    Kinematics and Collimation of the Two-Sided Jets in NGC 4261: VLBI Study on Sub-parsec Scales

    We report multi-frequency VLBI studies of the sub-parsec scale structure of the two-sided jet in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 4261. Our analyses include new observations using the Source Frequency Phase Referencing technique with the Very Long Baseline Array at 44 and 88 GHz, as well as archival data at 15 and 43 GHz. Our results show an extended double-sided structure at 43/44 GHz and provide a clear image of the nuclear region at 88 GHz, showing a core size of ∼\sim0.09 mas and a brightness temperature of ∼1.3×109\sim1.3\times10^{9} K. Proper motions are measured for the first time in the two-sided jet, with apparent speeds ranging from 0.31±0.14 c0.31\pm0.14\,c to 0.59±0.40 c0.59\pm0.40\,c in the approaching jet and 0.32±0.14 c0.32\pm0.14\,c in the receding jet. The jet-to-counter-jet brightness ratio allows us to constrain the viewing angle to between ∼54∘\sim54^{\circ} and 84∘84^{\circ} and the intrinsic speed to between ∼0.30 c\sim0.30\,c and 0.55 c0.55\,c. We confirm the parabolic shape of the upstream jet on both sides of the central engine, with a power-law index of 0.56±0.070.56\pm0.07. Notably, the jet collimation is found to be already completed at sub-parsec scales, with a transition location of about 0.61 pc, which is significantly smaller than the Bondi radius of 99.2 pc. This behavior can be interpreted as the initial confinement of the jet by external pressure from either the geometrically thick, optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAF) or the disk wind launched from it. Alternatively, the shape transition may also be explained by the internal flow transition from a magnetically dominated to a particle-dominated regime.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 table

    Genome sequence and organization of a nucleopolyhedrovirus that infects the tea looper caterpillar, Ectropis obliqua

    AbstractThe complete nucleotide sequence of Ectropis obliqua nucleopolyhedrovirus (EcobNPV), which infects the tea looper caterpillar, was determined and analyzed. The double stranded circular genome is composed of 131,204 bp and is 37.6% G+C rich. The analysis predicted 126 putative, minimally overlapping open reading frames (ORFs) with 150 or more nucleotides that together compose 89.8% of the genome. The remaining 10.2% constitute non-coding and three homologous regions. Comparison with previously sequenced baculoviruses indicated that three ORFs were unique to EcobNPV, while the remaining 123 ORFs shared identity with other baculovirus genes. In addition to two bro homologues, three other repeat ORFs, including dbp, p26, and odv-e66, were identified. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that each member of the paired ORFs was acquired independently. Gene parity plot analysis and percent identity of gene homologues suggested that EcobNPV is a Group II NPV, although its genomic organization was highly distinct

    Hepatocarcinoma Angiogenesis and DNA Damage Repair Response: An Update

    Hepatocarcinoma is one of the most common lethal human malignant tumors, mainly because of active angiogenesis. This kind of high angiogenesis often accounts for early metastasis, rapid recurrence, and poor survival. Growing evidence has proved that hepatocarcinoma angiogenesis is closely associated with multiple risk factors, such as DNA damages resulting from hepatitis B and C virus infection, aflatoxin B1 exposure, ethanol intake, and obesity. Genetic alterations and genomic instability, probably resulting from low DNA damage repair response (DRR) and the following unrepaired DNA lesions, are also increasingly recognized as important risk factors of hepatocarcinoma angiogenesis. Dysregulation of DRRs and signaling to cell cycle checkpoints involving in DRR pathways may accelerate the accumulation of DNA damages and trigger the dysregulation of angiogenesis-related genes and the progression of hepatocarcinoma. In this review, we discussed DNA damages/DRRs and angiogenesis during hepatocarcinogenesis and their interactive regulations. Hopefully, the review will also remind the medical researchers and clinic doctors of further understanding and validating the values of DNA damages/DRRs in hepatocarcinoma angiogenesis

    Autotoxicity in Pogostemon cablin and their allelochemicals

    AbstractThe effects of allelochemicals and aqueous extracts from different Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth., Lamiaceae, parts and rhizosphere soil on growth parameters, leaf membrane peroxidation and leaf antioxidant enzymes were investigated in patchouli. P. cablin seedlings were incubated in solutions containing allelochemicals and aqueous extracts from different patchouli parts and its rhizosphere soil at several concentrations. Firstly, the growth parameters were significantly reduced by the highest concentration of leaves, roots and stems extracts (p<0.05). As compared to the control, plant height was reduced by 99.8% in the treatment with leaves extracts (1:10). The malondialdehyde content increased greatly when patchouli seedlings were subject to different concentrations of leaves, roots and stems extracts; meanwhile, the superoxide dismutase and peroxidase activities showed an increase trend at the low concentration, followed by a decline phase at the high concentration of roots and leaves extracts (1:10). What's more, leaves and roots extracts had a more negative effect on patchouli growth than stems extracts at the same concentrations. Secondly, the total fresh mass, root length and plant height were greatly reduced by the highest strength of soil extracts. Their decrements were 22.7, 74.9, and 33.1%, respectively. Thirdly, growth parameters and enzymatic activities varied considerably with the kinds of allelochemicals and with the different concentrations. Plant height, root length and total fresh weight of patchouli were greatly reduced by p-hydroxybenzoic acid (200μM), and their decrements were 77.0, 42.0 and 70.0%, respectively. Finally, three useful measures on reducing the autotoxicity during the sustainable patchouli production were proposed

    Generation of phase-only holograms with high-diffraction-order reconstruction by a U-Net-based neural network: A phase grating perspective

    Implicit periodic structure in phase-only holograms will result in many diffraction orders in the diffraction field. We analyzed the diffraction pattern from a phase gratings point of view and proved that the diffraction orders were jointly influenced by the phase factor, the single-beam diffraction factor, and the multibeam interference factor. According to the analysis, we proposed the high-diffraction-order angular spectrum method (HDO-ASM) for the numerical reconstruction of high diffraction orders. Different from the conventional methods of removing high diffraction orders, we chose to reconstruct target images in high diffraction orders with HDO-ASM and a U-Net-based neural network. Finally, the 4 K phase-only holograms with high-diffraction-order reconstruction were generated in 0.09s and had a mean reconstruction quality of 34.3 dB (PSNR) in the DIV2K valid dataset. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrated that there are few speckle noises and fringes in the reconstructed images of holograms generated by the proposed method
