A new decay mode of higher charmonium

We calculate the ΛcΛˉc\Lambda_c\bar{\Lambda}_c partial decay width of the excited vector charmonium states around 4.6 GeV with the quark pair creation model. We find that the partial decay width of the ΛcΛˉc\Lambda_c\bar{\Lambda}_c mode can reach up to several MeV for ψ(4S, 5S, 6S)\psi(4S,~5S,~6S). In contrast, the partial ΛcΛˉc\Lambda_c\bar{\Lambda}_c decay width of the states ψ(3D, 4D, 5D)\psi(3D,~4D,~5D) is less than one MeV. If the enhancement Y(4630)Y(4630) reported by the Belle Collaboration in ΛcΛˉc\Lambda_c\bar{\Lambda}_c invariant-mass distribution is the same structure as Y(4660)Y(4660), the Y(4660)Y(4660) resonance is most likely to be a SS-wave charmonium state.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Clonorchis sinensis </it>is a zoonotic parasite causing clonorchiasis-associated human disease such as biliary calculi, cholecystitis, liver cirrhosis, and it is currently classified as carcinogenic to humans for cholangiocarcinoma. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding, regulating small RNA molecules which are essential for the complex life cycles of parasites and are involved in parasitic infections. To identify and characterize miRNAs expressed in adult <it>C. sinensis </it>residing chronically in the biliary tract, we developed an integrative approach combining deep sequencing and bioinformatic predictions with stem-loop real-time PCR analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we report the use of this approach to identify and clone 6 new and 62,512 conserved <it>C. sinensis </it>miRNAs which belonged to 284 families. There was strong bias on families, family members and sequence nucleotides in <it>C. sinensis</it>. Uracil was the dominant nucleotide, particularly at positions 1, 14 and 22, which were located approximately at the beginning, middle and end of conserved miRNAs. There was no significant "seed region" at the first and ninth positions which were commonly found in human, animals and plants. Categorization of conserved miRNAs indicated that miRNAs of <it>C. sinensis </it>were still innovated and concentrated along three branches of the phylogenetic tree leading to bilaterians, insects and coelomates. There were two miRNA strategies in <it>C. sinensis </it>for its parasitic life: keeping a large category of miRNA families of different animals and keeping stringent conserved seed regions with high active innovation in other places of miRNAs mainly in the middle and the end, which were perfect for the parasite to perform its complex life style and for host changes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present study represented the first large scale characterization of <it>C. sinensis </it>miRNAs, which have implications for understanding the complex biology of this zoonotic parasite, as well as miRNA studies of other related species such as <it>Opisthorchis viverrini </it>and <it>Opisthorchis felineus </it>of human and animal health significance.</p

Objective: To investigate the correlation between periodontal disease and breast cancer.Materials and Methods: PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were searched up to February 8, 2018 for observational studies examining the association between periodontal disease and breast cancer. Study selection was conducted according to predesigned eligibility criteria, and two authors independently extracted data from included studies. Meta-analysis was performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis v2 software and risk estimates were calculated as relative risks (RRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs).Results: A total of 11 study were included. Meta-analysis indicated that periodontal disease significantly increased the risk of breast cancer by 1.22-fold (RR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.06–1.40). Amongst participants with periodontal patients and a history of periodontal therapy, the risk of developing breast cancer was not significant (RR = 1.23; 95% CI = 0.95–1.60). The association results between periodontal diseases and breast cancer were found to be robust, as evident in the leave-one-out sensitivity analysis. Conclusions: Periodontal disease may be a potential risk factor for the development of breast cancer among women, and thus effective periodontal therapy may present as a valuable preventive measure against breast cancer

The association of a single nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region of the LAMA1 gene with susceptibility to Chinese high myopia

Purpose: High myopia is a severe hereditary ocular disease leading to blindness. LAMA1 (alpha subunit of laminin) is a promising candidate gene for high myopia present in the MYP2 (myopia 2) region. The purpose of this study was to determine if high myopia is associated with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variants in LAMA1 in Chinese subjects. Methods: Ninety-seven Chinese subjects with high myopia and ethnically and sexually matched 103 normal controls were enrolled. Genomic DNA was prepared from peripheral blood. The 5 SNPs of LAMA1 were analyzed using PCR and SNaPshot. Allele frequencies were tested for Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium. The genotype and allele frequencies were evaluated using the χ2 tests or the Fisher exact tests. Results: One of the 5 SNPs showed a significant difference between patients and control subjects (rs2089760: pgenotype=0.005, pallel=0.003). There were no statistically significant differences between patients and control subjects for the other four SNPs: rs566655, rs11664063, rs607230, and rs3810046. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the polymorphism of rs2089760, located in the promoter region of LAMA1, may be associated with high myopia in the Chinese population and should be investigated further. © 2011 Molecular Vision.link_to_subscribed_fulltex

Sodium Hydrosulfide Relieves Neuropathic Pain in Chronic Constriction Injured Rats

Aberrant neuronal activity in injured peripheral nerves is believed to be an important factor in the development of neuropathic pain (NPP). Channel protein pCREB of that activity has been shown to mitigate the onset of associated molecular events in the nervous system, and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) could inhibit the expression of pCREB. However, whether NaHS could relieve the pain, it needs further experimental research. Furthermore, the clinical potential that NaHS was used to relieve pain was limited so it would be required. To address these issues, the rats of sciatic nerve chronic constriction injury (CCI) were given intraperitoneal injection of NaHS containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The experimental results showed that NaHS inhibited the reduction of paw withdrawal thermal latency (PWTL), mechanical withdrawal threshold (MWT), and the level of pCREB in CCI rats in a dose-dependent manner and they were greatly decreased in NaHSM group (P < 0.05). NaHS alleviates chronic neuropathic pain by inhibiting expression of pCREB in the spinal cord of Sprague-Dawley rats

The effect of metabolic syndrome on postoperative complications and long-term survival of patients with colorectal cancer

BackgroundMetabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with poor prognosis in many cancers. However, the relationship between metabolic syndrome and overall survival (OS) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. We aimed to comprehensively analyze whether MetS could affect postoperative complications and long-term survival in patients with CRC.MethodsWe included patients who underwent CRC resection at our center between January 2016 and December 2018. Bias was reduced through propensity score matching analysis. Patients with CRC were divided into the MetS and non-MetS groups based on whether they had MetS. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify risk factors affecting OS.ResultsWe included 268 patients; among them, 120 were included for further analysis after propensity score matching. There were no significant between-group differences in the clinicopathological features after matching. Compared with the non-MetS group, the MetS group had a shorter OS (P = 0.027); however, there was no significant between-group difference in postoperative complications. Multivariate analysis revealed that MetS (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.997, P = 0.042), tumor-node-metastasis stage (HR = 2.422, P = 0.003), and intestinal obstruction (HR = 2.761, P = 0.010) were independent risk factors for OS.ConclusionsMetS affects the long-term survival of patients with CRC without affecting postoperative complications

Associations between impulsivity, aggression, and suicide in Chinese college students

BACKGROUND: Although there are accumulating data regarding the epidemiology of suicide in China, there are meager data on suicidal ideation and attempts among college students. Interestingly, elevated impulsivity is thought to facilitate the transition from suicidal thoughts to suicidal behavior. Therefore, the objective of this research was to identify the associations between suicide and the personality factors of impulsivity and aggression. METHODS: This study’s sampling method employed stratified random cluster sampling. A multi-stage stratified sampling procedure was used to select participants (n = 5,245). We conducted structured interviews regarding a range of socio-demographic characteristics and suicidal morbidity. The Patient Health Questionnaire depression module (PHQ-9) was used to acquire the information about thoughts of being better off dead or hurting themselves in some ways during the past two weeks. The impulsivity symptoms in this study were assessed with the BIS-11-CH (i.e., the Chinese version of the BIS-11), and the Aggressive symptoms were assessed with the BAQ. The statistical package for social science (SPSS) v.13.0 program (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used for statistical analysis. Socio-demographic variables such as ethnic and gender were compared between groups, through the use of χ(2) tests. The nonparametric test (k Independent Sample test, Kruskal-Wallis H) was performed to determine differences between the personality factors of impulsivity and aggression and suicide. RESULTS: In total, 9.1% (n = 479) of the 5,245 students reported they have ever thought about committing suicide; and 1% (n = 51) reported a history of attempted suicide (attempters). The analyses detected significant differences in scores on cognitive impulsivity (p < 0.01), when comparing individuals who only had suicidal ideation and individuals who had attempted suicide. Moreover, significant differences were found between ideators only and attempters on scores of self-oriented attack (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Suicidal ideation is prevalent among Chinese university students. Students with high aggression scores were more susceptible to committing suicide. Scores on self-oriented attack and cognitive impulsivity may be important factors for differentially predicting suicide ideation and suicide attempts
