Effects of hydrodynamic cavitation on physicochemical structure and emulsifying properties of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) myofibrillar protein
The purpose of this research was to explore the different hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) times (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 min; power 550 W, pressure 0.14 MPa) on the emulsifying properties of tilapia myofibrillar protein (TMP). Results of pH, particle size, turbidity, solubility, surface hydrophobicity, and reactive sulfhydryl (SH) group indicated that HC changed the structure of TMP, as confirmed by the findings of intrinsic fluorescence and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. Furthermore, HC increased the emulsifying activity index (EAI) significantly (P < 0.05) and changed the emulsifying stability index (ESI), droplet size, and rheology of TMP emulsions. Notably, compared with control group, the 10-min HC significantly decreased particle size and turbidity but increased solubility (P < 0.05), resulting in accelerated diffusion of TMP in the emulsion. The prepared TMP emulsion showed the highest ESI (from 71.28 ± 5.50 to 91.73 ± 5.56 min), the smallest droplet size (from 2,754 ± 110 to 2,138 ± 182 nm) and the best rheological properties, as demonstrated by the microstructure photographs. Overall, by showing the effect of HC in improving the emulsifying properties of TMP, the study demonstrated HC as a potential technique for meat protein processing
GC Gene Polymorphisms and Vitamin D-Binding Protein Levels Are Related to the Risk of Generalized Aggressive Periodontitis
Objective. To explore whether GC (group-specific component) rs17467825, rs4588, and rs7041 polymorphisms are associated with generalized aggressive periodontitis. Methods. This case-control study recruited 372 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (group AgP) and 133 periodontal healthy subjects (group HP). GC rs17467825, rs4588, and rs7041 genotypes and plasmatic vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) were measured. Analysis of single SNP and multiple SNPs was performed and relevance between plasmatic DBP and haplotypes was analyzed. Results. GC rs17467825 GG genotype was statistically associated with lower risk for generalized aggressive periodontitis under the recessive model (OR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.30–0.92, p=0.028). GC rs17467825 and rs4588 had strong linkage disequilibrium with r2≥0.8 and D′≥0.8. Haplotype (GC rs17467825, rs4588) GC was associated with the less risk for generalized aggressive periodontitis (OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.09–0.96, p=0.043). In group AgP, individuals with combined genotype (GC rs17467825, rs4588) AG+CA had significantly lower plasmatic DBP level than those with the other two combined genotypes (AG+CA versus AA+CC p=0.007; AG+CA versus GG+AA p=0.026). Conclusions. GC rs17467825 genotype GG and haplotype (GC rs17467825, rs4588) GC are associated with generalized aggressive periodontitis. The association may be acquired through regulating DBP levels. The functions of GC gene and DBP in inflammatory disease need to be further studied
Eutrophication Assessment Based on the Cloud Matter Element Model
Eutrophication has become one of the most serious problems threatening the lakes/reservoirs in China over 50 years. Evaluation of eutrophication is a multi-criteria decision-making process with uncertainties. In this study, a cloud matter element (CME) model was developed in order to evaluate eutrophication level objectively and scientifically, which incorporated the randomness and fuzziness of eutrophication evaluation process. The elements belonging to each eutrophication level in the CME model were determined by means of certainty degrees through repeated simulations of cloud model with reasonable parameters of expectation Ex, entropy En, and hyper-entropy He. The weights of evaluation indicators were decided by a combination of entropy technology and analytic hierarchy process method. The neartudes of water samples to each eutrophication level of lakes/reservoirs in the CME model were generated and the eutrophication levels were determined by maximum neartude principal. The proposed CME model was applied to evaluate eutrophication levels of 24 typical lakes/reservoirs in China. The results of the CME model were compared with those of comprehensive index method, matter element model, fuzzy matter element model, and cloud model. Most of the results obtained by the CME model were consistent with the results obtained by other methods, which proved the CME model is an effective tool to evaluate eutrophication
Ligature-induced peri-implant infection in crestal and subcrestal implants: a clinical and radiographic study in dogs
Objective. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of implant–abutment interface (IAI) placement depths on peri-implant tissues in the presence of ligature-induced peri-implant inflammation.Materials and Methods. Two implants with screwed-in IAIs (SI) and two implants with tapped-in IAIs (TI) were inserted in one side of the mandible in six dogs eight weeks after tooth extraction. Four experimental groups were constituted: SI placed crestally, SI placed 1.5 mm subcrestally, TI placed crestally and TI placed 1.5 mm subcrestally. After 12 weeks, the healing abutments were connected. Four weeks later, cotton floss ligatures were placed around the abutments to promote plaque accumulation. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed at 0, 6 and 12 weeks after ligature placement. The effects of the IAI placement depths on clinical and radiographic parameters were assessed.Results. The alterations of peri-implant probing depths, clinical attachment levels, distances from the IAI to the first bone-implant contact (IAI-fBIC) and depths of infrabony defect were significant larger in the subcrestal groups compared with the crestal groups during the plaque accumulation period. The alterations of clinical attachment levels, IAI-fBIC, depth of the infrabony defect and horizontal bone loss were not significantly different between the SI and TI groups after ligature placement.Conclusion. Tissue destruction in subcrestal implants may be more serious than that in crestal implants in the presence of inflamed peri-implant mucosa
