu after earthquake. Methods: Detect the eggs from smear feces samples. Results: 512 stool samples were collected and examined by microscope. The total infection rate was 6.05%, where the infection rate for entamoeba coli Grassi was 3.91%, Giardia lamblia stile was 1.56%, Ascaris Lumbricoides was 0.59%. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the infection rate of human parasites is not higher than normal rate in China

    Common Features in Electronic Structure of the Fe-Based Layered Superconductors from Photoemission Spectroscopy

    High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting LaOFeAs parent compound and various superconducting R(O1-xFx)FeAs (R=La, Ce and Pr) compounds. We found that the parent LaOFeAs compound shows a metallic character. Through extensive measurements, we have identified several common features in the electronic structure of these Fe-based compounds: (1). 0.2 eV feature in the valence band; (2). A universal 13~16 meV feature; (3). A clear Fermi cutoff showing zero leading-edge shift in the superconducting state;(4). Lack of superconducting coherence peak(s); (5). Near EF spectral weight suppression with decreasing temperature. These universal features can provide important information about band structure, superconducting gap and pseudogap in these Fe-based materials.Comment: 5 pages,4 figure

    Susceptibility of kuruma shrimp to the infection with Decapod iridescent virus 1

    Infection with Decapod iridescent virus 1 (iDIV1), an important emerging disease of shrimps and crabs, has been included in the Quarterly Aquatic Animal Disease Report (QAAD) by the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) and listed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). China has classified iDIV1 as a Class II animal pandemic disease. In the present study, to determine the susceptibility of Penaeus japonicus to Decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1), healthy kuruma shrimp were artificially infected with DIV1 (isolate SHIV 20141215) by per os (the pathway that mimics natural transmission) and intramuscular injection (invasive pathway). The infected P. japonicus showed clinical signs such as anorexia, retardation, evident reddish body, swollen and whitish lymphoid organs, and mortalities of almost 100%. Real-time PCR showed that all the challenged individuals by per os or intramuscular routes were DIV1-positive with an average virus load between 10(9.09 ± 0.58) and 10(8.94 ± 0.45) copies/μg-DNA, respectively. Histological examination revealed karyopyknosis, and eosinophilic inclusions and minute basophilic stains were combined in lymphoid organs, hematopoietic tissue and gills of diseased individuals. In addition, lymphoid organs showed disorganization of the tubule matrix. In situ DIG-labeling loop-mediated isothermal amplification (ISDL) also demonstrated the presence of DIV1 signals existed in lymphoid organs, hemopoietic tissue, gills, epithelial tissue, hepatopancreas and muscle. Ultrathin sections examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the presence of DIV1 virions, the virogenic stroma, and the nucleocapsid production process in infected cells. In addition, pathogen surveillance of cultured samples showed that the DIV1 detection rate of farmed P. japonicus samples from five coastal provinces in China was 5.3% (9/157) in 2022. The results mentioned above support that P. japonicus is a newly confirmed susceptible host for DIV1, enhancing the pathogen ecological understanding of pathogens and giving more support for developing DIV1 preventive and control strategies
